Summary: Excellent
Review: I believe that this was an excellent collection of poems. One of my former English teachers lent it to me to read after showing her some of my poems. I was touched by most of the poems. I found them easy to realate to, as I struggle through this game called life. This magnificent collection of writings from Jewel reassured me that i wasn't the only one with "these" feelings. After reading her poems, I have found a new respect for Jewel, and for myself.

Summary: Astonishingly Awful
Review: I think it should be required that celeb-poets read a FEW renowned works of poetry before striking out on their own. While this book proves that all it takes to make a bestseller is a little cash-in-hand...it's certainly a woeful addition to the world of poetry.

Of course, to compare Jewel-the-poet to any other modern poet being published in the same forum would be outright cruel. So we must do our best to acknowledge this book's merits.

Certainly, its adolescent simplicity is drawing and the plain-language narrative probably finds a home in the hearts of an audience for whom loftier poetry is simply no fun at all. It is gawky poetry, and in that sense, is endearing. She tries, and we smile and acknowlege that much.

But poetry is about language molded, images laid out in magnificent text, and this series nowhere approaches that destination. Were this another chapbook put out by a mysterious press, or a poem on that last page of our favorite literary journal, we'd be more tolerant. As it is, having a hardcover book adorned with the author's winsome face thrust onto our beloved bookstore shelves will make us more critical...and indeed we should be. If there was every any doubt, this book proves that all the money in the world can't buy you the poet's gift.

It's hard enough for good poets to be published without pop-music celebrities stalking the coveted publishers and so I can hope Jewel feels a twinge of guilt each time she sees her book's spine resting none-too-comfortably next to the likes of Dylan Thomas, Audre Lorde, or Emily Dickinson.

Summary: It has it's good points
Review: I write poetry. And yes, I'm also a Jewel fan. But I read the book expecting alot worse. Jewel's preachiness can be a pain, her obbsession with her breasts, 'bones' and 'flesh' is tiresome, her tone can be whining, but, as a collection of poetry she speaks sincerely and with such empathy for others. A few highlights, 'Lover's for Lilly', 'Father of a deaf girl' 'PS:' 'Forgetful'. This book is not completely without merit. If you're interested go for it.

Summary: I Can Relate To Jewel's Poetry
Review: It's been a long time since I was Jewel's age but I could relate to so many of her poems. In fact, they brought back many bitter sweet memories. As I was reading "Insecurity" and got to the last few lines and read..."...the phone rings--you say hello--but I don't believe you" I couldn't help but laugh and think...'yes Jewel, I know what you mean'. Some things never change. Jewel's book of poety was a delight to read!

Summary: jewel of expression
Review: When you want to really express something you don't embellish it with creative pretense you just say it. That's what she did - straightforward emotion, life as it is. I don't know why some people think that vagueness and wordiness make a good poet. They must be of a very intellectual set to say that and thus have no understanding of poetry anyway. It's emotion and truth and that's what this nice little collection is.

Summary: A More Enlightened View of Jewel's Work
Review: Too many of the people in these reviews focus on Jewel's "talent" and "poetic ability" when really this was not her intent. These poems were meant to be an expression of her feelings, not how well she could rhyme or use iambic pentameter. They are expressions of thoughts, nothing more, and I think that this fact contributes to making her poems all the more beautiful.

Summary: Mediocre naivety.
Review: So many of the reviews posted here have either blasted or gushed over Jewel. I hope my review cannot be described as either. Jewel generally writes mediocre poetry. I write poetry myself and I wouldn't pretend that it is the most talented work out there. She can't seem to write any better than I do...which is just not good enough for a published "poet". I agree with the reviewer who asked of those who described A Night without Armor as "the best book of poetry ever" - What they were comparing it to! No one can be so naive as to believe that her publisher didn't think her musical success wouldn't also translate to literary success. If literary is the word. Regardless of the quality of the poetry, the book would never have been a failure.

Summary: Sad, very sad.
Review: I am not writing this review to demean Jewel. I don't believe this work is entirely without talent, but it does not deserve to be the bestseller that it was. My main issue with this book is that some true poet with geniune talent probably got bumped so this could ride a popularity wave to bestselling status. That is what makes me a little upset. I have known a couple of amazing poets that do everything to get their work even looked at by a publishing company, LOOKED at, mind you, being published is something else altogether. I have to be on the side of the many wonderful struggling poets and feel ashamed of another celebrity using their status as a springboard into somewhere they have no business being.

Summary: Jewel is Awesome!
Review: This book is so great! I can totally relate with Jewel on SO many topics. She is such a great singer and poet! Teachers should totally let us read this book instead of Shakespeare or like, Robert Frost (they are sooo boring!). Jewel's poetry speaks from the heart. If people would just accept her art for what it is, then we could completely learn a lot from it. :)

Summary: Jewel:A Night Without Armor
Review: The poetry was great. It was so inspiring to go out and live your life the best you can. I couldn't put it down, I stay up crying and laughing at the same time all night.
