Rating: Summary: Clara the Early Years : The Story of the Pug Who Ruled My Li Review: If you love pugs, you'll love this book. Even if you haven't been owned by a pug, the tale is hilarious. The author has since passed away and it makes this story even more poignant.
Rating: Summary: Surprise! Kaufman and Clara are funny. Review: As a recent Pug owner, I couldn't pass this book up, and I'm sure glad I didn't. Margo Kaufman is very, very funny.Kaufman discusses her love of Pugs and her history of ownership. The standout is, of course, Clara, a 12-pound Pug who demands attention wherever the couple goes. She is such an adorable companion that Kaufman finds it impossible to travel anywhere without Clara, even on book-signing tours. A large portion of this book focuses on an international adoption, but--believe it or not--this doesn't distract from the story. In fact, it makes for a sometimes-funny, sometimes-touching tale. If you love Pugs, pick this book up. You won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: This book was so fun to read Review: I agree with the other reviewers...I am saddened by the passing of Margo Kaufman...We really lost someone special in her. Now concerning the book, It was extremely funny. Kaufman's descriptions are not overbearing, she describes scenes, without you paying attention to the words she uses, and draws you in. The book read like a conversation with the author over coffee. Clara the title character and her nemesis Sophie are memorable with distinct personalities. Oh and to those of you who have read the book already--one phrase: "Sophie Puppet-time". I laughed for at least five minutes. I don't think I'd want Sophie for a pet, but she was easily my "Favorite Pug in a Supporting Role." This book was a fun quick read that I didn't want to end. When I finally finished it, I was thinking is that it. I wanted the story to keep going. I'm sure you'll feel the same way when you read it.
Rating: Summary: PUG OWNER FOR 21 YEARS AND STILL CRAZY ABOUT PUGS! Review: Nothing melts or breaks your heart like a pug. This is a wonderful book that captures the essence of pug ownership. When I see a pug on the street I have to stop. When I see a pug on a TV commercial I have to watch. And when I saw the cover of this book I had to read it.
Rating: Summary: Pug Owner & Kaufman Fan Review: I was very saddened to hear that Margo Kaufman passed away two months ago from cancer. I so LOVED this book and was looking forward to "Clara: The Later Years." After I heard about her death, all I could think was: "Poor Clara! She must miss her terribly." I'm a Pug owner and really identified with Clara's antics. Kaufman "speaks" for Clara in a wonderfully, humorous way. Pugs truly are the clowns of the dog world and Clara seems to be no exception. The book is also about the adoption of Kaufman's son. Her endless piles of paperwork and the adoption forms she had to process is beautifully interwoven with Clara's sensing that there's a change coming. Kaufman makes even the toughest, heart wrenching situations incredibly funny. Her trip to Russia to pick up her son was artfully written. I almost wished Clara had gone along on that trip because it would have made the journey even more humorous than it already was. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who wants to laugh out loud. You don't even have to like Pugs to enjoy Clara's adventures. I would especially recommend this book to anyone pursuing a foreign adoption. The red tape that Kaufman had to go through was astounding to me. Again, I was so sad to hear about her death, especially because she left behind the son that she spent a year trying to adopt. She will be missed! Not only by Clara, her husband and her son Nicholas, but by the thousands of readers that enjoy her wonderful sense of humor.
Rating: Summary: Comedy and after -- tragedy Review: I read "Clara -- the Early Years" two weeks ago and found it hilarious. Her wry, witty, heartfelt observations of pug love, new mom-hood, and life in general really rang true. As a pug owner, new mom, and fellow ironic observer of the human condition, I loved Margo's sense of humor and ability to laugh at herself and her challenges. I was shocked to read in this month's Pug Talk that she passed away of breast cancer at 46. She will be sorely missed. I hope that she was able to write about this experience before she died so that we can all share in her feelings, but want to impress on her family that she has already enriched many lives.
Rating: Summary: Great Review: I love this book so much. I've read it over and over and over. If you like pugs this is a must. Dog lovers will love it too. It's one of my fav. books. I love it to death.
Rating: Summary: In Loving Memory of Margo Kaufman Review: I loved this book so much. I read it when my mom was sick with terminal cancer. Now I just read in the LA Times that Margo Kaufman passed of breast cancer last month. Margo, you will be deeply missed by so many! Your family is in my prayers.
Rating: Summary: Wonderfully witty, and very true about life with a pug Review: I had the wonderful pleasure of reading many of Ms. Kaufman's articles in Pug Talk over 10 years ago and truly enjoyed the escapades of her other pugs, Bess and Stella. I am the lucky owner of a very similar black pug, Jake (who, as I was reading this book, turns out to be Clara's uncle; her "dad" is Jake's litter mate brother). This book is hysterical, accurate (for pug owners), emotional, and a real page turner. Pug owners will not be able to put it down and dog lovers will find in engaging, too. Ms. Kaufman has a wicked sense of humor and is always a joy to read. Ms. Kuafman passed away on March 31, 2000. My sympathies to her husband, son, and pug "daughters." I am so grateful for all the times that she made me laugh and for the legacy that she leaves behind in her writing.
Rating: Summary: wow! Review: It was a funny twist to the tales of pugs. I've read this book so many times! I finish it and start it again! I love it so much. If you love pugs or dogs or animals this is a must read and a perfenct gift.
