Summary: Three Dog Nightmare
Review: If you, as I, harbored any wistful, romantic teenaged fantasies about the California music scene of that era, this book will dispell any illusions about the perceived innocence of the stars you idolized or sighed over, such as Chuck Negron. It is hard to fathom anyone living so high dropping so low in life until you read this. The text between Chuck's first sentence - "I should be dead" - and the phrase, 300+ pages later, "I missed my life" - broke my heart. Brutal in its content yet occasionally tongue-in-cheek, it was a tough book to put down although I at times cringed. It certainly gave life to the line "Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll." Chuck throws around a lot of big names and does not pull any punches. Nor does he point fingers or play the victim. He takes responsibility for his self-destructive choices. I was left hoping his 'long road back' doesn't have any more potholes in its pavement.

Summary: A must-read for any Three Dog Night fan
Review: "Three Dog Nightmare" is a wonderfully written, compelling story about Chuck Negron, one of the vocalists of the legendary rock group Three Dog Night, who had a treasure trove of top ten hits between 1969 and 1974. "Three Dog Nightmare" is an insightful tour de force, and will take the average reader on a journey through Chuck's rise as a college basketball player, then as a singer in various bands leading up to Three Dog Night. It is in this group where Mr. Negron begins to experiment with various drugs, including cough syrup. He then discovers the more potent drugs (marijuana, LSD, cocaine) which will eventually lead to his downfall, and to the dismissal of Three Dog Night. At his lowest point, Chuck finds himself as a useless, burned out hardcore drug addict and eventually becomes homeless. Then, redemption sets in, finding success in beating his addiction at his 37th rehab center, Cri-Help. He finally gets his music career back on track, and agrees to get his message across to others, including to offer help to other hardcore drug users, like he was. Hence, "Three Dog Nightmare". Once you start reading this, you will not want to put it down! Also, you might want to pick up Chuck's CD "The Long Road Back". It is a wonderful accompaniment to the book. Both items are a must have for any Three Dog Night fan, as well as anyone facing personal struggles in their life. Enjoy!

Summary: Inspirational - A Must Read!
Review: I just finished the book at the end of June. I had a very difficult time putting this book down. I actually finished it in three days. I have always been a fan of Three Dog Night.

It amazes me that Chuck is still with us after all that he has been through. It seems as if he was always dodging death (Wonderland, etc.), and somehow managed to get through. Amazing!

The story is a first hand account of how destructive drugs can be. This book does not hold anything back. It is reflective, remorseful and even humorous at points.

I think that anyone who is battling any type of addiction would find this book uplifting. I will definitely be sharing this book with two drug abusers who are in my life.

I had the recent benefit of seeing Chuck in concert twice. He looks and sounds great. When you see him in person it is hard to believe that this man was a heavy drug user for so many years. What a triumphant comeback!

Summary: Three Dog Nightmare: The Chuck Negron Story
Review: I found this book to be an excellent read and a real page turner. Chuck if you're reading this, your life story is inspirational. As you said in your song "you don't expect an old friend to kick you when your down"! Don't concern yourself with those other 2, "that mean old dog is just a mutt and a stray". I have always been a fan, but after reading this book I admire him for what he has been able to accomplish for himself and his family. Reading how Chuck is helping others in similar situations as he was in, is a great way to demonstrate the idea of giving back for the miracles that are given to you! Keep up the good work Chuck -- YOU ARE BETTER THAN EVER!

Summary: Three Drug Night - interesting but depressing
Review: Chuck's honesty and willingness to share his embarassing and sometimes disgraceful behavior makes this book and interesting read. He does a good job of providing the history of the rise and fall of 3DN and what he was going through during that time. The only reason I did not give the book 5 stars is because so much of the book is devoted to Chuck's downward spiral into drugs. It is a tough and depressing read at times. It is hard to enjoy a book completely when you are sickened and disappointed by Chuck just about every time you turn a page. How good could Chuck and 3DN have been if they didn't destroy themsleves and the band? This bio will definitely change the way you think about 3DN.

Summary: Well-worth the read
Review: I've read dozens of books about rock stars who have found "God" and repented. Quite honestly I was expecting another "holy roller" tale and wasn't expecting to finish this book. Three Dog Night was never one of my favorite groups, primarily because of the overplaying of their records on top 40 stations. But reading Negron's book was interesting, informative, and honestly hard to imagine although I have no doubt he is telling the truth. It is unbelievable that someone could destroy their career and lose their fortune as he apparently did. All in all, one of the better tales about rock and roll, life on the road, and the trails and tribulations of having it all.

Summary: WHAT AN INSPIRING BOOK!
Review: I have been a fan of 3DN (especially Chuck) since 1969, saw them in concert many, many times over the years. I wondered what happened to Chuck when I saw the other two at an outdoor concert in Springfield IL in the mid-80's. Didn't realize what he was going through. Being a Gemini (also June 8) and a recovering alcoholic I found it quite amazing that we've gone through alot of the same things....being abandoned as a child, then as adult...you find your solace in something to deaden the pain. I understand. Thank you Chuck for sharing your life in such an honest, inspiring way....your story has helped me. I have "Am I Still in Your Heart?" it is beautiful and the answer to that question is "yes, Chuck you're still in my heart.....never really left. I thank God that your HP gave you your wonderful voice back. God bless you and your family. Oh by the way, I read the entire book in 2-1/2 days....and am going to read it again. Like the big blue books says, "We must be entirely honest with somebody if we expect to live or happily in this world."

Summary: Pulls no Punches
Review: "Three Dog Nightmare" is one of the most compelling rock biographies ever written.Chuck Negron unflinchingly gives the details of his 20 year addiction to heroin. The book is almost brutally honest. He definately doesn't spare himself as we see how he went from rock and roll millionaire to penniless junkie.I'll never be able to hear Three Dog Night songs in the same way again.A real page turner!

Summary: a real eye opener
Review: i have'nt had a chance to do much reading over the years but when i found out chuck wrote a book i thought i'd give it a go. it's not like most autobiographies i've read before.this one shoots straight from the hip with no punches being pulled just good old fashion straight talk. i don't know if chuck reads these reviews but i wish him alot of luck because it's an battle every waking minute to stay on the "wagon". all i can say is that this book made me wake up and smell the roses and not to take things for granted again. i recommend this book to everyone who is a fan and also to those who aren't a fan. i'm if you're not a fan you will be one when you're done! best book i've read in about 10 years!
