Rating: Summary: A not to be missed work! Review: I had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Olmos talk in person about the making of "Americanos" and now have the pleasure of enjoying the book again and again. The photos are hauntingly charming, poignant and vital and I can guarantee they will stay in your heart and mind long after you put the book down. What "Americanos" has to say about Latinos is so vitally important. Olmos, in his preface, says "...Too often, only one culture of Latino culture is apparent. That is the culture that we see from our car windows, on newscasts, in restaurants and from stadium seats..." "Americanos", however gives us an insider's view, a look into the very heart and soul of our Latino brothers and sisters and reveals a people, in Olmos's words, "...who are diverse in culture, color, ideas and dreams..."
Rating: Summary: The birth of "Americanos" Latino Life In The United States Review: Undoubtedly the most complete and successful Latino production ever, "Americanos's" birth is a truly humble story. I began this project back in 1995 when I found three negative story/photo articles depicting Latino life in America. As a photojournalist and proud Latino of Nicaraguan descent raised in Washington ,DC, the need to respond to these grim portrayals of my people and culture was killing me. Upon stumbling to Author David Cohen's photobook "The African Americans" I realized that a Latino version of this magnificent artbook and story had not been published. I contacted the author and shared with him my feelings and pride of being a Latino in America, and that the stories of my people and the treasures we award this nation with on a daily basis were going unrecognized. He gave me what are probrably the most wonderful gifts you can give another human being, his knowledge, wisdom, and time. With his counsel, I began contacting photographers nationwide and proceeded to invite them to walk with me on this journey. As I look back, images of my then six year old daughter stuffing hundreds of envelopes containing letters of proposals to photographers, writers, publishers and corporate America come to mind. In 1996 I invited actor and community activist Edward James Olmos to join me in this landmark production. I shared with him my desire to help further the understanding of my people to those of non-Latino descent and contribute in erasing the many negative misconceptions and myths many have of our race,a job he has executed too well for our community. This book, HBO film and traveling Smithsonian Institute exhibition serve not only to educate others about Latinos in this country, but also helps us, the Latino community grow in understanding, knowledge and unity with each other. I not only did this project so that my children could walk always in full knowledge of their culture and feel proud of their begginings, I did this so that your children also, can feel proud of my people and appreciate the many faces and rich colors we bring to this blessed nation. Enjoy "Americanos" and I invite you to encourage and allow your children to "Dare to Dream". My reward for daring to dream is "Americanos". Thank You and God Bless!
Rating: Summary: Amazing photography by the best Latino photographers. Review: Without a book such as Americanos to showcase the great contribution that Latino photographers have and will continue to make, the world may never have a chance to enjoy such stimulating and insightfull photography. A must have for every photographer!
