I read the book and thought it had a lot of good information in it that could really help, but I think if the book was not poorly written it would be a lot more enjoyable. I only read the book becuase it was a required text. If it was not a required text, I would of set the book down after the first couple of pages. I think the information in this book gives it the potential to be a very good book and could one day be very helpful, but it needs to be completely rewritten.

The chapters are disjointed, with no true unifying theme. The prose is stilted, though I suspect alot of this is due to poor translation. The information itself is good, but badly presented; overall a boring mess of a book. Pick up Tannahill's "Food in History" instead.

I am a culinary arts student. I found this text to be very informative. The information given in this book was interesting to learn about, though it was not presented in the most ideal way. I had trouble keeping interest in the book. Some parts were easy to read while others seemed to drag on and on. Had this book been presented in a more story like fashion it would have been easier to read leisurely. As far as using this text in a classroom, it is a very resourceful tool. I found that the information helped me better understand how the history of culinary influences our culinary practices today.

This book explains this most important part of our evolution. This is a great reference for those who wish to know more about man's food habits at any moment of its history. Beautifully researched, and easy to read, this book offers details useful for all to know.

This book contained a wealth of information. It outlined the different peoples around the world and their eating habits, indigenous foods, and many other interesting facts about their history. The problem is, the this book is just not an easy read. It is dry and frankly downright boring. The could be attributed to a lazy student, but unfortunately if a book doesn't lend itself well to reading, then most students won't read it. Besides, in this particular class the subject matter of the book have very little to do with the class itself. Personally, I think there is a better choice of supplemental material out there.

It is a must read for any person that want to learn where the food came from and how it got there. The only bad thing, is the book was kind of hard to understand at some part. Overall is a great book.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Excellent overview of eating habits of Europe Review: This book is an excellent scholarly look at the eating habits of civilizations of the past leading up to modern Europe. This book covers the history of food from a civilization standpoint, rather than covering it on a food item by item basis. For example, it covers what a people such as the Romans ate and how it was prepared and gathered, rather than tell you everything about the history of asparagus or some other food. If there were anything I would say against this book, it would be that I would like it to have covered the history of food on continents other than Europe. Though, the book made no claims to cover anything but Europe.
