Rating: Summary: This should be mandatory reading for all musician's Review: After reading many other music business books I wasn't sure what else I could possibly learn from yet another book about the business. I found that there was not only a lot more to be learned but that I also gained a deeper understanging of topics that I had already known about. The Musician's Handbook does an excellent job of walking the reader through all the major points a beginning band or musician will encounter on their way to a successful career. I liked that it was written by a REAL musician who had walked down these roads and REALLY experienced the situations that that books goes into detail discussing. Other books seemed to give general overviews on topics like touring and merchandising; whereas the Musician's Handbook shed light on these topics which are in fact very big points of concern for a band. I've told all of my musician friends that they MUST read this book. I would say the same thing to anyone else who has, like myself, read many other books on the music business. There is a TON of really usefull information in the Musician's Handbook!

Rating: Summary: A fantastic resource! Review: As a music manager who enjoys reading the works of others to understand a variety of perspectives on different music business oriented issues, when Bobby told me he was coming out with a book to help musicians, I knew, it had to be something special.I have read just about every book available regarding the music business and I tell you, any musician who wants to learn the real deal behind being not only a better musician, but a better business man in this industry had better pick up this book. The book is very well crafted and contains guidance from a man we all admire and respect, who's done it, time and again. If you enjoy books written by authors such as Moses Avalon and Don Passman, you will find The Musician's Handbook an invaluable resource. I can't personally say enough other than, get the book, and get further in your career because of it.
Rating: Summary: It's About Time... Review: Being an avid music fan, I have read most of the music industry books out there. The problem was however, that none of the books were written by a professional musician - someone who is actually out there doing what's being written about. Bobby Borg, an amazing drummer, has written the ultimate music industry book - he's been out there, and he know's what's REALLY going on!! The Musicians Handbook is an amazing read - great stories, excellent examples of the financial areas of music, and very cool interviews with the best in the biz...it has it all!! You don't have to be in the music business to appreciate The Musician's Handbook - even if you are simply a casual music fan, you will find this book fascinating! The Musician's Handbook is a MUST for any person thinking of music as a career, any person interested in the business, or any person who is a music fan! This is required reading!
Rating: Summary: Experience and writing Review: Besides time with Warrant and Beggars & Thieves as well as his own band Left for Dead, Borg has a long history writing music magazine columns and method books. In this book, Borg unites his experience in working bands with his journalistic experience for an informative and detailed text on the mechanics of the music business. Along with bandmates, a musician needs a more extensive team to navigate the practical matters of a career in music. Borg details the roles of the attorney, personal manager, business manager, talent agent and record producer in this team. Borg also goes far to explain the perennially mystifying topic of royalties, advances and music publishing in the complex revenue stream generated by songs and recordings. Borg also explores different employment scenarios, like contract versus self-employment as well the approach of being a solo artist/employer. These helpful chapters are unusual in books of this type. Sections of the book are enhanced with Q&A interviews with such people as Henry Rollins, Fred Croshal (GM at Maverick Records) and Neil Gillis (VP of A&R at Warner/Chappel Music).
Rating: Summary: Must have ! Carry it with you everywhere you go Review: Bobby Borg's book is a MUST HAVE! It's easy to read and he divides the book up in a way that you can skip around for quick references. I carry this book with me everywhere!!! His book is really a collection of facts that all artists need to know. Even if you are not an artist (exe upcoming manager) you still need to read this book. This is a step by step, no nonsense, straightforward understanding of every area in the music industry.
Rating: Summary: Carry A Tune And Carry This Tome Review: Bobby Borg's book, The Musicians Handbook: A Practical Guide to Understanding the Music Business, screams at you with logic and confidence. Unlike your parents' advice of having something to fall back on if the music doesnt pan out; Bobby is your encouraging uncle who says "you can do it, just watch your ass and listen up". Pointers, suggestions, annectdotes, and accolades. Bobby put it all down in a book that any musician (even drummers) can understand and reference. A recognizable face or song and no money in your wallet is a sad fate. This one book can replace that shelf of manuals written for lawyers and suits. Be a musician, but act like a pro. Carry a tune and carry this tome. -Pesci (Gany-Made Music Pitching) / (Performer)
