Rating: Summary: What would "Yardbird" say? Review: As a jazz musician, you will be called upon to play the jazz standards in this book. The musicians we respect and try to immulate, such as Charlie Parker and John Coltrane, have based many of their songs on these jazz standard. If you play the alto and/or baritone saxophone this is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: A good introduction to jazz Review: As an intermediate piano student eager to learn about jazz chord voicings, this book has proven valuable and has expanded my knowledge of music and ability to play with others. The book has also introduced me to jazz interpretations of standards, popular songs and Broadway tunes. I've been able to take it with me and use it to accompany vocalists where there is no set agenda and always find plenty to play. The type size is very small but if I want to work on one song alot or use with others I just enlarge it through photocopies. I hope others in this series are as good.
Rating: Summary: I agree with Drew Review: Drew is a great guy. I agree with him. There are over 625 songs in this here book. You should buy it. I like it. A lot.
Rating: Summary: GREAT FOR BEGINNERS TOO! Review: I AM A BEGINNING STUDENT OF THE SAX AND CHARLIE PARKER AND JAZZ IN GENERAL IS THE REASON I'VE PICKED IT UP. STRAIGHT UP, THIS BOOK IS FUN! I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. IN FACT I'M BUYING IT AGAIN FOR MY NIECE WHO IS GETTING INTO PLAYING THE SAX. BUT DON'T BE FOOLED, EVEN AFTER YOU PLAY THE TITLE YOU'LL STILL NEED A LITTLE PRACTICE BEFORE YOU BECOME THE LIKES OF YARDBIRD, BUT ITS FUN TRYING.

Rating: Summary: WOWIE WOW WOW! Review: I have bought many books for playing Jazz on Sax, but this one is by far the best!! Many fun-to-learn songs. You can't turn even 5 pages without finding a song you would like to try out! I reccommend this book to all Beggining, Intermediate AND advanced players. For the begginers, though, don't expect to be able to play every song in this book right away, but it's still worth buying.
Rating: Summary: Too many mistakes to be taken seriously Review: I've never seen a fake book with so many inaccuracies. "So What", the Miles Davis standard, is presented in D dorian with the chords half a step too high for the melody. "Song for My Father" appears in 2/4 time, with the A section being one measure (two counts) short. "Basin Street Blues" appears without chord changes. There are plenty of bad chord choices in this book that don't come anywhere near fitting the melody. Furthermore, with "over 625 songs", omitted are such essential jazz standards as "Stardust", "I Got Rhythm", "Blue Bossa"... instead you get tunes like "Frosty the Snow Man" and pop tunes by Carole Bayer Sager. I gave up referring to this book a long time ago. I don't doubt that there are other mistakes I haven't come across. About as useful as a dictionary with misspelled words.

Rating: Summary: Don't leave home without it Review: The contents have been explained thoroughly in the product description above. This is kind of music I dig and love to play. Small enough to carry to jam sessions and like. The pieces that come up will be found in this book with a good likelihood, and also in the same key. The reason I am not giving 4 stars instead of five are: - The cord changes are sometimes simplified. It is good if you play a song first time. However, in some standards a more versatility is expected. - The good point is this book's small size. However, in the dark it is difficult to read. Some of my favorites I have copied in larger scale. Summa summarum, recommended for the cats going to jam sessions.
