Summary: a capable author succeeds in following a tough act
Review: I enjoyed Cunningham's portrayal of Liriel and Fyodor, two radically different characters brought together by destiny. Rarely in fantasy novels do characters ask themselves basic questions about their own evolving worldviews, and it is a treat when someone creates fiction with that level of depth.

The cross Cunningham bears is that anything about the Drow will always be compared to Salvatore, which really isn't fair to Cunningham but such are the travails of writing about the same topic as one of the greats. Her style is different than that of Salvatore but is entertaining in its own way.

Worth the read.

Summary: Great Book
Review: I have enjoyd reading the book very much. I strongly recommend this book for those who want a good reading. Elaine shows us here a part of the drow society, and, I must tell that I'm not pleased at all with her vision.Drows are evil, and the kill for pleaseru. This is partialy dismised int this book, but for this, the book is great.

Summary: E. C. is a great and awesome storyteller!
Review: At first, I was reluctant to read a book by another author of the Underdark. We all know that Mr. Salvatore is the master! The book easily flowed and by the time I was done. I couldn't believe the book was over. I can't wait for the next book! I loved the fact, that there were other Gods & Goddess besides the infamous spider queen. I was also fasinated with the community of drow outside of Menoberranzan dancing in the moonlight praising another Goddess.(I would like to see a cat fight between her and Lloth) I found Fyodor an interesting character even though little is known about him. All in all, this book is an interesting read. The transition from the underdark to the surface, I sensed that E.C. felt more at ease when the story took place on the surface. To be honest, if your a diehard Salvatore fan, I doubt you will like this book. I had to read this book with a new pair of eyes. Just remember that this is Liriel's story & not a female copycat of the well known powerful, but lovable hero from Menoberranzan.

Summary: I'd noticed something
Review: It seemed to me, all the people who didn't just love this book were comparing it do another author. You shouldn't done, I enjoyed more because I'd never read another book about the Drow. The characters, were far from perfect there very flaws and quirks made it interesting. The switch back and forth of Liriel to enemny, to friend with Fyodor is fun to read about. The second books goes into more detail. I just loved, it's a good thing I nothing to compare I guess.

Summary: Yeah, it was good.
Review: Liriel gave me a different perspective on the Underdark. While Drizzt struggles against the ways of his people with a passion, Liriel is trying to have the best of both worlds, in true Drow fashion. She's not really good, like Drizzt, or really evil, the way most Drow are depicted. She sits on the fence, almost true neutral. She does what's good for her, and you see that quite a bit in the novel. To put nicely, she's very "practical". To be blunt she's a bit of a brat. The only complaint I have about the book is that it makes the killing and intrigue you expect a little too light. Salvatore's Underdark was extremely tense and the Drow seem paranoid in turns. In DOTD, especially at the start of the book, it seems like good old fashioned high society backstabbing and squabbling. The fighting and killing described in the book left me kinda cold. Since they are Drow, maybe that was the intent... The positive part of this is that you see some of the drow culture come out. I didn't think Drow dressed up and went out to party until I read this book. They almost seem like they have...fun. The other Drow dieties thrown in are a nice touch, and I would like to see more of that in other novels. The book doesn't run quite as smoothly as the Dark Elf Trilogy did, but it's a good read if you want more Underdark.

Summary: Awesome Book!
Review: This was the first Drow book I have read, and I think I can easily describe it with one word. Captivating. Once I started DOTD I could not put it down. I can't wait to read Cunninghams's second Drow book!

Summary: Too bad
Review: It really is a crime to let anyone other than Salvatore write about Menzoberranzan. Under Salvatore's careful tutelage Menzoberranzan is the type of evil city one can only imagine; his one character with perspective(Jarlaxle, NOT Drizzt) is enigmatic, and the whole city is mired in a bloody haze that conveys the frantic struggle for Lloth's favor that grips the drow.

Elaine Cunningham's attempt flushes all this, to a large degree. Don't get me wrong, the book isn't all bad, but while Liriel is off partying like its an orgy, Drizzt was helping his family obliterate other clans. It simply adds an atmosphere that ruins the magical setting.

Liriel is not really as engaging as Drizzt, and none of the other characters show much promise. One's fascination is Rothe herding - oooooh!

This book is like Casablanca with B movie actors and a lousy director - its still Casablanca, but not nearly as good. (Kind of like Batman I vs. Batman IV.) If you aren't planning on reading Salvatore, pick this one up. If you've already read Homeland, however, there isn't anything in this that will satisfy your appetite.

Summary: This book was everything I like in books
Review: This book has every thing that I look for in a book in it. It was fast paced exiting and a book that was hard to put down. I say everyone who likes to read should read this book.

Summary: love it
Review: I love Drizzt and I wish the humans of Earth were all like him. I was very happy with this book. It takes us into the city of menzo and lets us know what happen after the drow war. For i as was wondering about that after i finshed R.A. Salvatore's books. I found that reading both of Elaine's books is important to understand the whole story. For true D&D fans know that there are good Drow as well as evil just like all other races. I hope that Drizzt and Liriel meet each other and become friends. Then Drizzt will know that he is not alone. That is what is so wonderful about TSR books, all the races blend together to make one whole adventure. I have read every single book of the forgotten realms and other worlds so i know it is true. If you love Drow and adventure then read Elaine's 2 novels of the underdark.

Summary: no sir, I didn't like it
Review: Maybe I was expecting another 'Homeland', but DOTD just didn't do anything for me. I couldn't care about any of the characters or what was going on so I don't think I'll be reading the next book. A pity, I love the Drow.
