Summary: Great advice and worth every penny !
Review: I bought this book to gain some insight into the voice acting industry. What I got was great information, realistic insights, and a great story of one man's journey to the top of his craft.
The book works as an autobiography and as a reference tool. Suggestion and tips sections are separated by page color which allow the reader quick access to valuable information and training tips. Viewed as an autobiography, the continuity of the book flows with all of the sections blending smoothly from beginning to end. I predict that once you own this book, it will not remain on your shelf gathering dust. Rather, it will travel with you to your own auditions offering friendly advice when you need it most. I know that I'll be carrying my copy on my journey!

Summary: Excellant book
Review: I have been thinking of getting into doing voice overs for quite a few years, but, really never got around to it. I had this book around for a little while and I finally got around to reading it.

I learned a lot about the voice over biz. the technical sections were very helpful. Harlan is a very funny man. "Blooper's Soap" indeed.

I am inspired to start working towards a career in voice over.

great book!. I laughed, I cried, I pounded the wall with my naked fists... Ok. I got a little carried away.

Buy this book.

Summary: Funny, Inspirational, and Very Detailed!!!,
Review: I laughed out loud throughout this book, Harlan's a wonderful storyteller. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in how the biz works whether you want to be a VO, producer/director, or on the tech side. Being on the tech side myself, as a recording engineer I have a new understanding and respect of what the VO goes thru in a session. I especially enjoyed Harlan's studio term definitions, something every new VO needs to know to feel comfortable in a session.

Summary: Highly recommended!
Review: I must confess I did hesitate a bit when I saw this book in a London theatre/media bookshop, because of the fact that I'm already working in the voice-over business for more than 2 years - I feared that it may only contain information I already knew - but not in the least. This is such a complete book to read, not only when you're thinking of building out a voice-over career, but also when already working in the business.

Summary: The Real Deal
Review: I never met Harlan Hogan, but I also started in radio and soon switched to commercial production. Only I was doing it from the other side of the glass, as engineer--and then director--of quite a few thousand national and regional spots, working with hundreds of VO talents on the East Coast and LA. So I know what these guys go through.

Everything Harlan writes is true: the techniques, the way the business works, the friendships that form between actors competing for the same jobs, the life. Except his way of telling it is funnier than real life.

This is actually two books, interleaved. Chapters alternate between sage (and hard-earned) advice on polishing voice-acting performing and job-getting skills, and some of the things Harlan had to go through to learn these lesions. If you're an announcer, engineer, or sharp producer, you'll chuckle over the war stories. If you're trying to break into the business, you couldn't have a better teacher.

Summary: Should be on the bookshelf of every voice actor...
Review: I picked up this book at the recommendation of an instructor at a voice over workshop. I had seen it advertised but never purchased. Once I did buy it was hard to put it down. The book is so fun to read you hardly realize what a great amount of knowledge it gives you. You will indeed realize it however! This book is full of information about the voice over industry and presented in a way that will keep you entertained for hours. If you are considering entering the field of voice acting you should read this book. If you are already in the voice over industry...you should read this book.
I've read most of the books on voice over in print today. This one, like Mr. Hogan's voice work, is a stand out classic!

Summary: An up-to-date & must-have-book on the business of voiceover
Review: I really enjoyed reading the sections on "Techniques of a Voice-Over." I read all of them in one day! I took away so many tactics, strategies, lessons and detailed-up-to-date information on building my home studio, getting an agent, the voice-over market, taxes and more. I have read four other books on voice-over and by the fourth book, because of the redundancy, I decided I did not need another book on the subject. I was wrong - Harlan Hogan's book is very timely and provides details that are not covered in the other books. I have been contemplating creating a home studio for months but not knowing how to navigate through the mountains of information, equipment and software on the Internet and in audio magazines. I look forward to reading the "Tales" sections next.

This book does not replace the other voice-over books. If someone is just starting in voice-over, in addition to this book, I would recommend some of the other books that cover introduction to voice-over, interpretation of copy, copy basics, vocal exercises & techniques and detailed information on the different areas in which one could get work.

Summary: FINALLY A BOOK FOR PROFESSIONAL VOICE OVER ARTISTS
Review: I was so thrilled to see a new voiceover book out there. One that actually teaches something to people who are already professionals, as well as plenty of info for newbies. This is a great source of inspiration and info to help vo artists think outside the box. Thanks also for the great stories from behind the microphone!
