Summary: Very Nice Histroy of U2s Spiritual Music.
Review: I have been a U2 fan since around 81 and I noticed the Biblical references and concepts floating around in there songs right away. I though, wow finally a secular group writing some spiritual songs. I listened to a lot of Christian Contemporary Music back in those days, and I felt it was geared for the believer, and was not reaching others. But, U2 was and is cool and they were saying the spiritual things in a cool way, much like the Apostle Paul did back in the Acts.... He would learn how to deliver the gospel message in the language and symbols of each people he was dealing with. I think U2 and Bono have done more to spread the Gospel then all the "Christian" artists combined. U2 is delivering the positive message in our vernacular of Today. Steve Stockman does a nice job covering the history of U2's uses of spiritual references in there songs. The book is well written and riveting. He also outlines there personal spiritual journeys, How and where U2 (3 members) found God, why and how they change the act but still maintained the message, and how they are still relevant today. U2 is probably the most impotent massage band in rock history and its great to have a book like this to delve into there thinking. This is a must read for anyone interested in U2's spiritual songs.

Summary: Solid Read, got a little annoying...
Review: This is a well written book by the author Stockman, an impressive piece of work that deserves to be read. I just feel he put too much opinion into the book and so it becomes more about Christianity sometimes than U2. At one point, there was 3 or 4 pages straight where U2 wasn't even mentioned and I just put the book down...man, I just want to read about those guys from Ireland.

As U2 are my favorite band, I feel their lyrics are filled with relegious and spiritual messages and these two aspects are essential to their music. But you have to realize their so highly-acclaimed because they've been able to change their style of music on basically every album and stay popular for over 20 years. So I got this feeling the author was a devoted U2 fan for the early years (Boy, War, especially October) and he's trying to prove in the book that even though U2 experimented with different kinds of music, every song had to have some kind of special religious message in it. "Elevation" is a great, simple rock song, I don't feel there is hidden message to God in it. I think when Bono came out dressed like a devil during the ZOOTV tour, he was being unique as usual, so I don't want to read a whole chapter about how by dressing up like the devil he can rebel against him. And name one male u2 fan who thinks "With or Without You" (my favorite song of all time) is not a love song about a woman. Well, the author tries to tie the religious message into that too. The members of U2 are Christians (except Adam; I felt it was kind of wierd when he was mentioned only twice the whole book), I think that it's great they proclaim their faith through their music. But not EVERY song is about their faith. Face it, they also drink a hell of a lot, smoke, love making money, and are humble yet ego-driven rock stars....which is essential for one of the best rock bands of all time.

I love U2's early music that deals with aspects of Christianity (Joshua Tree is my favorite album after Achtung Baby) and the spirituality that evolves around it (i.e. "The First Time" on Zooropa is amazing). I just wanted more U2 band information. I don't mean to bash the book, it was a good read and I think if you're a U2 fan, you should check it out.

Summary: Incredible book that journeys into the heart of U2!
Review: Walk On was an absolutely fascinating read! In fact, it was so good I'm going to read it again. I have been a distant fan of U2 since my early teens (I'm 30 now). By "distant" I just mean that I haven't followed their life and music as closely as some fans have (at least not too far beyond their earlier albums). I did purchase a copy of "All That You Can't Leave Behind" and I think it is now probably one of my favorites (along with October, The Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree)!

I have always found some inspiration in the life and music of U2. Such a statement bothers some Christians and that is precisely why they need to read this book. One of the things I have always most admired about these guys is that they are real and they often wear their hearts right out on their sleeves... There are some very deep, inspiring, contemplative, introspective and sometimes questioning themes that flow consistently through the lyrics of U2's songs. In fact, I don't know of one album that U2 has released that didn't express some facet of spirituality in one way or another.

"Walk On: The Spiritual Journey of U2" presents an intimate look into the lives of a group of true believers who are not playing games with anyone. They don't make excuses for their imperfections or try to cover up their frustration with the condition of the world and how few, especially ...Most Christians who can't get past the sight of a cigarette, a beer or the sound of a cuss word, will have trouble seeing the honest heart of a guy like Bono who is as sincere and devout as they come!...Bono once made the statement in an interview that the reason he is attracted to the Scriptures and figures like Christ is because he is not like them and wants to be; he is drawn to that power greater than himself that can change a man's heart and actions. He admits his weakness but knows the source of this power; God. He is also very inspired by the grace of God. This is wonderfully illustrated in the song by the same name on U2's latest release.

However unorthodox the bros in U2 seem to the rest of Christendom, these guys are very sincere and very plugged in to God (in fact, I would dare say they are seeking harder and desiring that intimate connection with the Lord than probably a lot of Christians who attend churches today are). This book will be a refreshing eye opener to people who have had questions about these guys and whether or not their faith is real. It will answer some questions for fans as well as give those unfamiliar with the band a proper introduction to who these guys are. I think that especially those believers who have expressed criticism towards U2 need to read this great book. I found it very inspiring and challenging to my faith.

In consideration of the song "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," I believe these guys are still searching, but not for God. They have found Him. What they are searching for is an honest expression of truth by those who profess to know Him. An expression of truth that is more than merely words professed, but actions demonstrated. One might also consider this song in respect to 1 Corinthians 13 (the line, "I have spoken with the tongues of angels..."), where love is the only thing that really matters. Bono seems to be expressing that he has experienced the "things" of God, but desires more; to be captivated and completely motivated by love. These guys have not walked away, they are determined to "Walk On!"

