Summary: "Dazzling" -- Publishers Weekly
Review:

"It has been said that no one ever died from laughter, but what a ring of truth there is in my saying to you, in the tone and spirit of one sister to another: girl, you gonna die laughing when you read Honey, Hush!" -- Johnetta B. Cole

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
"Honey, Hush!" is an exclamation used among black women, especially those from the South, as a friendly encouragement, a mild suggestion of playful disbelief, or a hint that one is telling truths which are prohibited. This book will make you say "Honey, Hush!" many a time. If indeed humor is "God's aspirin to soothe the headache of reality," as the folk tell us, then this book is just the prescription the doctor ordered to provide some righteous therapy.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

"Dance's cogent introductory commentary provides social and historical context for more than 200 years' worth of material, and her skillful thematic arrangement of these pieces -- e.g., "Nice Girls Don't", "My Sweet Papa," "Just Like a White Man" -- makes the volume convenient for those who want to browse and those who opt to read straight through." -- Publishers Weekly

"In an extraordinary display of literary research, Daryl Dance has assembled a treasure trove of black womanist humor that attests to our transcendent power to overcome and to survive." -- Paule Marshall

"This troublesome, heartening gumbo (not quite a rich and strange enough word, but close) of plain home truths, attitude, painful ironies, barbaric yawps, sweetness, wiles, and mysterious subtleties seems sudden (in print, anyway) yet oh-lord-how-long overdue. It greatly expands the notion, or nation, of American humor." -- Roy Blount, Jr.

"Honey, Hush! is a house party, a pat on the back, a celebration, a revelation of epic proportions. This collection overflows with wisdom, sassiness, brashness and searing truth. Find a comfortable chair, kick off your shoes, and get ready to be transformed. Warning: read this book and you will never be the same." -- Marita Golden

Summary: It is so funny and down to earth.
Review: I really enjoyed each entry. Dr. Dance did a wonderful job at pulling of the pieces together. The poetry, the short stories, and the excerpts from different authors. I have given it twice as a gift and each time the individuals have thoroughly enjoyed the reading.

Summary: Hilarious reading for African American Women and AfrAm. Men!
Review: This book has been the "Hit" of several recent book parties in The San Francisco East Bay and South Bay Areas. Dr. Dance's book evokes memories of Black humor we rarely are exposed to anymore. These anthologies are the best I have read in years. We can still laugh at ourselves and love the humor in the antidotes.

Summary: I wish ... had six stars
Review: This books is off the charts! Ive been reading for a long time, and this book just encompasses so much for the African American experience. My favorite parts of each chapter are the anecdotes and sayings found at the end of each respectively. Purchase this book and pass it on other everyone you know who needs a laugh!

Summary: Hilarious, and true.
Review: This is an enormously funny, if often slightly risque, anthology. I took it to the office, and my African American fellow workers can't put it down. Ever since I brought it in, periodically there are howls of laughter from around the building. And several of them have told me that they have heard some of these stories and sayings from their own relatives and friends. Highly recommended!
