Summary: An excellent book for a beginner
Review: It is a very well explained book. It is a compilation of games. The games are easy to understand. They are not grandmaster games. Are amateur games that show typical errors in strategy. All the moves are explained in a very logical way: opening, strategy, etc. I read this book over and over. I strongly recommend it to club players of all strenghts. It is a very good book, easy to read and easy to understand. Lots of useful comments.

Summary: IMHO, better than Logical Chess
Review: It's hard not to compare Euwe's book to Chernev's Logical Chess Move by Move. The former World Champion doesn't annotate every single move, but that was always a gimmick anyway (how many times do you need to see 1-PK4 explained?).

Euwe includes more "dogs" than Chernev (such as a game featuring the patzer's opening), but it would be wrong to think his book is simpler than Chernev's. In fact, I was surpirsed at how many variations Euwe shows, including some fairly long ones. His selected games are a bit more tactical, while Chernev seems more concerned with principles and "rules" and is a bit more dogmatic. Admittedly, it's hard not to be somewhat dogmatic and simplistic when writing a book for lower level players, but Chernev is perhaps too much of a noodge for my taste.

Summary: A must for any chess player
Review: This book is a must for anyone wanting to improve his/her game. It explains the purpose behind the moves, not just variations. It is a great way to learn the ideas of opening moves. But the middle game is where this book excels. It gets into the mind of the master and goes through his/her thought processes, especially how he/she calculates and decides on a move.

I found the best way to improve your game from this book is to go through the game, covering up the masters' moves, and try to guess his moves. Write down all your thoughts and analyses you can without moving the pieces and do this until you finish the game, without looking at the comments. Only when you are done with the game, look at what Euwe wrote and compare your notes to his. You'll see yourself getting closer and closer to his analyses as you work your way through the book! You can use this method with Irving Chernev's "Logical Chess, Move by Move."

Get these two books and use this method and you will have no excuse not to be at least Expert rated!

Summary: A progessive approach
Review: This book is well structured and well done for players with few experience and theory. The first half of the book is so elementary that it is near childlike analysis. But as the reader go along the analysis get deeper and more detailed. It is constructed with richly analysed games.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Great instruction for intermediate level players
Review: This book, along with its companion `The Road to Chess Mastery ',offers splendid instruction for middle level players.Euwe understands the thinking of both the master and the amateur, and explains them beautifully. The book also gives great insights into different opening strategies.

Summary: another better book if not then this one
Review: with all due respect to the author I am giving this book 4 stars
there is a better book than this one by the same author
taht is "the road to chess mastery" in "CM V CA" he gives 25 opening and explains the strategy involved and how it was executed that is fine but the only prob with this book is
that the openings he selected here are those which are usually
not used except for by some crazy players and as surprise wepon
while in "TR T CM"he uses all well known openings taht is
Ruy Lopez,KID,Sicilian Defense,Queens gambit both accepted and declined ,grunfeld defense,NID and also minimum two variations
of each opening so here also u have a total of 25 openings
all of these are well used openings and he uses the best way to
explain and he explains like no other writer
let it be chess master vs chess amatuer or the road to chess mastery or middle game I&II or any other great book
there is no better teacher than him but if u get an option
between chess master vs chess amatuer(CM V CA) or
the road to chess mastery(TR T CM)get the latter one
if u cant find TR T CM then by all means buy this book he might
not give u the best openings but his explanations are the best
good luck
