Rating: Summary: No hype. No celebrity. Just Jewel. The Poet. Review: If Jewel ever rode a horse, it must have been Pegasus. For this work, her first collection of poems, is an inspired achievement of extraordinary artistry which repays close and frequent reading. Nothing like this has ever been written before. Beneath a self-deprecating, ironic parody of the immature or "high school" style, Jewel manages to light upon the most universal truths of our existence in language that is inspired, elegant, and elevated. Even a cursory reading of these exquisite, painstakingly crafted poems reveals a breathtaking command of poetic technique ordinarily attained only by those who have devoted whole lifetimes to the art of poetry. And her poetic voice is unique, uncompromising, distinctive. Bold and striking diction cast in complex, yet seemingly superficial verse greets the reader at every turn. Jewel illuminates the most subtle mysteries of the human condition in language that is filled with humor, pathos and wit. These are the chosen weapons of her armorless Knight. In short, it is simply astonishing that a woman so young has created a polished work so richly complex, so carefully nuanced, so mature. Jewel is not an easy read; multiple levels of meaning and novel, occasionally obscure references will doubtless present a formidable challenge to the most determined reader. And yet, even as I continue to savor each precious gem from this exotic treasury, I eagerly anticipate her next effort. Sappho, we are told by the Greeks, was the tenth muse. Is there room for an eleventh?
Rating: Summary: THE BEST POETRY BOOK I'VE EVER READ Review: Jewel has a very good sense of beauty. She uses words as if they were the wind, using them beautifully. She is the best in many things. Her songs are beautiful but her poetry is even better. I've read some of the critics in here, if you really think that this is high school poetry, you may be very true but it does not change the beautifulness of her words. I write poetry myself and I love this book, I really do. Well done, Jewel
Rating: Summary: WOW -- I'M TERRIBLY NAUSEATED Review: I haven't quite read all of the book, but from the majority of the poems I have read, I conclude that it sucks. The line breaks are arbitrary, the subject matter is way too autobiographical . . .Come on. "OGLING MY BREASTS"? "I hope her breasts were admired as mine are..." Jesus. This is terrible. Somebody do something. Jewel, write a movie, write a song, write a classic romance novel, I don't care, but PLEASE don't write poetry. Thank you.
Rating: Summary: A BOOK FOR THE TOILET Review: First of all, let me qualify my response by saying I have only read 4 or 5 of the poems. I will however, comment on the those. It is obvious, to me, that Jewel has some serious issues with her breasts. She writes of men "ogling" her breasts, and how she hopes her grandmother's breasts were "as admired as mine are/two silver deities/two shining steeples/giving testament to the sky. Who is this woman? Ok. This book certainly took guts to write. I respect Jewel for attempting to pour her soul into her poetry and to touch the hearts of her readers. However, she failed, at least in my case. I think the 5 poems I've read are extremely shallow. I also think that they would sound much better if they were just parts of an autobiography. Why can't she just tell us about her life in an autobiography, instead of subjecting us to the flimsy, even comical lines of her poem. That brings me to another point. She really didn't use her line breaks too well. They appear to be "chosen at random" in the words of my writing professor. I completely agree with him when he says that this stuff is crappy. I do appreciate it for its comic value, however, and I'm thinking of beginning a compilation of poems that spoof other "serious" poets, like Jewel. It's obvious that the main goal of this book was to sell copies. after all, who wouldn't want a book of poems by a famous, good-looking, popular-among-teenage-girls artist? Me.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: This audio cd is spoken by Jewel and allows her to capture the very meaning and feelings behind the poems. If your a fan of Jewel's this is a must have.
Rating: Summary: Where's the 0 stars? Review: The only people who like this book are the people who liked her music in the first place. I ended up giving it to my boyfriend, who was a fanof hers. He loved it (no kidding). As a person, who is NOT one of her followers, I think it stinks. Stick to music, Jewel!

Rating: Summary: JEWEL EXPOSES KIDS TO POETRY Review: even though I feel uncomfortable with the fact that far superior writers aren't given such lucrative book deals, what Jewel has done is expose many kids to poetry. I think this is good, because hopefully her fans will get ideas in their heads to possibly write their own manuscripts or just begin exploring where poetry can go (maybe read the poems of someone who isn't a rock star or something).
Rating: Summary: The Greatest book of poetry I have ever read!!! Review: I was reading through some comments and I thought most of them were pretty rude. Jewel is a good writer and singer.I think that A Night without Armor has some of the best imagery. She has the best similes and metaphors I have ever heard of.
Rating: Summary: Run, Run, Run. . .far away from this book Review: Jewel's poetry is some of the most vomit-inducing drivel I'veever read! Most of the poems were junior high style. I just don'tthink this woman understands what poetry is! If you think this book was a great piece of literary art, than you must start reading more literature, this certainly wasn't it. There are FAR better women writers who achieve less fame. Read something else, anything is better than this.
