Rating: Summary: A Must for any Pug Owner Review: If you have a pug you will love this book. Pugs have their own way about them, and Margo Kaufman captures their quirks perfectly. Her writing style is funny and warm, and she is quite easy to read. Clara will remind you of your own pug over and over again!
Rating: Summary: Clara: The Early Years - Review: I liked this book, although I found it easier to put down towards the end of the book as the focus became more on foreign adoption than Clara the pug. Margo is a wonderful writer. If you aren't totally enthralled with her story, then at least get out your Webster's and look up some of the words she intersperses throughout her story. Besides laughing my way through the book, I learned the meanings of many new words by the time I'd finished it. For those who are wondering about Clara's whereabouts after Margo, sadly, passed away three years ago (June 2000), I have been informed that she is living with Margo's family. I wish I could tell you more but that is all I know at this point. Clara: The Early Years is a wonderful book - Margo Kaufman was, undoubtedly, a very talented writer and author. May God rest her soul.
Rating: Summary: A story with very little pug in it Review: I love pugs and was so excited to read a story about a pug. But as I started to read I realized there was really very little about about pugs and much more about the authors life. I kept reading hoping the pugs would get the intergal part they deserved and was disapointed until the end.
Rating: Summary: more on pugs, please Review: I am a pug owner. I love this dog breed and was excited to read this book. However, this book was much less about pugs than it was about the author congratulating herself on her fabulous life and her fabulous pug, Clara. So much of what she said about Clara seemed to be in her imagination, it wasn't the greatest read. Plus, the chapters toward the end of the book about adoption were a bit long. In other words: more on pugs, please. The excerpts about Clara are hilarious, but I found her attitude toward her other pug (Sophie) disturbing and rude.
Rating: Summary: I Love this book Review: I so rarely laugh out loud while reading, but I still do with this one, even though I have read it 5 times. Clara is so endearing! Some readers feel that the book runs out of steam when Ms. Kaufman goes to Russia to adopt her baby. While I would have enjoyed just reading about Clara some more, I felt that the other parts of the book were equally as enjoyable and funny. I was very sad to learn of Ms. Kaufman's death in 2000. She has brought myself and many, many other readers such humor and fun in her books. I will be re-reading about her and Clara for years to come, and hoping that Ms. Kaufman (and Clara, wherever she is!) are at peace.
Rating: Summary: The story of the adoption process that ruled Margo's life Review: Clara is cute, but the story of the adoption process is not. Neither is Ms. Kaufman's blatant materialism. Her comment of wanting a child, any child as long as it's cute was pitiful. Actually, I can't stand kids which is why I have pugs instead. For unlike children pugs are greatful, always cute, adoring and not an investment in tragedy. So why would I give a hoot about Kaufman's boring and arduous adoption process???? For the love of pugs, don't waste your time with this book!!
Rating: Summary: disappointing Review: If I finish a book it automatically gets three stars. And finish this one I did even though I skipped a lot of paragraphs regarding the adoption of the russian child. The author, who quite frankly, is not real likable uses her pug Clara (who is of course, the most interesting dog on the planet according to Margot and supposedly EVERYONE Clara encounters) to sell a book that is ultimately about adopting a Russian baby. So if you are interested in reading a book that has a pug in it but is ultimately about adopting a baby from a foreign country this is your book.
Rating: Summary: A Wonderful and Funny Book for Pug Lovers Review: Margo Kaufman herself is a fantastic writer, and this is, in my opinion, her best book (although that may just be because I am obsessed with pugs). Everything is from a true pug-owner's point of view, and it is so hilarious. A great book, with amazingly described pugs. I don't know how she can describe the puggy, puggiful pugness of these wonderful dogs (if you would call them that).
Rating: Summary: A Pug Lover Must Have! Review: I absolutely loved this book! If you own a pug. you will identify with the pug personalities Ms. Kaufmann was blessed to be owned by! One of the few books I've read that made me laugh out loud! Don't miss this one!
Rating: Summary: True, so true. Review: Having recently purchased a black pug puppy about the time I bought the book, I have really enjoyed the comparisons with my Bilbo and Ms. Kaufman's Clara. In fact, I have learned a lot about pugs (Bilbo is my 2nd) by reading this book. I find myself laughing out loud and thinking, "this is so true," when Ms. Kaufman describes the antics and shenanigans of Clara. I'm now having fantasies about Bilbo becoming a star like Clara and putting ME into the spotlight. I'll wake from that dream soon enough.
