Rating: Summary: Interesting yet hard to understand! Review: This book contains 1001 ways to Checkmate as the title explains. Yet the 1001 ways are not taught to you, yet there are just very small chess boards with different positions, that I personally could not figure out. There is a very small amount of text to explain so many diagrams. This book is way beyond comprehension for a beginer, and I as a intermediate player, also can not understand half of the "ways to checkmate". I would only recommend this book to advanced players and those who might have a lot of time to TRY to understand the book.
Rating: Summary: This is THE BEST chess book I have ever read Review: This book has many great ways to win. I love to win.My chess game has improved a lot. The book is self - contained -- you don't have to set up a chess board and play out the moves--it is all right there for you. Fantastic for "on the go" reading. Some checkmates are easy -- some medium, and some are a bit tricky. My rating is 1500 and I found this book very informative. I wish I could give it 6 stars.
Rating: Summary: Reinfeld did a good job. Review: This book is an excellent excercise book for intermediate players. Some problems are pretty hard, not as hard as Chess Informant problems, of course. And it's cheap, like most of the old style books.
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Mating Collection. Review: This book is one of the best collections of checkmates I have seen. Modestly priced and w/many diagrams it is an excellent buy. This book does not indulge with alot of nonsense "modern" chess books do. In that there is nothing but diagrams and solutions! The author cuts to the chase and does not idulge in alot of useless verbage all too many books do to today. In addition the reader doesn't need a board and set with him to read this book! I read this book when I was bout 1400 stregth and reread it recently (I am currently 2000 strength) and cannot help but enjoy it! I highly recommend it and cannot think of any book which comes close for this topic.
Rating: Summary: Great bang for the buck Review: This book is one that will keep you busy for a while, and keeps on giving. I am currently around a 1300 player. Using this book has helped me to improve my tactical vision. I have spotted mates in one, that other people around my same rating have missed in real games on the internet. My copy is dog-eared, stained, torn and well beaten, proving to me that I got my money's worth! main thing I like about the book: o You can take it anywhere. I like to read it on airplanes, at the beach, at the gym on a exercise bike, and when I am away from a computer or on a trip. You do not need a chess set, unlike a lot of chess books. One time I was reading it on a plane, and the guy behind me had the same book in his carry-on! o You can spend anywhere from 5 minutes at a time with the book, or many hours. o It is not expensive Main things I don't like: o The answers are not always complete or exactly correct. They need to be checked with a computer. o The notation in the old school descriptive notation. I guess every chess player should know this notation, but it would be nice if it was updated. You can't go wrong with this book.
Rating: Summary: judge this book by It's cover Review: This book is only what it says it is,good for players with 75+ games experience, somewhat difficult to read, too many problems really would recommend less problems with more analyses book,If a lot of problems is what you want this book serves it's purpose magnificently ,but I woldn't recommend it otherwiise END
Rating: Summary: The best chess book I ever read Review: This book showed 1001 checkmates which helped me win 101 consecutive chess games. This book is one of the best tools for beginners and intermediate players. If you want to win chess games then this is the book you should read.
Rating: Summary: Great tactical chess practice, a must have! Review: This is a must have for any tournament chess player. It helps your visualization of chess moves and patterns for creating a checkmate. It is easier than the 1001 combinations book because you know the goal is to get the king checkmated. The 1001 combinations book was too hard for me until I went through a lot of the checkmate book. The reason is that you don't know which piece you are trying to make a combination on. However, after going through this checkmate book, the combination book is much easier now. My advice--start with the checkmates then move on to the combinations book. However, if you are already good >1600-1700, then maybe start in directly with the combinations, since they might be more realistic positions. (However, the books are cheap by chess book standards so get them both...)
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: This is a must-have for all chess players. It's challenging, engaging, and extremely portable, since you don't have to read it. I read it on the bus and between classes. Only thing anyone should worry about is answers are in descriptive notation, instead of algebraic.
Rating: Summary: Lots of problems, some mistakes, Discriptive Notation Review: This is a puzzle book of forced mates organized by theme and with very minimal hints like "Queen Sacrifice..White to Move".
At first, if you have never done puzzles like these before, they are *very* difficult. You will find yourself covering pieces with a finger after you imagine them captured and making lots of mistakes. You will wonder if you are challenged with regard to your visualization skills. Then a small miracle takes place. You start getting them right and it takes you less time to do it with each day you work on them.
Expect to be working with this book for weeks if not longer.
If you look hard enough on the internet you will find these positions in PGN files, in case you want check them for accuracy with a computer. The book is a great bargain at $8 and makes a great diversion while riding a train or bus. Just be careful not to miss your stop as I have done a couple of times.
One other point which deserves mentioning here is that the book is very poorly bound. Pages start falling out immediately. A memo pad is more likely to stay together than this book is.
Having said that, I would definitely buy this book again. In fact, I may have to!
