Rating: Summary: An incredible life story, you can't put it down!! Review: I have been waiting to read Chuck Negron's life story for MONTHS and was THRILLED when I finally got my copy!! His story is both horrendous but then very inspirational. I have tremendous respect for him with his openness and stark frankness. He tells it like it is and doesn't sweeten it up. If anyone were even thinking of trying drugs they should read this book and they would RUN the other way!! I absolutely couldn't put this book down once I started reading it. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is interested in reading about someone's horrible descent into the darkest, blackest hell imagineable and then his rise to redeem his life after 20 years of misery. His life would make a great rock and roll movie!!
Rating: Summary: One of the most compelling books I have ever read! Review: I lived across the street from Chuck and Nancy and went to school with them. He brought back in his own words what life was like growing up in the Bronx. He was a sweet, shy good guy. That is why this book was such a compelling read. He had high aspirations in those days and I knew he would succeed; but never did I think he would go through such pain and misery. My best wishes and thoughts go out to him and hope that the next half of his life is filled with only success and great love.

Rating: Summary: Chuck Negron, the voice of Three Dog Night, tells all! Review: Chuck leaves no stone unturned in this graphic, emotional, powerful, true-life tale of rock music's highs and lows...from private jets to homelessness and back again. Don't wait for the movie...this book is the WHOLE Dog tale.
Rating: Summary: It's all in the title! Review: A very personal, compelling expose of the Hollywood rock 'n roll scene of the 60's and 70's, how easy it is to get "sucked in" and how hard it is to climb out! But then the Three Dog Nightmare becomes the personal nightmare of Chuck Negron. His willingness and ability to expose his own personal degradations and shame over his heroin addicted behavior makes the book more than a condemnation of the drug culture. The reader gets insight into the physical addiction of heroin and the all-consuming need to "score". We begin to understand that heroin addiction is not about "feeling good", it's about "not feeling bad". We also understand that it's not a simple matter of just wanting to get off the drugs, but a soul searching, bottom of the dung heap decision that requires faith, work and an openness to the possibility of miracles. A must for Three Dog Night fans, rock 'n' rollers, addicts and the people who live with them and work with them, and maybe Robert Downey, Jr. Congratulations Chuck....for a wonderful book, the willingness to call it the way you saw it, and on turning your life around!
Rating: Summary: A powerful read Review: I'm too young to remember Three Dog Night during their glory days but ever since I heard their music as a child I've always been enthralled by it. Only recently have I found out that the songs Chuck sang lead on were the ones I loved the most. There was just something about his voice that captivated me. As I have recently been on a 70's era rock kick I have been revisiting the music of Three Dog Night. When I found this book I wanted to know more and had to read it. What I found was a well written piece filled with brutal honesty and candor that I couldn't put down until I had read every page. I had seen Chuck on a couple of VH1 shows and only heard a hint of what is drug addiction had done. To have it spelled out was truly disturbing but completely engaging. Chuck is a man who has taken responsibility for his actions and become stonger in the process. This book is a compelling insight into the world of sex, drugs and rock & roll and the triumph of the human spirit.
Rating: Summary: Second Chance Review: A strong story of rock and roll and personal excess. From what I heard and read prior to reading this I expected to find that Chuck had spent years living on the streets when he bottomed out during the '80's. But apparently due to his celebrity status and a very tolerant enabler this was prevented from happening or he may not be here to tell us about his life today. The stories from that time period focus on the absolute power heroin had on him and the company he found himself with. Everything took a back sit to his addiction. I found this part of his story to be particularly fascinating, the fact that one of the most successful and talented individual's you could imagine would trade everything positive in his life for thing's so negative. His rescue from drug addiction is equally fascinating. I recommend you read this and then pass it along to anyone prone to drug or alcohol abuse.
Rating: Summary: It's only a book Review: Having been through the nightmare of addiction and working a 12-step program myself, I'm almost offended by Mr. Negron's story. It's not the story, it's the blaming, the finger-pointing, the refusal to do what "the program" teaches us to -- take responsibility for our actions. I'm so disgusted that now, I skip over Chuck's songs.
Good for you, Chuck, for staying clean all these years. Shame on you, too, for taking others' inventories so publicly and putting personalities way before principles.
Rating: Summary: Impossible to put down Review: I've read this book several times and each time I do, I'm amazed at the life he's lead; from the highs to the lows, he's done it all.
This book is brutally honest. Had I written a book of this nature about my life, the gory details would have been omitted or dressed up to paint myself in a more positive light. It doesn't appear he's done that and he presents a warts-and-all picture of his life.
This book is FILLED with humourous, sad, desperate, maddening stories that will keep you reading late into the night. You will wonder how he survived to tell his story and will be glad he did.
Rating: Summary: A bit preachy at times Review: I was a huge Three Dog Night fan in high school. Chuck Negron had (and still has) a great voice.
However, it gets a little tiresome at times listening to all the excuses for his addiction problems. Many people had seen their parents divorce. Many others have wound up in foster homes. Most have not turned to drugs and alcohol. Most were not multi-millionaires before they hit 30.
I have never bought into the "disease" thing. Addiction is a weakness and a bad choice. You choose to take that first drink, first hit, etc. If you don't, then you don't become addicted. (With all the drug education these days telling you how bad it is, why would you bother?)
I've never understood why the people in "recovery" expect those of us who did what we were supposed to do all along (WITHOUT "crutches") to fawn all over them and tell them how wonderful they are 24/7 when they finally decide to stop killing themselves? Don't they think the rest of us have lives of our own?
That seems to me what Chuck Negron is doing in this book - constantly looking for a pat on the back.
Okay, Chuck - you beat addiction. What do you want? A medal?
