Review: I'll admit that I and my e-mail correspondants have been duped by some of the urban legends contained in this book. However, the book's title is misleading. Most of these stories are campfire stories and jokes that no reasonably intelligent person believes happend to "a friend of a friend."

Those looking for an easy quick read of a mildly entertaing book should order it. Unless you fall into that category, I fear you will, like I did, regret paying for a book such as this when there are so many urban legend websites available with a double-click as the only payment needed.

Summary: Ohmigosh!
Review: My mother recently checked this book out from a library for me, after I became addicted to the horror movie, Urban Legend. I never really believed in any of this stuff, but after reading the whole book, a few stuck with me. Especially the story of Three Men and a Baby and the ghost of a little boy. It inspired me to rent the movie, and I swear, I actually saw it! Many of the stories will shock you, and many will make you laugh. It's a great book!

Summary: soem of it was brilliant
Review: ok, so most of the urban legends were a bit lame but some of them...some of them sparkled.
i won't give any of them away but look out for the burnt corpse which drowned, the dog leading the soon to be distraught wife and the endless killers/ghosts...
great conversation piece.

Summary: An enticing page-turner!
Review: So much has been made of so-called urban legends in the recent past . . . in movies, newsmagazines, as fodder for talk shows. But it wasn't until I picked up this jewel of a book that I felt I could converse like a pro about them! First-rate writing, crackerjack research . . . bravo!

Summary: Enjoyable read
Review: This book is highly entertaining with a fair bit of whimsy. Not as exhausting as many(most?) of the other urban legend books. A very good first foray into ULs.

Summary: I love this book =)
Review: This book was a good read, It has a lot of urban legends, some I have heard before, and some I have not. It is easy to read and the stories are short, about a page each. The thing that I think was the "neatest" was in the back of the book, there are some blank pages to write your own urban legends, which I thought was good, because I have heard some that are not in this book, and some I have heard differently than what this book tells, like the Jersey Devil. Anywhoo!! Easy to read, short, cute stories that leave you wondering if they're based on true stories or not!! =)

Summary: Very Neat!
Review: This is a very good collection of Urban Legends. It doesn't waste time going through lengthly explainations on where these stories originated from, nor does it take the time to debunk them as being untrue--the preface takes care of that. The only thing that struck me as being a little off the subject was the section on paranormal phenomena which I feel is a completely different field altogether that should have not been included in this book.

Summary: Entertaining but very loose definition of "urban legend"
Review: This is an entertaining book (and probably another good bathroom book), though I was occasionally nonplussed at what was considered an urban legend. It of course contains the familiar stories: alligators in New York sewers, people waking up in their hotel rooms sans kidneys, the poodle in the microwave, etc. Other stories included are actually true: the guy who attaches balloons to his lawn chair (there are news articles online about this), the person who trains pigeons to congregate in response to a referee's whistle. (The latter I heard from an MIT student whom I have no reason to distrust.)

Still others partake more of the horror-story-around-a-campfire than the usual urban legend, i.e., there seems to be no real reason to believe the story.

But it's entertaining (and easy) reading nonetheless--a lot of fun.
