Summary: Used by AFI, NYU, etc. - Comprehensive and Insightful
Review: There is a reason that AFI, NYU, and other major film schools are using Schreibman's book. It lives up to its title - it really covers things from A to Z. Whether you want to understand the union rules for key grips, do's and dont's of scheduling the first day of shooting on an indie feature, tips on working with a composer, where to find the money to produce a film, how to budget, or a hundred other producing topics - this book is the place to go. If you are going to try and make an indie film - this is certainly one of the must read books.

Summary: Macro and Micro
Review: What Myrl Schreibman has done is no small achievement. Producers are some of the most misunderstood creatures in the filmmaking kingdom. As a producer, I can attest to that. Schreibman has illuminated some of the larger contributions producers of all types make to the creative process of filmmaking. But he doesn't stop there--he also explores the details of the work the producer must undertake to insure the success of any production. This insight and the balance he strikes between the creative and administrative (imbued with Myrl's years of experience as a producer), is a great gift. This is the best book of its type available and deserves to be on the bookshelf of every film student and every lover of movies.

Summary: MY FAVORITE MOVIE
Review: When I was a little guy I saw a movie on television about a guy who had a watch that he used to stop time. I remember seeing it sitting on my mom's sofa in Brooklyn and watching it three times wishing I had that watch for myself. I haven't seen the movie since but remembered that it was about a gold watch and I always talked about it to my sister. She went to Columbia University film school and bought this book THE INDIE PRODUCERS HANDBOOK when she saw the name of the movie in it "The Girl The Gold Watch and Everything". She bought one for herself and then one for me. I read the book from cover to cover as soon as I found out its author made the movie and I read about some of the things he did which were startling at the time they were on television.(It was before all the digital effects that are used today). He was quite an inventive producer to think about how to do that. The book was very easy reading and did not read like an academic textbook which made it very user friendly. It clearly made me aware of the myriad of problems involved in movies since I always thought they were so simple to do. I was very surprised. "The Girl The Gold Watch and Everything" added to my fantasy life as a child and it was a pleasure finding out who the producer was that made it possible. I thank him for that. If I ever go to Los Angeles, I will try to look him up and thank him personally.

Summary: So You Want To Be A Producer?
Review: You can spend your entire adult life trying to get your movie or television show made through the studio or network system. But it's alot like winning the lottery -- sure you have a chance, but it's slim. So for those of us that won't wait for someone else to decide our destiny for us, we grab the bullsh-t by the horns and create our own opportunities and work. But do not be fooled, that is a slippery slope, as well. But should you decide to produce your own film or produce for someone else, you must be armed with money to burn (or be willing to be a slave to the favors you have called in)and the tools and skills to pull it off. Mr. Schreibman's book is the blue print, the bible, the secret weapon to help you get your project off the page, onto the stage, and ultimately, on the screen. His practical and realistic approach to producing will keep you on time and on budget -- an asset that will serve you later when you are using someone else's money. Memorize this manuscript and spout it's wisdom as your own, afterall, that's the way they do it in Hollywood...
