Rating: Summary: Don't judge this book by it's title. Review: This is a wonderful book. I thought it was going to be an in-your-face type of book, filled with anger and warrior-mentality. But it's not! Camryn shares experiences that will lighten your heart. The "Wake Up, I'm Fat!" has so much more meaning to it than I would have thought. It's about strength, struggles, pain, joy & humor. If you've ever struggled with your self-image, you will love this book. She's so real, and funny, and honest.
Rating: Summary: This book isn't just for all the fat girls! Review: I'm going to keep this review as short as I can as there are 95 others on amazon.com that predate it! Camryn Manheim has written a book that made me laugh and cry, because of its liberating truth and heart. I speak as a fat gay man who went from skinny to fat between second and third grades. There isn't a thing Ms. Manheim has written in this book that I can't identify with and its ultimate message -- that fat people should stop being down on themselves -- is my message, too. I wish I'd been able to write a book like this! I couldn't be happier to have discovered that Camryn Manheim has done it and done it well! I heartily recommend this book to fat people everywhere -- its truth sets us free -- and I also recommend it to people who aren't fat -- whether sympathetic to fat people or not. At the very least it'll give you something to think about.
Rating: Summary: Be yourself but don't let your weight determine how Review: Formally fat, and now fit for over 15 years, I resent how Manheim makes fun of the 'fat' world. Its nothing to proud of: when your weight is out of control its not a laughing matter. I agree with being yourself and total, complete self-acceptance and for THAT I commend her. I also commend her for standing up for what she believes in and believing in herself so much that she didn't let her weight decide her success as an actor or author. I just resent the way she refers to the FAT population. To me, fat means lazy but it also means unfocused and uncaring of a person's person. I can take or leave Manheim but I have to agree with her on one thing: be yourself, and you can never go wrong. That's my dogma and how I live REGARDLESS OF MY SIZE.
Rating: Summary: She's no Hemingway, but she is funny Review: Camryn Manhein tells of her struggle to enter the limelight. Although she attempts to express her comfort with her size, she reminds you just how uncomfortable she really is. The trials and tribulations of a woman who changed her name(it was Debbie), questioned her sexualtiy, and wondered if she could break through in television. Now, Camryn is "pregnant" Eleanor Frutt of the practice....But you'll notice they haven't showed her pregnant body in it's illustrious glory...not yet! Come on Eleanor...give 'em heck!! :0) As a BBW I am rooting for Camryn/Debbie...You will too!
Rating: Summary: Let's hear it for the fat girl! Review: You have to hand it to Camryn; she makes no apology for who or what she is, and I find that refreshing. Her life reads fast and furious. She's direct, outspoken and funny as hell. In a milieu where whiny star bios are the norm, hers is a great read. If you prefer your women skinny and seen, but not heard, forget it; you'll hate this book. I loved it.
Rating: Summary: Ain't Camryn a cutie patootie.... Review: i have been in love with camryn ever since the movie " the road to wellville," and i think she is the perfect woman...so, i was fortunate to pick a copy of this book at a used bookstore in the richmond district some time ago to discover this remarkable woman's story... you don't have to be a big woman to relate to camryn's plight...just trying being a big guy; just try having people treat you different because you are big...try not to let the constant rejection from women get to you: women who think you are neat as a "friend," but would rather date good looking a**holes, just because they were too embarassed to let their friends see them with a fat guy...like camryn, i grew up in a family with parents who constantly pestered me about my size, trying to get me to become smaller, because it was more "socially acceptable"...such insecurities and rejection from the outside eventually drove me into therapy. in the end i learned, that i was fine just the way i am, and that i didn't need the affirmation of others...camryn wails, whispers, and laughs throughout this wonderful and poignant story about herself and how she came to be the goddess that she is... i wish i could've taken camryn to the senior prom;i would've been the envy of all those carrot chomping freaks and all the pretty boys who think they're all that...Camryn is all that and a bag of chips...
Rating: Summary: Thanks Camyrn:) Review: Thanks so much for writing this book---and for giving this little texan plumper a new outlook on her body. God bless!

Rating: Summary: Will appeal to everyone - large or small! Review: Before ever seeing The Practice, I wasn't at all familiar with the name Camryn Manheim. But then the show became successful and Camryn won the Emmy and who could ever forget her acceptance speech when she said. "This is for all the fat people." And now Camryn in her book, Wake Up, I'm Fat, provides her viewing public with a memoir of sorts about her life not only what its like to be fat but to be a fat actress. Camry begins her story when her parents moved the family to to Long Beach, Ca where everybody had skinny figures to her days in high school as a band groupie to her working at Renaiisance Fairs where large women were in style. Then onto college years and her time at NYU studying drama, her days as a signer for the deaf and then her initial roles on Broadway and in the movies. And all the while Camryn talks about her other life as a woman desperately trying to lose weight, her love life, the underground movement which applauds fat people and finally her acceptance of herself and her advocacy on the part of fat people. Manheim describes her plight, shared by so many others, so well that you just can't help but cry and cheer for her when she finally accpets herself and begins to enjoy life as a large woman. The book is also filled with fun industry gossip- her admiration for David Kelly and Kathy Bates and how she even once picked up the Marlboro man. For anybody who has ever struggled with being too large, this book is a wonderful antidote.
