Summary: Masterfully presented and very, very entertaining!
Review: As an English-language voice-over/narrator (albeit based in Japan), my praise for Harlan's book may be a bit partisan, mostly because I've always admired his work. But I can say with unbiased conviction that VO is an excellent book - very entertaining and enlightening! For one thing, it was comforting to learn that no matter where you ply your trade, the "cast of characters" and their attendant idiosyncrasies are inexplicably alike. All of which makes the job ... well, fun. VO is a must-read for anybody in or thinking about getting into voice-acting or any aspect of the entertainment or advertising industries in general. There is so much valuable information - what-to-do, how-to, please-don't, and of the plain just-for-the-heck-of-it variety. It made me reappraise my own 20 years in the business and has somehow inspired a renewed zest in and appreciation for my own work. (Thank you Harlan!) It's amazing that a book could be so informative and yet so thoroughly entertaining. I sincerely believe that this would be a fun read even for people with only a passing interest in this little-known art. A very readable, very informative, very funny book about a facet of acting that deserves to have its story told. And in VO, Harlan does a fantastic job!

Summary: Highly Recommended!
Review: Harlan has managed to weave together personal stories of his life in voice-overs with practical advise & inside information about the world of the voice-over actor.

I would consider this to be a must-read for anyone interested in the business; you'll learn a few things, and get more than your fair share of laughs!

Summary: Harlan's Humor Hits Home
Review: Harlan Hogan has written a book that is not only educational and informative, it is also wildly entertaining. As the title suggests, this book is not all about technique. The story of his rise to the top is interesting and told with humility and much self-deprecating wit. The autobiographical chapters are not just Harlan's story, they are the story of many top VO actors today.

This book touches on areas lacking in others such as history of the industry and where the business is going in the coming years. The final chapter, 'Fast Forward to Future Tense - Where Voice Acting Goes From Here," tells how Hogan sees things developing over the next few decades with the improvement of technology and synthesized voices. Fear not, machines will not be able to convey emotion like human voices for many decades so there is much work out there for us mere mortals.

Like no other book about voice-over, this will clue in the rookie about the lore and lure of the business. It does not cover the nuts and bolts as deeply as other VO tomes. If you are looking for scripts to practice, you will be disappointed. On the other hand, if you want to laugh while learning, then this is the book for you.

Summary: VO: Tales and Techniques of a Voice-Over Actor
Review: Harlan Hogan is as funny as he is talented. This book is a must have for anyone in the VO business or considering a career in VO. This book gives insight into the business of voice acting by someone who has been in the trenches and worked hard so that now he can spend most of his time soaking in a hot tub. Seriously, this book is full of infornation from what it takes from a talent standpoint to advice on record keeping and setting up a home studio. There are also lots of great stories about some the best voices in the industry. Mix that with Harlans sense of humor and you have a winner!

Summary: This book is my bible
Review: Harlan Hogan says it all here! His honest, upfront approach woven into a unique story about his life as a voice actor is a must have for anyone interested in the voice acting buisiness. He gives you direction, resources, knowledge, humor, and focus. This book is priceless, and my bible. Thanks Harlan

Summary: Well told by a n insider
Review: Harlan's book puts you there. I didn't get to know him well when I lived in Chicago, but I know many of the people and places he writes so well about. Insight, practical advice, and an accurate description of the business.

Summary: Fun and Informative!
Review: Having read all the books out there, I finally came across a book that is hilarious as well as informative! Harlan has generously told his secrets of the trade in an easy-to-read format that is logical in its layout and leads the reader through the pages in a flash! Also, great to dip into for a quick review of some technical information. The message to me, as aspiring voice actor: yes, its hard work and one must learn the business, but you can also have fun along the way. Bravo, Mr. Harlan - A MUST READ!!

Summary: Balanced approach
Review: Hogan does a nice job of breaking things down into simple terms while making an effort not to talk down to the reader. That style then blends well with the storytelling, making it a much more enjoyable read than other VO books I've read.

Summary: VO: Tales and Techniques of a Voice-Over Actor
Review: I am a new vo actor. A wanna-be. I have a good voice, or have always been told, and was ready to knock everyone dead. I enrolled in a class for vo's and I was horrible. I did everything wrong. I needed to do something. So, I bought Harlan's book, VO: Tales and Techniques of a Voice Over Actor. It is laugh out loud funny as he describes his first days and the entire history of his experience in the business.

Not only is it thouroughly entertaining and funny, I learned so much. After I read the book and went back to class, my teacher was shocked! I am sure that prior to having read the book, my performance warranted the, "You better find a new career choice" speech. However, instead of the speech, I was told how much I had grown and how funny I was. This is due the book.

Buy it and enjoy it!
