Rating: Summary: The perfect guide for any movie buff! Review: At first glance, this is a book you think you might want to pass up, but it's the perfect guide! These four girls have very different tastes, but each of them have a lot to offer. With little side-bars, and essays, this book is as fun as they come! They have made some very good recommendations for me. If it weren't for these four, I wouldn't be able to expand my horizons. But they're the type who make you open your mind. I mean, I hadn't even heard of 'Gas, Food, Lodging' before this book and let me tell you, it's a good movie! So get this book and see what these girls have to say. You might find a gem of a movie that you enjoy just as much as they say you will.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic. Buy this book! Review: At last, at last.... movie reviews that are smart AND unpretentious. My favorite thing about this book is the way that the girls respectfully, no gleefully, disagree with each other. When I got to the chapter about horror movies, I felt an old familiar sense of embarrassment as Andrea described the thrill of renting all the goriest movies available with her girlfriends in junior high. I am a big fat chicken when it comes to scary movies. Just can't handle them. And then, voila, I turn the page, and there is Sibyl's essay "I Am a Big Wuss" confessing to just the same! What fun.
Rating: Summary: Picture yourself dishing movies with your closest friends Review: Finally, a movie guide that doesn't pretend to have the market on capital-T TRUTH. The girls are never preachy or patronizing; they take film criticism for what it is-- one schmo's opinion, colored by all sorts of subjective baggage like who you saw the movie with, whether or not the star reminds you of your first babysitter, or how many times the yutz in the front row talked on his cell phone. From Dre's closet admiration of the tres cheesy "The Cutting Edge" to Sibyl's sheepish delight in the buffoonish Jeff Goldblum ouevre, this smart book is accessible, honest, and hilarious. The girls always speak their minds, even when it means Lise and Clare disclosing that "Forest Gump" drove them to drink. Picture yourself dishing movies with your three closest friends-- friends who all happen to be incredibly witty, genuine and hip. Buy this book!
Rating: Summary: Funny, Witty, Informative Review: I first became familiar with the Girls on Film through their Website. Amazingly, I almost always agree with their movie critiques. That's why I knew I wouldn't be disappointed with this guide. It's more of the same conversational tone and is filled with a lot of movies I know, but also a fair ammount I haven't seen (yet). I'm looking forward to making my way to the video store. The Girls are friends who make you feel welcome- a great movie guide with multiple gen-x style blurbs which are very amusing!
Rating: Summary: Hilarious & Informative - a winning combination! Review: I sat down to read a couple of pages of this book and ended up reading the entire thing! Not only did I find the movie suggestions and reviews on target and helpful in battling the video rental ennui, I found myself laughing out loud! At then end of the book, I felt like I knew the "girls" myself! I bought several copies of this book for gifts ranging from a Father's Day gift to a graduation present for my 12 year old cousin! Buy this book for yourself and for anyone who likes movies.
Rating: Summary: I am a fan Review: I think this book is a lot of fun. My roommate reads the Girls On Film on their web site and bought their book last week. We've been leafing through it and it's good and I found a lot of the movies I like in it. I'd suggest it for anyone a bit on the hipper side.
Rating: Summary: Better than most.... Review: I wished it could have been more in depth, but overall I have very much liked this book and think the authors have good taste in movies.
Rating: Summary: Funny! Review: My husband & I heard one of the authors on NPR and went and got this great book. It's very funny and a great read, and I would highly reccomend it!
Rating: Summary: it rocks Review: These guys have the greatest sense of humor and they are so astonishingly unpretentious... Generally, I find video guides a bit dreary, but this book reminds of the Silver Palate Cookbook in that you can use it as a guide or just read it. It's very funny and it brings back many memories of some of my favorite films.
Rating: Summary: It's a party in your hands Review: This book is like having four friends - sometimes maddeningly opinionated friends - over for a drink. They know what they like and they're not afraid to tell you. Yes, you may disagree with them from time to time, but isn't that what friends are for? The book re-opened my eyes to movies I haven't thought about in years, reminded me of films I should see again, inspired me to take chances on ones I never got around to seeing. But the best part about this book is that it's fun - from the great artwork to the little blurbs in the margins, it's the perfect book to pick up for a two-minute distraction or a thirty-minute immersion. Two thumbs... oh nevermind. Buy this book!
