Rating: Summary: Fantastic, empowering and thoroughly enjoyable Review: I read the book in less than a day and felt uplifted and empowered. Yes, she does swear. Yes she is angry and confrontational. But sometimes we all need a bit of that to make the most of our lives and even just get through the day. Camryn addresses the issue of fat acceptance and fat celebration with humour and grace. I would recommend this book to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: I would just like to share my thoughts on this book. I love it. I have read it cover to cover 5 times since I bought it in June 1999. I would recommend this book to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Big, smart, and sexy...just like Camryn Review: This is a book for all the fat girls...and all the girls who have ever felt fat, which, I'm afraid, includes almost all of us. Manheim's book is far from a victim's cry. Instead, she embraces who she is, and invites you to, too. Most of us are trapped in some kind of prison of belief, whether it's "I'm too fat" or "I'm too old," or "I'm too short..." and Manheim knows it. The book is also a painfully astute analysis of the actor's job. Manheim's recounting of her various auditions, and the unlikely triumph of her one-woman show, will intrigue people of all sizes. Her empathy with her loving, if frustrating, family, will touch those who wonder if our parents are ever going to "get us." But the bottom line is: it's funny and it's inspiring. Wake up, buy this book!
Rating: Summary: This is the best book I have read in along time! Review: Miss Manheim did a superb job at getting her feelings across to us readers, she has her readers feeling what she felt if not from our own personal experience then from hers. I have allways admired her work but now I have a higher regard for her.
Rating: Summary: Camryn should be my best friend!!! Review: This book is funny and promotes self-acceptance in a BIG way! I absolutely loved reading about Camryn Manheim's life, trials, tribulations and accomplishments. She's witty, sassy, fun-loving, rides a motorcycle and drives a convertible -- and should be my best friend! No matter who you are, you should love this book for the humorous moments of her everyday life. If you're one of the "sisters," you'll love it even more. Read it - what do you have to lose?
Rating: Summary: Nothing of note Review: Though Camryn's comments about how society treats the overweight are on target, there is little originality here, and the humour is as stale as vaudeville.
Rating: Summary: fantastic read for any size Review: This is a sometimes painful, always funny and insightful look into the psyche of a strong woman. A definate read for anyone interested in the mind of a fat girl.
Rating: Summary: Says Everything I Wish I Had Nerve to Say! Review: Camryn has nailed it. I read this book in less than a day, and refuse to lend it to anyone for fear it won't be returned.. Camryn not only captures some of life's most painful moments for us "women of substance"; she also thumbs her nose and flips the bird at those moments with self-esteem and aplomb, and brings the fight for size acceptance to the forefront. Hopefully, this book will be read by people who need to learn some hard lessons about accepting people as they are.
Rating: Summary: This book has touched a nerve for a reason Review: Looking over the reviews previously posted, it's clear that almost everyone who has read this book loved it. I would be willing to wager that the few rude individuals who have posted poor reviews only did so in order to say nasty things about fat people. Very mature.Anyways, I just have to add my voice to those praising this wonderful book. Reading "Wake Up, I'm Fat!" is like having a heart-to-heart talk with your best girlfriend - the one who knows everything about you and has been there herself. Camryn writes in a very conversational, natural manner that is warm, funny, sarcastic, insightful, and empowering. This book isn't JUST for the fat girls. It's for everyone. If you happen to be a fat girl, you'll feel a lot better about yourself after reading it. If you're not, you will still enjoy yourself immensely.
Rating: Summary: A must read! Review: For Wake Up, I'm Fat! Camryn Manheim dons a swimsuit, high heels, diamonds, and a tiara, for heaven's sake. In our "thin is in" society, she must be crazy to display her body in such a public way. What I found when I read the book is not so much that Manheim celebrates her size as thumbs her nose at those who feel her size is inappropriate. Thin as a child, Manheim and her family moved from Peoria to Southern California, where she immediately began to pack on the pounds. A rebel and an activist, Manheim chronicles her journey from very unhappy fat teenager to a self-loving adult who is truly comfortable in her own skin. She describes her experiences in acting school and the incredible sequence of events that helped her land her Emmy winning part on The Practice. She pays special attention to the discrimination she's felt as she has struggled for over two decades with her weight. She details her life-threatening addiction to speed, which she used in an effort to lose weight, and she recounts some hilarious conversations she's had with her fat over the years. Wake Up, I'm Fat! is a quick read, and a thoroughly enjoyable one. However, its language is just a bit salty for my taste (Manheim claims that the "f" word is her favorite, and I'm inclined to believe her). I'd recommend this book for anyone who has a hangup, and I think that's about everyone. You don't have to be heavy to appreciate this book. Manheim makes the interesting point that no one is ever really happy with their bodies; even the skinny girls yearn for different bodies - ones with bigger breasts or flatter tummies or skin that's more tan. And who among us has not felt too tall or too short, too old or too young, too gay or too straight, too black or too white, ad infinitum? There are times where everyone feels she just might not fit, and this book is for anyone who has ever felt that way.
