Rating: Summary: Art is perception, Poetry is expression Review: I am a fan of both Jewels music and her poetry. Her poetry, though no Emerson or Shakespeare is not meant to be these things. It is meant I believe to be a little bit of humanity mixed with a little bit of the world with just a touch of sarcasm and blunt honesty here and there. Jewel is not a poet any more than the average person and I believe that is what makes her so compelling. She has a fresh, unique, unreadable completely personal book here that not all will enjoy but which I believe to be a respectable triumph. Are there any other poetry books currently on the New York times best seller list? Has there been recently, or at least one that has got as much exposure as this. If nothing else Jewel is bringing poetry back into the main stream and making it tangible to those who would not normally read or understand it. This collection may not be the greatest prose ever written. I don't believe however that was the goal. It is an honost, profound look at todays culture and the views and past of a young woman. I recommend it.
Rating: Summary: "There 'poems' are bad I know, but they're her own"! Review: What can you expect from the genious that brought you the touching lyrics "These hands are small I know but they're not yours they are my own"? What you get in this book is how shallow and conceited this superstar is. What you don't get is poetry.
Rating: Summary: Jewel's poetry is amazing!!!!! Review: I have purchased and read Jewel's "A Night Without Armor," and I feel that this book is amazing. She has been a great inspiration on me. I think that people are being way to harsh on Jewel. Maybe everyone should try to understand that she is writing from her heart. She isn't really trying to be as wonderful as you all want her to be. Jewel Kilcher writes from the heart and that is one of the MANY reasons she is my favorite artist and poet.
Rating: Summary: On Jewel Review: I was going to be available in stores too,/ I was going to drink whiskey and smoke dope/ Like other kids my age,/ Like kids younger I was going to rageAt the pigs in Alaska and the parents who raised me,/ The teachers and the soccer moms and absent fathers working too long./ I was going write poems and be famous,/ I was going far in my bejeweled white skin/ That burned if I were too long in the sun/ And at high altitudes,/ I was going to send emails to all my friends/ And feel things others felt and explain/ In lines of poetry about how these/ Things were so very true,/ I was going to wear sparkling clothing/ I was going to read to crowds of people/ And have them applaud me,/ I was going to too.
Rating: Summary: If you think this book is poetry it's a sad day. Review: I'm serious. Any serious poet or reader of poetry knows this. After reading quality poetry for years I was unfortunate enough to encouter this book. This book is filled with short cliches, familiar lines, indecent subjects, and a shallow approach to all of them. This surely is not what poetry is about. Jewel should do us all a favor and keep her horrible attempts at real poetry away from the shelves. And you as a reader, don't fall into the superstar trap of buying a bad product because you like the songwriter. This book provides no depth into anything, and furthermore it provides no poetry!
Rating: Summary: Poetry- this is not. Review: Since I liked her misc, I tried really hard to like this book. The truth is that she kept me from doing so. She deals with inappropriate subjects, she can't write in prose, her poetry is force. The list of why this book is trash goes on and on. There is no true honesty in her work. She makes herself out to be a goodess among men because of her breasts. I found it ofensive that people would dare call these crude pieces of random words deep poetry. Trust me when I say that the deeper meanings if her poems are even more shallow than she is.
Rating: Summary: Jewel thinks we are shallow? Review: I was offended by a comment that Jewel made in a recen interview. She said that people who didn't like her poetry were shallow. Well, I thought that manybe I could overlook her horrible poems before and still try to listen to her new album. The truth is that every writer knows to take criticism lightly and to stand by one's work. Jewel's comment was not only unprofessional, but it makes her out to be even more aloof. As for this book, it truly is dreadful, take it from someone who studies this for a living.
Rating: Summary: WOW!!!!!!!..... This is really, really bad Review: When I borrowed my friend's copy of A night Without Armor, I nearly had a heart-attack. This stuff is really bad. I really tried to like it, but I just can't. Jewel (even her name is obnoxious) has a mediocre voice and an angle. People are comparing this shallow, conceited BRAT to Joni Mitchell, one of the greatest singers of our time. (And I'm a sophmore in high school, so don't tell me that only adults havethe sense to hate this junk!!) I mean, someone who writes whole poems about her breasts is really, really sad. Jewel (I hate even saying her name) is the lowest point of American society, even past The Jerry Springer Show. (Today's topic - Famous people who stink so bady we feel we may kill ourselves!) I beg you, do not even borrow this piece of junk from the library! And if one more person says that Jewel's poems are only understandable to deep, intelligent, dreamy people, (And I read a TON of poetry), up you nose with a rubber HOSE! Hey, your hero Jewel could write a poem about that (there is a hose slammed up my nose, and it makes me feel like a rose, who knows, boy I really do bite!!!!)
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Review: I really don't understand why people are trashing this book. Her poetry was not intended to be ejoyed by everyone. Her poetry is just her. Those who want to understand Jewel better and see what kind of person she is should read this book. I, for one, enjoyed this book cause I got to see exactly what kind of person Jewel is!
Rating: Summary: There's no poetry here! Review: I was outraged after reading Jewe's book. I was looking forward to this book, after enjoying her first album. I was so disappointed that she turned out to be so shallow! Her work isn't even poetry. I feel like I got ripped off. I read a lot of poetry and I'm telling you, this isn't anything like real poetry. Please don't support this kind of garbage. This book is just another example of how superstars try to make a quick buck.
