Rating: Summary: Extreme Interdependence Review: DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. Comparing this book to Chapin's classic is a joke. "Warm ups" are the same as the "patterns" section. There is no "meat" in this book. Not until page 45 does the book change it up with some trip patterns. Even the intermediate level percussionist will be extremely bored by this book.
Rating: Summary: AWESOME! Review: This book is inspiring! It has all the tools necessary to correct any coordination hang-ups one may have. Definately NOT for beginners, but an invaluable tool for those who want to reach higher levels. This book is a welcome addition to any drummer's library.
Rating: Summary: Ultimate Drum Book Review: This has got to be THE BEST drum book out there! I started checking out the Extreme Warm ups at the beginning of the book and my interdependence skills behind the drum set has dramatically improved. Do yourself a favor and get EXTREME!!!
Rating: Summary: A very good book...with a caveat. Review: This is book is very good as long as the exercises within are understood to be a means to an end and not the end itself. You won't be learning licks or musicality with this book, but rather developing the coordination to create your own. It is a TECHNIQUE book and not an "practice-this-lick" book. The underlying concept is to develop your ability to execute any combination with any limb at any time and understand how differing rhythms work with and against each other. Some of the exercises sound terrible and would not be practical in any musical setting, but, again I want to empahsize it's about developing smooth facility and NOT about musicality. As long as one bears that in mind this book will be very useful. Also, this is not material to be ripped through. It demands concentration, memorization and consistency in one's practicing habits to be effective and should be used at the same time in conjunction with books, concepts, etc., that do focus on musicality, otherwise you could end up sounding cold, grooveless and emotionless like somebody riding a bike down a flight of stairs. I spent two months just getting the warm-up exercises down! After working consistently with this book the results ARE awesome - it gets easier and easier to play accurately exactly what comes into your head and develop new, interesting material for your musical vocabulary. Be patient, tho, the exercises can be very challenging and frustrating. I've played off and on professionally for almost 30 years and I'm guessing this book might become the "Chapin book" for the new millenium.
