Rating: Summary: I loved it! Review: I really enjoyed this book because it wasn't like any other book I've seen. There are pictures everywhere that illustrate the articles fully. The stories are about the more obscure stars and TV shows and I like that since I've read a lot of books about classic television. Standouts are the article on Bette Davis' TV career, Playboy After Dark, the murder of TV's Superman and a profile of my favorite show growing up, It's About Time! I had totally forgotten about it. And now I know why there are no more local children's shows. That's the cool thing about this book, it reminds you of things you hadn't thought about in a long time and then gives you the behind the scenes story. It's also funny as hell, every once in a while you'll just burst out laughing! I also like how people mentioned in the first part of the book are referred to again at the end. The CD-Rom is kind of weird. There are short films with cut-ins of some of the odder stuff in the book. The book had me going back to the CD and the CD had me going back to the book. I highly reccommend TVparty Television's Untold Tales for anyone who loves classic TV but be warned, it's pretty cynical.
Rating: Summary: A fantastic read! Review: TV Party is a great book with little-known information that would appeal to anyone who loves TV or knows anything about the medium of television. It has wonderful pictures and a compelling format that intrigues the reader. It is hard to put it down until you see what the next story contains. TV Party contains pictures and accounts that I've never seen before as well as items that bring back fond memories of my own experience with television. It also gives a new perspective of shows and people that I already knew about. I was surprised that with each memory, I turned the page and another story was there about something else I remembered from my early days of watching television. This book is a delightful and well-documented history of television and how it has impacted all of us in society. I would highly recommend it to anyone!
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: I was very disappointed by this book. I can only say that this book was shallow at best and a complete waste of time at worse. The many stories in the book are unrelated to television and one must ask why this book was published under such false pretenses. If false advertising is a crime, this book would certainly merit a felony conviction for duping its audience.
Rating: Summary: What happened? Review: Did you ever see the hype some movies generate and go expecting a blockbuster but end up leaving the theater disappointed and let down? That's pretty much how I felt after reading TVparty. I really wanted to like the book and tried my best to see the silver lining in the cloud, but the more I read and looked, the darker the cloud became. The book is a gigantic joke filled with tidbits of old stories unrelated to the topic at hand...television. If you are looking for a genuine book regarding television, try Joe Garner's "Stay Tuned". Not only is his book heads and shoulders above TVparty, it has an excellent DVD/CD combo with excerpts of landmark television episodes which is a far cry from the cheap and scant content of the TVparty CD, which is, in a word, a scam. It's very rare that I buy a book so terrible, but TVparty suckered me. My fault. I should have believed the other reviews. Oh, well. I can always use the book as a doorstop.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: This is an interesting book that reads like a full-length zine. The reason why it feels this way is that some of the essays are reprints (or extensions) of essays already published online on www.tvparty.com. Therefore, if you're familiar with the site (especially from the days when most of the content was free), you'll have a general sense of déjà vu. Also, people most likely to enjoy this book are baby boomers, the 35-to-60-year-old crowd. Most of the essays pertain to TV shows produced over 30 years ago. Children of the 80s or the 90s probably won't like this book, because of lack of familiarity with the material. This said, retro pop culture freaks will enjoy this book... provided they don't already visit tvparty.com on a regular basis. It's a great read for the nostalgics whose favorite TV channels include GSN (the former Game Show Network) and TVLand.
Rating: Summary: This was a surprise Review: I browsed this book at a friend's house and bought it the next day. This is not a book for people who want to read the same-old same-old. And I don't! A lot of this is esoteric stuff. The first TV couple in bed together? Weird local kid shows from the 60s, stories I hadn't heard about shows I saw once as a kid then never saw again, like It's About Time, The Green Hornet and Mr. Terrific! And now I find out TV's Superman was murdered? Wonderful!
Rating: Summary: TVparty: Television's Untold Tales Review: WOW!!! Excellent look at the strange reality of television. I was especially impressed with the formatting an photo choices and placement. Mr. Counts gets two thumbs up. Witty and true.
Rating: Summary: It's the website . . . in a convenient portable size Review: If you like Billy's website, you will definately like this book. Clear, concise articles about many aspects of early (1940s to 1970s) televison, with many photos. Like old commercials? Kid's programs? Game shows? You got 'em right here. The CD-Rom is an added bonus that adds to the enjoyment of this entire package. Billy, you did good!
