Rating: Summary: rib-tickling pleasantry Review: Jean Shepherd is a knock-out when it comes to the art of Americana. At the age of 21, while reading this book, I felt the exact same way that I did at 12, while first seeing "A Christmas Story." Wanda Hickey was enlightenment into the meat and potatoes world of the Parker family, and also some of the time honored favorites....like the Bumpus hounds. As always, Shepherd's descriptive abilities and humor are like no other!
Rating: Summary: Very funny look at teenage years. Review: Most people have seen the movie "A Christmas Story" about Ralphie and the Red Rider BB gun. This movie is based on short stories written by Jean Shephard. This book is a collection of stories about Ralphie in his high school years. You can always find something thats reminds you of your youth.
Rating: Summary: Maynardg Review: Saw "Phantom of the Open Hearth" on local PBS around Xmas sometime in the mid/late 70's -- I concur about the effects on one's physiology -- the absolute roit was the "barfing" scene where Ralph describes what he is regurgitating, saying "Wait, that was last week!". An experience I'm sure any young man has had at least once in his life. Your memory is not faulty on the subject. I was saddened to learn of Jean Shepherd's recent passing -- I feel that he has created some great images through his books.
Rating: Summary: A hilarious novel of short stories about childhood memories Review: Shepherd has an excellent flair for comedy. He uses outrageous exaggerations and detailed descriptions to have the reader in tears of laughter. The stories are very easy to relate to because of their dealings with common events. These include the county fair, the high school prom, and one's first love. The novel also offers insight on life in the 1930's and 1940's. Children play with tops and the family listens to the radio for entertainment. A turkey dinner at home is quite an expense. Overall, the book is quite entertaining and hard to put down.
Rating: Summary: This book reminds us of childhood memorys that we all have! Review: Shepherd reminances about his childhood memories that all of us can relate to. These funny stories bring back fond memories of our childhood, these memories include car trips with family, carnivals/fairs, vacations, childhood games, and of course the unforgetable prom!
Rating: Summary: Entertaining and creative Review: Shepherd sure knows how to make a book interesting to read. This book expresses great humor as well as deeply enriched, creative topics; which always keep your mind refering back to the similarity it has with your own life!
Rating: Summary: more for maynardg Review: Thank you for confirming my recollections of the Phantom of the Open Hearth TV special. My mother and I also recall seeing it on PBS in the late 1970s. I, too, would love to see it available on video. The most memorable scene is the one in which the townspeople assemble at the train station to assist the man who ordered the house from the Sears catalog. As the folks are gleefully opening carton after carton, it starts pouring rain. Everyone scurries home. The poor guy is left standing alone with his half un-packed house. I also remember the famous Nehi lamp that is included in A Christmas Story. In Phantom the father orders it from the soda company and sets it up in the living room. He almost worships it as an idol. Ralph is high school-age and winds up taking Wanda Hickey to the prom. When cocktails are served before dinner, Ralph knows only how to order a "triple," just like his old man. Of course he becomes incapacitated soon after. There is also another movie entitled Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss. The family takes the Oldsmobile on a summer vacation to a resort in Michigan. The characters are about the ages of those in A Christmas Story. Ralph, Flick, and Schwarz get their first job moving appliances in a warehouse. The vacation is threatened when the family dog runs away and Mom announces she's not going until it's found. All the way to Michigan Ralph is haunted by the knowledge that he's forgotten to pack his old man's fishing tackle box. Randy (of course) is carsick the entire trip--absolutely hysterical. Mom insists on stopping at a roadside stand selling concrete mushrooms, plastic flamingos, etc. Anyone who's vacationed at a lake in Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Michigan will love this movie. I believe it was on Disney Channel about ten years ago.
Rating: Summary: More Gems from an American Original Review: The late, great, Jean Shepherd's collection of short fiction, "Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories" is required reading for any fan of "A Christmas Story" or "In God We Trust." Hell, it's required reading for anybody in the market for a laugh-out-loud book. Shepherd really is a genuis, a word which is tossed around way to casually these days; but in Jean's case, it's not hyperbole. Flick Lives!
Rating: Summary: HAS ANYONE SEEN SHEP LATELY? Review: This book can only touch the surface of this very humorous man. In addition to having seen him annually for many years at Princeton (he's inexplicably stopped) I've been lucky enough to come across some radio tapes of him recorded in the late '50s and early '60s. They're truly hilarious and sometimes surreal. . .Lenny Bruce had nothing on Jean Shepherd and while it's true he's recycled his material (when was the last time you heard anything original from George Carlin?) his message of man's many foibles never gets lost on the listener/reader. If anyone knows where he can be heard or seen (and he hasn't written anything in book form in quite a while), e-mail me - - - Shepherd's my idol and I hate to miss his talent.
Rating: Summary: SMASHING inginunity of rural life IN Indiana Review: This book was a whirling derbish of brillantly compilled stories. HIGH QUALITY! Although it was so long ago I could still relate to it today. Shepherd told realistic stories which made me giggle and brought back memories. GREAT BOOK!
