Summary: I loved the behind the scenes stories and the on-ice banter!
Review: As a hockey offical myself, I loved the stories from the officials. Learning both how it was done in the old days and some of the techniques and stories of the guys that are currently working. Every official has and gives advice or what he feels the key to working well and continuing to work well at a high level. I took carefull notes.It gives the fans a different perspective of these guys. It sheds a different light. Not always the bad guy and it tells how officials prize the chance to work in the playoffs just as much as the players do. If not sometimes more. I really liked it. I could relate. It is a must read for any young (at heart) aspiring hockey offical. G.L. Winnipeg, MB.

Summary: A MUST FOR REFEREES, A GREATER MUST FOR PLAYERS
Review: Being a referee myself, I have recommended it to every other ref I know. Hearing from the guys who really go through it all you just have to appreciate your job even more. For players - you guys need to read it to see what it feels like to be a ref. You will no longer yell at us the way you do. Overall, the book is a amazing and a must for hockey lovers everywhere!!!!

Summary: So-so Insight into NHL Referees
Review: By his own admission, Mr. Irvin placed a microphone on the table, recorded their comments and, basically, transcribed word-for-word what NHL referees, past and present, had to say about the game. While by no means does repeating subject comments, practically, verbatim to text represent a weak effort, in Mr. Irvin's case one would have expected more. Considering he has direct lineage of one of hockeys most storied coaches, has seen practically every Montreal Canadiens game in the past 40 or 50 years, has written dozens of hockey books and provided countless analysis on HNIC this book represents a let down. Given the lack of 'off-ice observer' insight one would expect from someone who practically grew up in the Forum, we are then left with large-scale referee reminiscing, much of it repetitive (entry into the profession, forced early retirement, mentors), however with little depth and not much to re-new our appreciation for the men in stripes.

Summary: I SAT DOWN AND READED THIS BOOK IN TWO NIGHTS.
Review: I NEW I WOULD LOVE THIS BOOK AND I WAS RIGHT. INSIDE STORIES ARE THE BEST, AND THIS WAS AN INSIDER BOOK. AFTER I WAS DONE I GOT OUT MY VIDO TAPE OF GAME THREE OF THE LAST WORLD CUP GAME BETWEEN CANADA AND THE USA AND THIS TIME I WATCHED THE OFFICIALS THE WHOLE GAME. IT WAS GREAT TO HEAR THE OTHER SIDE OF THE "YOU FAT PIG WHY DON'T YOU EAT OTHER DOUGHNUT" STORY. I WATCHED THAT GAME ON TV YEARS AGO AND TO READ ABOUT HOW WAS A TREAT. ALL I CAN ADD IS THAT I'M GETTING DICK IRVINS OTHER BOOKS.

I never realized (funny as it sounds) that refs are people, and feel as awful as the fans might after a badly called game. The anecdotes are funny, the insights enlightning. Now I think twice before critizing the ref. Who knew!

Shortly after reading this book, I met Paul Stewart and two other officials (not in the book).They are amazing people who need to get the same "glory" as the players. They have the tougher job. If you are a true hockey fan and appreciate the finer parts of the game..you must read this book.
