Summary: Space Melodies
Review: Since Star Trek's debut on television in 1966, music has been an important component of the entire space saga. The Music Of Star Trek, by film and TV score historian Jeff Bond, examines both the highs and lows of Trek's musical journey.

The book breaks down by series or feature film. From Alexander Courage's original series theme, through Star Trek Voyager, and the ninth film Insurection, it's all here. There is both the technical and critical aspects of scoring Star Trek in the 250 page book. The best parts of the book though are the interviews with the composers behind the themes. I paticularly enjoyed the no holds barred interview with Ron Jones, a former TNG composer, who had more than one clash with producers after creator Gene Roddenberry passed away over his efforts. As Spock might say, "Facinating" Jerry Goldsmith, who has contributed more music to Trek than any other, is also interviewed too, as are others. Cue sheets for episodes and films are also in the book. Classic series film director/writer Nick Meyer (Star Trek's II, IV, and VI) provides a short, sweet, well written introduction.

The book was published in '98---I would welcome an updated edition. Only those interested in film/television scores need to "apply within"

Summary: A TREAT FOR FILM MUSIC NUTS
Review: The first sentence of this treat for film music nuts, as well as Trekkers, asserts that more music has been produced for Star Trek than any other series of films. Bond discusses the scores for the original TV series and all the movies. Pertinent interviews with the composers conclude most chapters....A fascinating interview with Star Trek: Voyager music editor Garry Sackman and a very helpfully annotated discography of ST music wrap things up splendidly.

Summary: THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF STAR TREK
Review: The Music of Star Trek is a critical and historical overview of music scored for Paramount's Star Trek franchise, from the original '60s series to the highly successful Star Trek movies and the new television shows Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager. This comprises some of the finest and most memorable music ever written for television or film, and has become a part of our American cultural heritage.

The book features in-depth discussion of the original '60s TV scores and interviews with composers who worked on the show such as Fred Steiner, Alexander Courage, and Gerald Fried, plus a talk with producer Robert Justman about his role in sheperding the classic show's music.

Individual chapters address each of the Star Trek motion picture scores, with cue breakdowns and interviews with film composers Dennis McCarthy, Cliff Eidelman and Acamedy Award winning composers Jerry Goldsmith and Leonard Rosenman. Finally, the music of the more recent Star Trek series is showcased, with interviews with all of the current series composers, including Dennis McCarthy, Jay Chattaway, Paul Ballourgion, David Bell and Don Davis. Supplemental material includes original composer sketches, cue sheets, and sheet music samples.

Jeff Bond is Managing Editor of Film Score Monthly magazine and Executive Editor of Eon Magazine, an online science fiction media magazine. He has written for Sci Fi Universe magazine and contributed over one hundred reviews to The Videohound's Guide to Soundtracks.

Summary: Excellent
Review: Very through coverage of each series and the movies. I found it fascinating how much music existed for the movies that was left off the soundtrack releases. If you enjoy the soundtrack music for the Str Trek shows/films at all, you will enjoy this in-depth look at the creation of the music and the minds behind it.
