Rating: Summary: Great book for trips Review: I travel quite a bit and I loved this book. I could stop and start without losing my place. Flop on the motel bed and open it up. It's great plane reading and people start conversations when they see something they recognize. I didn't know there were so many kids shows out there but everyone watched them it seems. The wrestling bit was pretty interesting because it didn't editorialize about fake vs real. It just told the story. I lost the CD immediately so I don't know if it was worth anything. The writer is funny and easy to read. He doesn't overdo the stories. It's a quick read and then he moves on. It reads like a web page without the eye strain. I wish he had covered more games shows but that could be an entire book itself. It has assumed an honored place on my "throne" now. It's not Dickens but it's fun to read.
Rating: Summary: Oh great! Review: TVparty! is definitely my kind of book! From front to back, I liked the fresh attitude and the depth of knowledge. These were stories about the early days of TV that I didn't know. And any book that has Brett Somers and Paul Lynde is well OK with me. I also liked the mysteries like the Death of George Reeves and what happened to all those sitcom houses. Captain Kangaroo! Winky Dink! This is television obscura, groovy too!
Rating: Summary: Don't waste your money on time Review: There are very few books that I have purchased in which I have felt swindled. TV Party has come as close as you come to this. In short, while the book is visually appealing, that is as deep as the book gets. Paying twenty dollars for one or two interesting stories is not my idea of a book that delivers. Whether you are a nostagia hound or not, it would be best if you passed on this book. If you still want to try it out, make sure that you can get your money back before you make the purchase!
Rating: Summary: High expectations - low delivery Review: When a book is read, you either like it or don't. The high energy rate of people fighting over the issue of whether this book is "AWESOME", "THE BEST" or other hyperbole is besides the point. Obviously, some people feel that if they like it, then YOU HAVE TO LIKE IT too. On the flip side, those who didn't like the book should take note likewise...to each his/her own. All I can say about TV Party is that I didn't like it one bit. It promises so much but delivers so little. I suppose that people who are desperate for nostalgia will like TV Party even if it was poorly done, which it is. The book has nothing to do with my personal tastes of how the book should have been written. My major complaint is what it promises and how it fails to deliver. The stories in the book are rubbish and are tabloid in nature. It ISN'T fun reading. Personally, I don't care how glowingly this book is reviewed here. I can only say that after reading TV Party, that it was no party at all.
Rating: Summary: Not your mother's tv book Review: What can I say? I recently got this book in the mail and was totally underwhelmed by it. I really can't understand all the fuss about this book being the greatest since sliced bread. I feel as if I have been swindled. The book looked so great. The cover has nice pictures on it and there is even a CD that comes with the book. How could I lose? I lost big time. Maybe you have to be over 40 years old to enjoy this book? I certainly didn't. ... the book has nothing to offer in regards to the "untold tales". The book promises more than it delivers. It is neither a trivia book or a book that uncovers "secrets". A few articles are interesting...
Rating: Summary: Fair but no cigar Review: It is interesting to note the wide canyon of opinion here about this book. I guess it is a love it or leave it sort of book. Regardless, TV Party does not deliver as promised. It is a fair book, but it in no way is a fantastic book about the golden/silver era of television. The author hangs most of the weight of the book on several key stories revolving around certain tv personalities while the rest of the book is just filler. I would have to agree that there is a lot of info here that is not mainstream. However, this is not a strength of the book as much as it shows that the author used these items to just fill a book that was already weak in nature. I would rate this book a 2 1/2 star book mainly because the book and CD are not as entertaining as it could have been.
Rating: Summary: It's no party Review: All I can say about "TV Party" is that it isn't. It's not "your father's trivia book", is a correct statement made by someone here. But then again, neither is this book entertaining nor informative. Some would argue that they like the inane and esoteric in this book. However, this is a poor excuse for a book that misses the mark in promising it's readers "inside" stories. Much of it is drivel. I had high hopes for this book. Maybe the next book will be better. If the author is reading this review, please, please do not rip people off by enticing your customers with a CD that promises so much but has so little to offer.
Rating: Summary: The book I've been waiting for... Review: I have been a fan of the TVparty website for many years and have seen it grow from being a cult collection of insider articles and film clips on the web to being a source I constantly see being referred to on television. I have to admit, tho, nothing prepared me for the book! I am thrilled to finally have something to show my friends who aren't on the web, and it has kept me entertained since Christmas on the train (and I have read it through easily more than once!) I only watched the CD this week, tho, and I was screaming with laughter at the model with radioactive material on her face, and the obnoxious 60s children... it is my sister's birthday coming up and I can't wait to give it to her! You will not be disappointed in this book!!!
Rating: Summary: So Not Typical! Review: TVPARTY! is the ultimate bedside companion, a book you'll pick up and read a little or a lot, and still come away satisfied. OK. This book is different. It doesn't try to be the last word on anything. If anything, TVPARTY! left me with the feeling that I want to know more. Now I'm reading a book on Tallulah Bankhead now because I laughed so hard at the article in this book. Where this book REALLY got me was in the article on 'Read All About It' - a show we watched in high school on the school TVs! Now that's obscure! In addition, my family used to vacation in North Carolina and I remember watching The Old Rebel Show - and here it was in the TVPARTY! book. Now that's cool. Like others have said, this thing is like a party, with voices coming from all different directions. I'll be watching for another TVPARTY! book, I hope it comes soon.
Rating: Summary: A mass marketing trick? Review: I finished reading TV Party and I have read the reviews here. I am inclined to think that the ragingingly positive reviews of the book are sorely in error. Are these reviews marketing ploys to sell the book? Sorry for being so cynical, but the reviews do not reflect, at least in my opinion, what type of book this is. A perfect score of 5 is just too hard to imagine, even for those who really do like this book. I thought the book was very shallow. There are a few bright shining stories in there regarding Soupy Sales, Alfalfa from the old movie serials, and George Reeves of the original Superman tv show. The rest of the book, as others have pointed out, cover old tv shows for children and lots of stories on obscure tv characters. There was not a whole lot of entertaining info on the classic tv shows as I had hoped for. The information that is in the book is slow and ploddingly boring. This has been said several times, but I must agree, that the accompanying CD is extremely limited in information or entertainment value. Anyone who views this CD, whether or not they are a fan of TV party must concur that the CD fails to contain anything of real value for the consumer. This is why I am suspicious of the extremely glowing reports on this book here. I feel that the advertisements for this book are very misleading as the information promised does not come through.
