Rating: Summary: Cool. Review: My best friend has this book and I took the chance to read most of the poems in it. Some of them really made sense and hit home, others, well, weren't so good. But no one, including Jewel, can be perfect and great all the time. So give the girl a break if you didn't like her poetry. Also I noticed that some of the reviews submitted by other readers for her book were rather prejudiced. One review remarked,"typical of high school students." I bet this person was in high school once too. (And just for the record, Jewel isn't in high school anymore.) I also noticed teenagers seemed to like the book, but adult mainly said it was horrible. The lovely generation gap makes its existance known again. Jewel wrote this book of poetry from her soul and her experiences. I do have to say, though, that I believe she should stick to acting and music though, since she is more capable in those aspects then she is in poetry. I also must say that I admire her as a guitarist, as I also play guitar and piano and realise how gifted she is as a musician.
Rating: Summary: I was a sceptic at first but I believe she has talent. Review: I am not a teenage girl and not a big fan of her music, but after I opened Jewel's book in the store and read "Grimshaw" and "Tai Pei 2", I had to get it. Most young poets, if they are girls, write about how they hate men and how their bodies are exploited. If they are guys, they write about their mother, all the girls that have rejected them, and their male body part. Jewel's poems are not all angst-ridden diary entries as some reviewers have suggested. Many times she steps outside of her own emotional experience and describes; with a simple, deft image, the scenery in front of her and how it becomes a metaphor for a larger, more revelatory experience. She also seems to have a natural instinct for choosing word combinations to create a certain texture and cadence that give each poem a personality of its own. These are rare talents for anyone, much less someone as young as Jewel. The poems that some say are incomplete or mere prose I find to be complete in their stillness and clarity; like the Asian aesthetic for poetry. The critics from the poetry elite don't seem to want to give Jewel her due and use her pop culture status, her beauty, and her teenage-girl appeal as proof that she shouldn't be taken seriously. I think it's proof that she should.
Rating: Summary: Give this girl a break Review: As an Alaska-lite, I feel that until you have lived in this town of beauty and extraordinary sentiment, you need to understand that there are things like poerty and literature that inspire free expression and insight that are related to our own life experiences. For those who cannot relate to Jewel's depth of emotion, you really need to visit the great state to understand more. I give Jewel credit for putting Alaska on the map. If this book gives younger readers a taste for poetry, then all's well that ends well.
Rating: Summary: Jewel: Queen of the hollow verse Review: I've read the book several times and while analyzing it, I've come to the conclusion that she has no developing voice. All attempts of originality have failed. Using the lower case "i" by itself and craming words, "nothingnotmuch..." is an imitation of e.e. cummings. Also her radical line breaks resemble those of Octavio Paz. The themes in her book are elementary, they're about love, pain, etc.... Also in her introduction she forgot to credit Jim Morrison, who was also a major contributor in "forging the bridge from poetry to music." It is easy to derail jewel because she isn't an academic poet. The literary world hasn't taken her in. The ones who like this book are mostly her music fans, which was the intended target.
Rating: Summary: sad Review: I feel nothing but sadness when I read over the reviews written by Jewel's adoring adolescent fans. Is this what our world is coming to? These uneducated, star-struck little morons claiming that Jewel's is the best poetry they have ever read. It can't be much of a competition. I have nothing against Jewel wishing to share her innermost feelings with the entire world, but I do object to her calling it poetry, which is an art that I truly adore. For the children who claim to be touched by Jewel--look further. A damaged individual is hardly the inspiration you need to grasp life with a passion.
Rating: Summary: Not as good as Yeats Review: Jewel is like a ghost in a dream. Her works speak to the ephemeral hart of the soul. Some crued spirits seem willing to suggest that her works are not tip top literature but, so what! All that matters of poetry is that it touches the heart and speaks to the soul, and that is what Jewel does in spades. Still, she is not as good as Yeats.
Rating: Summary: Poetry to me is not just good form Review: Jewel's poems may not have as good as form as other poets' but her thoughts seem pure and true. She does not hide meanings in complex metaphores, she instead uses simple way of telling the reader what she feels. This gives her poetry a very innocent feel. Her poetry to me is an excelent example of thought communication. I would recommend that everyone read atleast a little of Jewel's book and try to get the feel of her poetry. I think that her book is one of those book s that you have to read a few times to really appreciate.
Rating: Summary: Deeply touching ! Review: This is an awesome work by this great and sensitive American artist . I loved Jewel's poems and I could relate a lot to them . This is a book to read aloud , in the middle of the night , by the fire , with friends or by yourself ... It's a book to be felt deep inside !
Rating: Summary: This is a must-not read!!! Review: There are many more poets--men and female--who deserve a chance to display their poetry, and yet Jewel seems to put this book out--which is horrible--just because of who she is. Now, I don't read much poetry, and I'm not going to claim I'm an expert, but her poems didn't do anything for me. I could write better than that, and I don't write. I think the people who dedicate a lot of time into writing good poetry should be recognized.
Rating: Summary: Search on!!!!!! Review: Good for jewel to print her poems. She is a sex kitten. And she is opening doors for other poets to be read. So I say if you want the real deal go read EE Cummings "100 Poems" Leonard Cohen "Stranger Music" Aurthur Rimbaud "A season in Hell" Jack Gilbert "The Great Fires" Jeff Markey "Caged" Open your eyes to these poets and you will not be let down.
