Rating: Summary: Stickels' Are You as Smart as You Think Review: Stickels and Gardner are among the top popularizers of mathematics and science (see my and other readers' book reviews of Gardner's books, including his early 1980 books). This takes the highest type of Creative Genius, because translating from quantitative to qualitative or verbal language requires mastery of both and of the underlying concepts, and developing puzzles and problems for the public requires inventiveness and creativity beyond translating. Here I want to emphasize that Stickels' and Gardner's methods can lead to enormous improvement in student learning of mathematics and science and even in research in these fields, especially in topics that have not yet been analyzed. For example, my work in Logic-Based Probability (LBP) asks the simple question: what happens if you replace division by subtraction and add 1 in all equations of probability and statistics? The answer is that you get LBP, which is very important for analyzing very rare events and the influences of events. If it gets this simple, we could have a whole nation of inventors trying out different operations and different changes in assumptions. Einstein's general relativity came about largely because some mathematicians asked: what happens if things that look parallel (like tracks running in the same direction) eventually come together? This created Non-Euclidean Geometry.

Rating: Summary: Simply the Best Review: Terry Stickels is THE reason that I became a puzzle/brain teaser enthusiast years ago. I have run my own e-puzzle business since 1997, and much of the material I've written has been inspired by Terry's writings. This book is simply his best (so far). I must warn you that after trying some of the problems, you may not only have trouble putting the book down, but may in fact find that you have a new addiction... enjoy!

Rating: Summary: Excellent puzzle book Review: To answer the title question, I must say yes because I looked at the first couple of pages and knew I was in over my head. I pondered the puzzle of how to review a book filled with mathematical, logical, and spatial-visual puzzles when I struggled with the first few warm-ups. I could claim my 50 rule, but was that fair and besides I do not believe I could attain that number in the next millennium. Puzzle solved when I turned to Mikey (my spouse), turned on my charm, and said to my numerically brilliant husband (he understands matrix algebra - a matrix to me is a movie): "please leisurely (like in a few hours) look at Mr. Stickels' book and tell me what you think". Mikey loves it. He enjoyed most of the puzzles, which he tells me varies in types and difficulty. He swears that one need not be Einstein, but be patient to attain immense pleasure from these entertaining and interesting puzzles that Mr. Stickels' book contains. Now if Mikey was always so easy to please except he is pressuring me to credit him for this review that I wrote. So be it. "Mr." Harriet Klausner
