Summary: King Dave Speaks His Widoms & Wit
Review: Ok, so what do we expect from DLR in a tome on his life and history with Van Halen. Well, for starters one can expect his view on the whole thing in general. Given the developments we all witnessed on that MTV appearance (travesty) years ago and the subsequent lack of an original VH reunion tour and the eventual dropping of VH from the record label - one can only determine that Dave speaks the truth.

The book is a quick and entertaining read for fans of Dave and VH or just plain music entertainment.

Summary: Just Dave
Review: Sitting in the kitchen, listening to Dave, in the old pre VH days, he sounds just the same. If anyone wants to know how it feels to know a star, find a friend who can rap like this, and has a lot to actually say, and you will know. I appreciated the reviews and the fact that Dave showed that he actually does have class and did not enter the fray of gossip and back biting. I liked all the guys, we had a lot of fun, whether stapling fliers to telephone poles, or pushing through the crowds. When I had my stroke, and was told I would die, Dave sent me an inspiration, a long limo, and an invite to the US Festival-backstage. I was too ill to go, but the limo was mine for the day, and it was one of (as Dr. Phil says) my "pivotal" days. Not only one of the hottest names in Rock at the time, but also a Cosmo Bachelor of the Month. What could I possibly feel sorry for myself about. Thank you Dave for helping me remember to laugh, and to get the biggest limo. Thanks for the book, I finally got to hear about the Amazon trip.:)

Summary: Messy
Review: Sometimes good, sometimes great but overall this book is VERY laid back and sort of half baked. Roth writes with a Zen persona - so some stories dont really head anywhere and some anecdotes fade out before they should.

Some of the time it works and certain chapters are funny, informative, and entertaining. Other times the Zen man doesn't deliver the goods.

Overall the book is a must read for fans of classic Van Halen and DLR because there really is nothing else out there. Unfortunately, there is very little insight to the Van Halen machine at he height of their success.

Summary: History will smile knidly upon Mr. Roth
Review: The spirit of the times influence many to deride David Lee Roth as a washed-up has-been who lent little to the world's cultural landscape other than several early 80's hard rock recordings and a frivolous (albeit colourful) public persona. Many people disparage his music as disposable and dated-sounding, and in truth, much of it's thus. However it is my opinion that history will smile kindly upon Mr. Roth and his artistic accomplishments. David stood (and still stands) for much more than just the music that he created, just as Andy Warhol, David Bowie, and Madonna (obviously I could go on,) stood for more than the works that they've created... Artistically David missed the mark nearly as often as he hit it, however in life, Roth stands like a colossus. He lived (and to my knowledge continues to live) a life dictated solely by his own self-interests. In this way he personifies the philosophy espoused by the Marquis de Sade.
Collectively at this time we do not recognise David Lee Roth's importance in the grand cultural scheme, however, one day I would not feel the least surprised if Crazy From the Heat graced university reading lists. (You'll recall that van Gogh sold only one painting during his lifetime--the same principle applies to Roth's meagre book sales--someday people will take notice of this brilliant work.) It became apparent to me throughout the course of reading this work that David Lee Roth does not care so much about creating brilliant music as he does capturing a particular spirit--in his music, persona, writing, etc. That spirit bespeaks a joyous sarcasm and love of life that emanates from an unflinching personal philosophy. That spirit is David Lee Roth's "art."
Davis's "autobiography" contains equal amounts of ribald humour, cultural observation, and philosophy. He never panders to his audience nor deviates from his artistic intention; in this way Roth writes in the style of Henry Miller.
Crazy From The Heat--moreso than much of his recorded material-- exposes David's brilliantly creative mind. He is a genius in the style of a Cocteau, Miller, or Sade.
His story is an incredible read, although those of you who desire a tell-all of his times with Van Halen, backstage antics, etc. will feel ripped-off. Crazy from the Heat is literature--not to be confused with other such rock star writings.

Summary: The Parable According to Dave...
Review: Think back to the last time you and a good friend decided to get drunk together at home. It is now very late, you are both drunk and quite happy to let your friend talk away because you simply don't have the energy to make conversation yourself. Your friend is telling you all sorts of things he probably wouldn't have done if he was sober. Eventually, he falls asleep and you tiptoe out of the room, leaving him to it, content within yourself that you at least listened.....

That is what reading DLR's book is like. Regardless of whether or not you are (or were) a Van Halen fan, this book is for anyone keen to learn more about the man most male 30-somethings today aspired to be. DLR doesn't try to be the funny man in the way he was portrayed by countless music magazines in the 1980's. He talks openly and honestly about who he is, what makes him tick and how he became the legend he is today. He makes a particularly interesting point within this self-penned autobiography. He says he is as well known as the "guy on the dollar bill." He is right. Don't read this book with a view to discovering previously untold stories about Van Halen. Read it with a view to discovering a side to rock's greatest frontman you probably never new existed.

Summary: Best read while tanning on a beach somewhere.
Review: What can I say? Within ten pages of reading this book I cursed myself for wasting my life. DLR has sailed the Amazon, climbed the Himalayas, slept with hordes of women, rode his bike on every continent, mastered several forms of martial arts and rocked tens of thousands of people at a time...he's lived more lives than most of us can dream. What is also great is that he reveals himself to be a highly intelligent individual with a positive zest for life that is ultimately more uplifting than ANY self-help book on the market. Whenever I'm down, I pull this book out and start to randomly read from any point and reconfirm my love of life. Even when the guy's facts are wrong, his amusing ramblings never once become boring. You can't fault a guy for having a personal philosophy and sticking to it. His self-confidence almost crosses into arrogance, but it's evident that the guy is willing to play the fool...and only because it's more fun! He was once asked in an interview why such an obviously intelligent guy has to sink to the lowest common denominator and he answered "Hey, I can go on and pontificate about Voltaire, but why bore anyone? They can go and do that on their own. I'm here to entertain. Life's a party that we've all been invited to and I'm your host." At least he doesn't suffer from delusions of grandeur. The best sections of the book, however, are when Roth talks about what drives him...his liberal Jewish upbringing, his early epiphany after having to wear braces on his legs in early childhood that he was an outsider, his need to explore and read everything he can get his hands on, the ups and downs with the boys in Van Halen. Supposedly this book was whittled down from a 1200 page manuscript...I would die to get my hands on that! An all-out, vigourously entertaining and uproaringly funny read! Keep this in your bathroom for your houseguests. They'll sit in there for an hour. Guaranteed.
