Summary: Some practical advice...other advice good for a laugh
Review: Although a lot of the tips/advice offered in this book are impractical to apply (hence the 3 stars), there are some good tips. If you don't like to play politics, you can still use the information to protect yourself. You might be suprised, but there are many people in companies who like to manipulate. They may pass as your friends, but beware.

Summary: Insightful!
Review: As the book jacket states, "There are plenty of books out there that show you how to climb the corporate ladder by applying the good old-fashioned virtues of honesty, integrity, loyalty and hard work. This book isn't one of those." In fact, this manual isn't for the faint of heart. It contains some of the nastiest, dirtiest tricks around for getting ahead, including how to punish your subordinates, take your supervisor's job and spread vicious rumors. Although the battle imagery can be grating, what the author writes is (unfortunately) usually true. Those climbing the corporate ladder will benefit from his advice. Those already at the top apparently already know everything in this book. Still, it's entertaining and easy to read - perfect for lunchtime. We at getAbstract recommend this book for corporate climbers willing to do what it takes.

Summary: Too true
Review: Based on my experinces in 20 years as a manager, I can guarantee that this book is right on target. This book will open your eyes to the political strategies around you. It explains well the games that are played constantly in organizations. The listed techniques are used by those with political skills just as tennis strokes are used in a tennis match: the political game is a constant exchange that utilizes a wide variety of "strokes". If you are an honest and competent manager who does not use these techniques, this book may help you to defend yourself against political opportunists or failing co-workers who want to defeat you, control you, or blame you for their failures. It may also help you to protect yourself from subordinates who may want to subvert your performance as a manager. If you already politically savvy, this book may still provide interesting and entertaining reading.

Summary: Simply the best!
Review: I have read hundreds of books on management, but this is my favorite and has saved me many times. I have a 25 year military background and simply could not grasp the political realities of a corporate environment until this very readable book with all of it's practical wisdom spelled it out for me. A must-read!

Summary: Anyone on the corporate ladder should read "eat or be eaten"
Review: I recommend "eat or be eaten" to complete any business education. I wish I'd read this book ten years ago; it wouldn't saved a lot of time and frustration. Phil Porter gives us a perspective that you won't hear in any corporate or college training program. Everyone can identify with roads to failure he outlines in the book, and use his advice to turn them into success.

Summary: Learn the Rules
Review: I worked for a publicly traded company recently. This was my first experience of working for a firm this size. I was suprized that most other employees were relatives or friends of existing employees. I also butted heads with my boss, who arrived at 9am, went to breakfast until 10, went to lunch for 2 hours, had a 6 inch unorganized pile of paper on his desk, etc. This guy was a dud. Anyway, his boss put the spin on me that I had insubordination issues. I needed help and sought out a good book on office politics.

This book is it! Phil Porter explains the nepotism and other incest of corprate politics. He decribes the techniques that the MCP(Master Corprate Politician) must be aware of and employ to survive in this environment.

I was pleasantly suprised to discover that the author is an Accountant and a military vet. So am I, and I made the mistake of trying to rely on a good work ethic and honor code gained from the military in jobs. I also made the mistake of using logic and ethics in these positions.

This book is harsh, funny, and unbelivable. The rule of jungle warfare(real) is that you must adapt to the environment and ever-changing conditions. This is also true in the guerilla war in the cubes and corner offices.

If you need help with office politics-BUY THIS NOW!!!

Thanks Phil!

Summary: Simply the best!
Review: I'd put this book on the must-read book for management books. The reason is not so much how to master the corporate political techniques the book explains. Rather, this book identifies the most common methods so that you may be aware of them, so that you can recognize them and better counter them. Not so many people corporate backstabbers trying to get their way to the top, but no one wants to be bushwacked by an eager-beaver just playing the right games. So, I'd read this book for the great defensive leasons, instead of employing it as on offensive tool towards your way to the top.

Summary: The bible of ' Corporate Politics '
Review: If you are like me and feel that you are an honest, diligent, hard working, employee but get frustrated with the office politics, then this is the book for you.
Porter explains with great examples of how you (the above description) will be tossed around like garden salad if you don't understand the fundamentals of the office war.
Believe me, it is a war out there.
I only wish that I had read this book years ago.
Porter goes into details of how you can recognise what the MCP (Master Corporate Politician) is about and how he/she is trying to destroy you. Tips and techniques and real life examples
are all contained in the book to the benefit of the reader.
Always remember the number #1 golden rule. 'It's not what you know, it's who you know' and Porter explains in depth ALL of the golden rules.
If you are stuck in an office all day long. Then please do yourself a favour and purchase this book. It will save you a
LOT of heartache and wondering of the things like ' What did I do wrong'
' Why don't they take any notice of me ', ' What do I have to do to get the them to look at me'?

Then this book is a must for the office worker, YOU!

Summary: Workin' for the Man
Review: Looking back now, I can't believe I naively thought management really wanted feedback, input and insight to the day-to-day operations from a hard-working, independent thinking individual like myself and some of my co-workers. After being duly chastised for bringing up concerns about a new "direction" the department was headed, I almost quit. I remembered a co-worker talking about this book. I ordered it as soon as I left the office that day (along with Sun Tzu's "Art of War"). I got it last night and I can't put it down. This is the straight dope on the Man. It ain't pretty, but it fully explains many of the decisons and actions of management on all levels. The kid gloves and rose-colored glasses are off.