I highly recommend this book! It will be most meaningful to those who are at least remotely familiar with U2's music, but I think even someone who doesn't know much about them at all will find a number of insightful gems in this great title.

Summary: Touch the Flame
Review: This book is a must-have for any Christian U2 fan. Stockman
explores the many biblical references in U2's songs, and supports
them with scripture. The book looks into the heart and soul of a band that is so often misunderstood. Bono's spirituality is examined in great detail, rightly so as he does write the band's lyrics and therefore guides their musical direction. This book gives new focus to U2's wonderful songs about faith, redemption and deliverance.

Summary: A rock revelation
Review: This is the most spritiual book on rock music I've read since Alan Arlt's THE CARPET FROGS. Bono and the rest of U2 prove that you don't have to attend church or Sunday mass to be moved spiritually. Wonderful, indepth interviews that shed new meaning on their lyrics.

Summary: Walk On The Spiritual Journey Of U2
Review: For me this book was brilliant. Yes I am a U2 fan. My pre-Christian days U2 always led me beyond earth to the spiritual. But after becoming a believer in Christ, to express that you still love them met with frowns from the Theological Police.
As a journalist and a writer of fiction (first book in the process of being published) the creative and artistic side of worship is BEYOND important it's essential, and until I came across Stockman I thought I was alone. If you are a christian and wanting to EXPRESS and use your GOD GIVEN gift... Then DO IT! It's allowed, you were made by Him to create... Obey! If you are a U2 fan but don't share the Faith then you will still enjoy the read, as there are some great insights to what drives the band.
This book has done so much for me - its like a revelation. Thanks to the publisher and to Steve Stockman - Brilliant...!

Summary: It's about time... and worth the wait!
Review: As a practically lifelong fan of U2 who has appreciated their musical depth and spiritual conscience since the mid-80s, "Walk On" is overdue and an essential read!

I have come across "surface" U2 fans for years with very limited understanding of the band beyond their radio hits and catchy choruses. Some of these and other fans also grew frustrated with the likes of "Still Haven't Found" and the 90's version of U2. These folks would benefit greatly by taking the time to look beyond the surface and into the heart of this legendary group. "Walk On" affords that opportunity as it reveals the true meaning behind the songs that have fielded the most questions. When discovering the true meaning of such songs in "Walk On," the reader finds that the songs that seem the most vague or confusing are actually the deepest and most meaningful spiritually.

The greatest discovery for me by reading "Walk On" is the revelation of some of the '90s songs and concerts. The songs on "Pop," for example, that initially raised my eyebrow and begged my questions happen to be the most spiritually deep songs of the 90s from U2!

For me, having 25 years of key interviews, lyrics, albums, concerts, and many of the spiritual and social involvements of U2 elaborated upon and summed up in one book is invaluable.

Finally, someone (Stockman) with spiritual depth and musical understanding has written a book from the important standpoint, "To understand the music of U2, you must know where they are coming from spiritually." How true!

Summary: Good info. on U2, Damning Commentary on the Church
Review: There's not a whole lot of new information here for the avid U2 fan. If you've looked at U2's work from a Christian perspective before, and if you've read the band's interviews, you've already figured out where they stand spiritually.

The real value is in Stockman's comments regarding the Church. As a minister, Stockman has the credentials to point out the failings of the Church and the success of Bono and U2 in doing Christ's work here on Earth.

More than anything, Walk On motivated me to be more active as a Christian and to insist on the same activity from my congregation and my Christian friends.

Summary: Get your highlighter ready!!
Review: Spending my gift certificates from Christmas, I happened upon Walk On: The Spiritual Journey of U2. I grabbed it figuring reading a little about one of my favorite bands could fill some spare time.

Wow!!! Sensational!!!. I pulled out my highlighter after about 30 pages knowing that I would want to reference this work in the future. Dog-eared pages abound.

Stockman traces the history of the band (in particular, Bono) and their corresponding spiritual journeys; showing us even finer details to the songs that we already knew had a spiritual base. You'll see Stockman's premise that U2 is a band truly living as Christians in the world (yes, there are excesses at times, but how often have you read of any member of U2 in a tabloid?), calling for belief to be about more than words and religious practices.

Hey, you should read this book simply because, as Stockman says, "What other band is still producing anything as fresh and original twenty years into its career? What other band is giving the live act the kind of constant reinvention or passionate performance that U2 is doing? What other band has added to its art the desire to use its status to do more than make money and enjoy the fame?"

Read this book about a band that has taken Truth and made it digestible to the world outside Church gates.

Summary: Hallelujah !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: U2 Fans: Purchase "Walk On" Now. This book feels like a companion to my "Elevation" DVD's. And, those are a classic.

Passages From "Walk On" can bring tears to even the most cynical eye. You will weep with sorrow, (When you learn how the Boys' spiritual home pushes them away}. *And,* weep also with joy - Faith abides! Grace tramples over impediments, ('What can I give back to God, for the blessing He poured out on me?...'} I couldn't stop reading "Walk On." Bono's spiritual seach shines as a central Sacred PASSION within his Soul.

This book will force readers to ponder the meaning of Faith, & its relation to 'Social Action.' It MIGHT also get ya to talk to God again.

::::::: God Is In The House: More Than Elvis :::::::

If you enjoyed "Elevation" you will love this book. It is Emotionally charged & wholly powerful. This book will let you see U2 in a fresh way.
