Rating: Summary: Essential Tab Book Review: First, I can vouch for the accuracy of the tablature as stated by the reviewer below. Second, I'm a young guitarist in my twenties who plays in a 60's sounding garage rock band that's influenced by early Kinks, Sonics, Stones, and The Beach Boys music. Chuck Berry's music is an indispensable gateway to opening up the fret board and will really help you understand the dynamics of Rock & Roll music. There's songs in here that would greatly benefit a beginner, and songs that will either challenge or give satisfaction to more advanced guitarists. If given propper study you shouldn't have any problem playing the 12 bar blues structure, and hopefully figuring out your own soloing methods for rock and roll music. Buy this book, it's cheaper than guitar lessons and could help your playing move up to the next level.
Rating: Summary: A disappointment... Review: I am a huge Chuck Berry fan, but I would have to say that I was very disappointed with this book. As such a brilliant lyricist and poet, I thought for sure that this book would be one of the best autobiographies I would ever read. About halfway through the book Chuck explains why his ballads aren't as good as his rockers. He said it was because he is unable to place himself in a song, and that he is unable to convey his own emotions in song. That to me sums up this book. (His best songs, he states, are stories of other people.) As I was reading, it sounded like Chuck just went through is accounting receipts because all he does is talk about the things he bought, and when he bought them, and how much money he made at each show, which are things that accounting records could show. Who would remember the price of their sixth Cadillac? There are the expected sexual deviations, but even then I felt like I was only getting part of the story. I expected to hear about his songwriting and his early seminal Chess years. Instead I got a braggart going on and on about his wealth and conquests, and how much smarter he is than everyone around him. I got this book used and at a cheap price. I recommend you do the same.
Rating: Summary: Perfect Note-for-Note Transcriptions of Original Chuck Berry Review: The guitar tablature in this book is 100% ACCURATE... I am using this book with both 'Chuck Berry: The Great Twenty-Eight' and a CD looping program called 'Transkriber 2.0', which allows me to slow down the original recordings and repeat selected passages as necessary. After hours of working through several songs I can vouch for the complete authenticity of the guitar transcriptions, note for note. And tell Tchaikovsky the news: Chuck Berry INVENTED Rock-and-Roll guitar...and Keith Richards, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Dave Davies, John Fogerty, Steve Vai, and Eddie Van Halen certainly got the news... And if you too want to learn how to 'really' play Chuck Berry's songs and guitar riffs, as Chuck played them himself, get this terrific book! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. lr

Rating: Summary: Great guitar TAB book of 16 famous Berry songs Review: This Hal Leonard book of Chuck Berry music is a must have for any aspiring Rock and Roll guitarist. You get the exact E form boogie rhythm parts as well as the lead solos for the most famous Rock and Roll songs in History, "Johnny B. Goode", "Roll Over Beethoven", "Little Queenie" and 13 more. Also included are a glossary of the TAB conventions used and little trivia about the different songs, e.g. "Recorded by the Stones or the Beattles, etc. Finally this book is great because you get a real feel for Berry's poetic talent as well as an understanding of how Berry turned the Blues into Rock and Roll by changing the Rhythm and playing the two string double stops at lightening speed. "Maybe someday you'll see your name in lights saying 'Johnny B. Good Tonight!'". -John Bremer

Rating: Summary: SOME KIND OF AUTOBIOGRAPHY INDEED Review: You will either come out of this book saying that man is a sex maniac,or you will say to yourself at least he is honest.Whatever option you may choose, the facts remain the same,CHUCK BERRY more than anybody else is the one who helped shaped rock music the way we came to understand it.After all, what is rock but sex put to music. You may beleive that my definition is simplistic, but if you think about it,it is not far from the truth.Still parts of this book(and i do not consider myself a puritan)shocked me,and i am sure some of you will feel the same.Do we really need to know about his sexual prowess that unfortunately proves that the man has an ego bigger than CASANOVA?I still like CHUCK BERRY's music a lot,but CHUCK BERRY the man is a big disapointment. He at least recognizes that MUDDY WATERS is responsible for his recording career at CHESS records ,and that LOUIS JOURDAN was his favorite singer. To resume,i must say that if you choose not to read this book,i won't blame you. There are better autobiographies on the market.
