Summary: for die-hard fans only
Review: Hanke's "analysis" are sometimes interesting, but this book is only for die-hard Burton fans who must own EVERYTHING on the man.

Summary: Howard Stern Was Right!
Review: I bought this book after Howard Stern said he loved it on his radio show when interviewing Tim Burton, and I now know why. This is a really terrific book about this great director--insightful, thoughtful, well-researched, and well-written. It's adult and intelligent and not at all fannish, but rather the perfect book for anyone who wants to better know and understand Burton and his films.

Summary: Sounds like an evoking tale about America's unique filmaker.
Review: I haven't read this book. But what I will tell you is that I was able to speak with the author via instant message. He answered my questions and was well...very down to earth. I'm glad that he was very receptive to my questions..And I truly greatful for his time. Go buy the book, I surely will.

Summary: Armchair psychology from a hack
Review: I try to get my hands on anything about Tim Burton so I was quite excited when I found this book. What a disappointment! Rather than being about Tim Burton or his work, this is merely an excuse for a hack writer to spew his dime-store psychology about what makes Tim Burton tick. First off, Hanke's "insights" and conclusions about Burton are juvenile, but then - as if that's not enough - he writes things about Burton and Burbank (Where I grew up as well as Tim Burton) that are out-and-out lies. I hate Burbank as much as anyone, but if you're trying to tear it down there's plenty of amunition to use without resorting to falsehoods. Any Tim Burton fan should avoid this book! Read "Burton on Burton" instead and save yourself the aggravation. I wish I had.

Summary: A Rewarding Read
Review: I was expecting a pretty fair Tim Burton career overview with maybe a handful of personal stories and anecdotes, but instead I got a deeply insightful look at Burton's work and his personality as reflected in his work. A very pleasant surprise indeed. Normally, I get less than I hope for out of a book. Nice to get more for a change.

I see by the reviews here that not everyone has been so impressed, which is only understandable, but it doesn't take a genius to see which of the reviews themselves show the greatest degree of insight and thought and I'd expect that any intelligent reader could too.

Summary: ....he wanted to be like Vincent Price!
Review: I'm not a fan of Tim Burton per se, but I keep trying to find out what's happening with the Vincent Price documentary that he did. So for fans of actors Burton worked *with,* this is also a good read!

Summary: Can you say, Great book?!!!
Review: I've read the book - I loved it. Fans of Burton will learn a lot, and be forced to think about what Burton's films really mean. Fans will be forced to think! What a concept!

Summary: No good
Review: It's very boring and all. I've read and re-read my copy of Burton on Burton, and this book provides me with no new information. Hanke even goes so far as to quote from the interviews Salisbury assembled into Burton on Burton. It's annoying, reading through this book, since Hanke seems to insist that he knows exactly what's going on in Burton's mind. He over-analyses absolutely everything, bringing Burton's films down to a level where nothing is truly worth anything. According to Hanke, Pee Wee's Big Adventure is all about sexual stuff. Honestly, for three pages, every other word is sex. Methinks perhaps Hanke is not so much telling us what Burton thinks, but what he would think if he was Burton.

Also, the writing feels to me like something I might write on a late night to turn in the next morning to my 10th grade english teacher. The style seems to be that of an essay, not a book.

My final complaint is the huge editing mistake I found. At the beginning of the chapters, Hanke gives a quote. At the beginning of one, I was shocked to see the words "I know I am but what are you?" Anyone who's seen the movie can tell you the quote it "I know you are but what am I?", and it amazes me that such a large error slipped through and made it into print.

Summary: An informative and entertaining read for fans and critics.
Review: Ken Hanke does an excellent job of covering each Tim Burton film. He dedicates a few chapters to each Burton film-discussing everything from the pre-production stage to the reviews of the films by the country's leading movie critics. What is really interesting about this book is how Hanke takes each film and breaks down the story line-discussing both the genius of Burton's aesthetic and story accomplishments as well as the way Burton reveals more of his personality in each film that is and has been overlooked. It is obvious that Hanke is a Burton fan, but he is very objective in this book-especially when discussing a Burton film-he does not overlook some of the flaws and/or mistakes Burton makes. This book is very entertaining and both fans and critics of Burton will get a lot out of it in my opinion. My only complaint is there is not enough pictures. If the book contained pictures of each film that was discussed in the book, it would be even better. I bought this book about 3 weeks ago, and have read it cover to cover about 5 times. I recommend this book to everyone who has ever enjoyed a Tim Burton film, and recommend it also to people who feel they are "missing something" when watching a Burton film. This book is great. It has made me appreciate and respect Tim Burton even more as an artist and a person.
