Summary: You Only Know Half The Story
Review: Filmmaker Kevin Smith took the Hollywood establishment by surprise with his low budget independent film success Clerks. After that film put him on the map, he followed up with Mallrats and Chasing Amy--a very effective and different kind of romantic comedy. The book features the scripts for Clerks and Chasing Amy.

What makes these two early efforts so good is the fact that they didn't seem like typical films from tintsletown. Here Mallrats is excluded because, although very good, qualifies as a "studio" motion picture, the other two are not. The strength of Clerks and Amy is Smith's ability to have his characters and their curcumstances seem real. As the reader--viewer I knew folks like Dante, Holden and many others. Over the course of my working life, I spent a lot of time as a retail clerk, for various outlets. Smith captured that world and its citizens to to a tee in both scripts. His range as a screenwriter is highlighted by the fact that even though both stories share elements, characters, humor and certain motifs Clerks goes for the laughs in a more overt way, while Amy's story is more adult the humor is more subtle.

The book features a well written intorduction from Smith about the story behind the story of each film. Deleted material and notes are also part of the book, making that stuff my favorite section. The book has 336 pages.

This is a must have for fans of Smith's early career. Not only do Clerks and Amy make good movies--they make for excellent reading material as well.

Summary: Kevin Smith is one of, if not the best director ever.
Review: First off, anyone who sees Kevin's movies realizes that they are raunchy and disgusting, so if you go out and see one of his movies because it happened to be a commercial success, then I feel sorry for you. I personally find the Jersey Trilogy to be the greatest set of movies ever, and this book covers the best (Clerks) and the different one (Chasing Amy). Different? you ask, well if you think about it, it is unlike his other movies. Kevin's movies are great. Not just for the dialogue but for the whole thing. Kevin Smith rules the world of directors in my eyes and I am definitely looking forward to Dogma, especially since Jay and Silent Bob are almost the main characters.

Summary: GO TO THE STORE!
Review: I can't express in words how funny Clerks is. I don't get tired of it laughing every time. Kevin Smith a very talented writer makes a movie about two store clerks (one serious about his job, one not) that try and get it through a wacky weird day. I have the comic of Clerks which is just as funny. Chasing Amy on the other hand isn't so great. Not to funny. More of a drama then a comedy. I would give Chasing Amy 3 stars. Clerks rated R: for explicit language. Chasing Amy rated R: for explicit language

Summary: Smith Strikes Back
Review: If you're here considering buying the screenplays in the first place, and are just looking for a little assurance that it's OK, then I say go on! Do it! If you haven't seen the movies and are going to just buy the script, well... we all have our little absurdities. Take for granted that you need to see the movies, it's meant to be seen that way. If for some reason you hate movies... well I think you might still find reading the script rewarding. The humor is still quite evident. In fact some of it was so plainly ridiculous that I find myself ready to spurt out with a laugh just thinking about it. Mr. Smith is uncannily refreshing with his lack of a strong superego - many people will find some of the dialogue gross. If you can get past that, and you should, you will discover a very warm, ironic writer who, in this writers opinion, is having a great impact already on this generation, and hopefully will continue on through the years. Three Cheers for Smith!

As a footnote, I should add that there is a fairly worthwhile introduction by the writer. Furthermore, there is (Especially in 'Amy') quite a bit of dialogue that is cut or altered, and even sometimes added to. And, of course, the comics.

Summary: EXCELLENT!! Has all the scenes that were cut from the movies
Review: If you've watched Clerks or Chasing amy and liked them even a little, GET THIS BOOK!!! It has the cut scenes from both movies (ie the scenes that didn't make it into the final theatre ed.) You might be wondering why i gave this a 9 and not a 10. This is simply because I was distraught that the Mallrats screenplay was not included. I mean, how can you have 2 of the Jersey Trilogy screenplays and not have the third? Oh well, perfection is hard to attain, but this comes pretty damn close.
