Rating: Summary: well done Review: I enjoyed Jewels poetry, it was really a delight to read. She has a wonderful soul as shown through her writing and I encourage her to continue.
Rating: Summary: Spoken from the Heart Review: One of the things I like most about Jewel's music and poetry is the feeling of honesty in the words. Anyone who reveals so much of themselves in their art is going to be attacked. Sad but true. I personally believe that Jewel is to be applauded for putting so much of herself on the line. Speaking as a poet myself, I believe the most important thing is that you say what your feel not whether your poetry rhymes or contains allusions to breasts are whatever. Yes I will confess that there is better written poetry around (Poe, Kerouac, Blake, Bukowski etc) but then so what? I read poetry for the emotion not for the writing.
Rating: Summary: absolutely beautiful, and inspiring Review: It was beautiful. I absolutely loved it. Jewel has inspired me so much with her wonderful works of art. She has taught me to strive for the best, no matter what. I couldn't put the book down for a few seconds. And I have read it numerous times. I have recommended it to many of my friends, who have all enjoyed her work and have felt inspired by her work.
Rating: Summary: Through the eyes of a young writer Review: As a younger writer, reading Jewel's book of poems allowed me to compare my work with that of a more professional, distinguished poet. It opened my eyes to deeper expression and honesty of experiences. It seemed that she didn't hold back any emotions in her poems, which is why I enjoyed the collection so much. It was as though she just let herself go and everything she was thinking and feeling was relayed with such pure and unique expression that perfectly fell into words and onto paper. I loved her poetry and reading the book has given me higher expectations for myself as I mature as a writer.
Rating: Summary: An Underwhelming Achievement Review: What can one expect from an artist whose lyrics include insipid couplets like "Got my eggs, and my pancakes too/Got my maple syrup, everything but you"...This girls got talent!
Rating: Summary: This was an amazing book! I could not put it down! Review: As a poet myself, I know what good and bad poetry is. "A Night Without Armor" is incredible poetry. Jewel has shined on her music and her songwriting, and it seems she has another gift, writing poetry. This is one of the most beautiful novels I have ever read. It tells stories if love, hate, and the love and pride for one's homeland. Jewel has done well with this novel, and I look forward to future work from her, WAY TO GO JEWEL!
Rating: Summary: it's not fair Review: I liked the book, don't get me wrong. I just know how hard it is to get poetry published and I don't think this book would have ever had a chance of being published if it were not for Jewel's celebrity status. It's not that it was bad, it's just that I could have saved the money it took to buy it and just read any high schooler's diary. I think there are a lot of really good poets out there that deserve the chance to be published and I just don't think it's fair that people would publish lesser work just because of someone's fame.
Rating: Summary: Feel the words;don't just read them. Review: As I writer of poetry myself, I found it to be very inspirational. I finished the very night I received it. Jewel's poems come from her heart and not her head, that's where it should be from. It's hard to say that a poet's work is not good, because readers pick it apart and analyze it. Poetry is not to be analyzed because no one can know what the writer was going through at the time of writing the poem. Jewel writes her poetry with truth and a poem without truth would not be a poem. This is a wonderful book, although, I understand it's not for everybody, but if you like poetry; Jewel's is very easy to relate to. Sit down and listen to her music and read the book. Feel the words; don't just READ them.
Rating: Summary: A night without grammar Review: Probably my favorite backhanded compliment of all time is in the Amazon.com review above: "Jewel's book of poetry is solid by celeb-poet standards." When that's the highest praise available, a negative review of this silly book seems redundant.
Rating: Summary: GROSS! Review: I can't believe they don't let you put zero stars on this thing. I thought this book was the most horrible and repulsive book I've ever read! I don't mind her music, it's okay, but this book, ugh, I can't even find words horrible enough to describe it. I got the book for a gift. I thought okay I'll read a poem and if I don't like it, I'll take it back. I read one poem and threw the book in the garbage. It was to bad to go back in the store. If some people like it I don't mind but I hated it.
