Summary: I love, Love, LOVE this book!
Review: This is an essential book for anyone who has ever thought about buying a DVD. Ever since I bought my DVD player I had no idea where to even begin my DVD collection. This book has certainly pointed me in the right direction to begin creating the ultimate DVD library for myself and my son. It is eloquently written and easy to understand. The write-ups on the DVD extras and special features are particularly informative. Definitely a must have!

Summary: Excellent Introduction to Classic Films on DVD
Review: This is an excellent book for younger collectors who may not know about classic films. Also, I think it would make a good gift this holiday season, especially for those folks getting a new DVD player. The book was fun to read with lots of good information on collecting DVDs.

Summary: Surprisingly Nice
Review: When I first began looking at this book, I feared it would be simply dreadful, but once I began reading the reviews I was hooked. The reviews are compact and effective, what good review writing should be. I personally didn't really need the book to teach me what DVDs to buy--I've been a serious movie lover for a long time and already owned more than half of the DVDs described in it--but I thought the reviews were so good that the book would give me insights into films that I had rejected and a reason to reconsider some of them. It has.

The book reviews probably just the right number of films (134) for the beginner DVD buyer. The selection of titles is also what it should be for beginners. Half of the titles are from the dozen years from 1990 to 2002, the other half are great classics from the sixty preceding years (the earliest film is from 1931). Although they don't say so right out, the authors' obvious goal is to turn their readers into better informed and more experienced movie lovers rather than mere custodians of worthy DVD libraries.

For the serious movie lover, of course, 134 reviews are not enough. If only the authors would write a similar book that reviewed the best 500 films from the early silents to now, whether they are already on DVD or not. Now that would be something to collect!

So I am completely won over to this book. I would gladly give it to someone to wean him or her from the usual dross promoted by Hollywood, whether it was to buy the DVDs or simply rent the films. At the price it is irresistible. I couldn't resist it.

Summary: Truly Helpful
Review: With all these "Special Edition" "Extended Version" and "Director's Cut" DVD's floating around, this cheap little book is worth the money to anyone building a library of DVDs. What's on the three-disk Fellowship of the Rings that isn't on the original DVD release? Which version of Casablanca has the interview with the writers? Which 80-dollar "Special Edition" of the movie is the same old DVD but in a fancy box with a poster? The writers of this pocket guide have watched all the supplemental material and can tell you what's there. They're not afraid to tell you what's worthwhile and what's drivel. As a screenwriter and an author (Crafty Screenwriting), I like to watch my DVDs over and over. I'm glad I've added this book to my library.
