Summary: Best how-to book
Review: Along with the official third edition of the Scrabble dictionary, this is all you'll ever need to become a competent player. It's worth the price just to get the lists of 2-letter, then 3-letter add-on words. Lots of exercises if you're really into it. I play on the computer and have dramatically improved my score with this. As other reviewers have noted, just be sure the words listed are also in the official dictionary--they're not hard to spot and if you make a mistake and get challenged once you'll never forget to avoid them thereafter!

Summary: Improve your Scrabble Game
Review: As an avowed Scrabble enthusiast, I found this book to be both interesting and illuminating. I would estimate that most people who read this book can expect to improve their average score by at least 50 or 60 points. It also gives a glimpse into the strange world of true Scrabble masters and competitive Scrabble. Everyone from a total newbie to an experienced veteran will find something for himself in this text.

Review: Everything Scrabble will teach you everything you need to know to become a competitive club or tournament level Scrabble player. It gives you a basic outline on improving your game. While the word lists themselves are slightly outdated, they are accurate for the most part. A word's acceptability depends upon which word source is used. The 2nd edition of The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary contained certain "offensive" terms such as "goy" (a non-Jewish person). These words were eliminated in the family friendly edition (3rd edition of The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary). The Official Word List (OWL)is the word list used in sanctioned tournaments of the National Scrabble Association. It contains words such as "goy". Everything Scrabble is the best "How-To" book on Scrabble that I've run across. I heartily recommend it to all beginning, mid-level, and starting tournament players.

Review: If you want to beat your friends every time when playing scrabble then this is the book for you. It will help you with the most important move in scrabble - the two letter words. That alone is enough reason to buy the book not to mention the hundreds of other helpful tecniques.

Summary: A superb text on game strategy, with lots of exercises!
Review: So many authors on subjects like poker, pool/billiards or other games spend so much time flouting how much they love the game (as if we're supposed to be impressed), and less on the nuts and bolts of strategy. Mr. Edley does not fall within that category. This book, which I began reading and studying while frittering away my weekend hours living in Saudi Arabia, is so much more than a mere game fan's book. The exercises and points on strategy are genuinely helpful and clearly the result of some amount of thinking on his part. His point that the first thing you must learn in order to excel at Scrabble is to memorize the entire list of two-letter words is not to be taken lightly. I did this, and let me tell you that my game leaped a straight 70+ points on average!Parallels, hooks, fill-ins and front extensions are other means of combatting one's opponent, and they are lessons to be studied thoroughly. The elusive Bingo (a seven-letter play) receives a chapter unto itself, as do lessons on making words with the more cranky letters, X, Y, Q, V and others. All are worthwhile. The books is filled (and I mean filled) with layouts and lectern pieces for you to practice with. I set up my board like the layout in the book and got a wind-up egg timer to judge my ability to play to Edley's challenges. Not as fun as night out with a hot blonde, perhaps, but they all made me think about why I should lay out my letters in this fashion or the next. Okay. Enough already. I loved the book, the two months I spent working my way through the exercises kicked up my average score dramatically, and I have just joined the National Scrabble Association in hopes of pitting myself against some hard-core players. Love Scrabble? This is the book for you! (as is Edley's second volume of exercises called "The Scrabble Puzzle Book, for which I would give the very same review!).

Summary: Good tips, but contains errors
Review: The author of Everything Scrabble shares some very useful strategy tips that are not available anywhere else, but there are too many technical errors to give this book five stars. Many words that the author suggests for memorization (such as "da" and "goy") are NOT legal Scrabble words! It's frustrating to follow the advice of this book and study its words lists, only to have your words challenged by your opponent. These errors will, hopefully, be corrected in a subsequent edition.

Review: This book is worth the lists of 2 letter words, 3 letter words, words containing j,x,z etc. alone.
Just studying these lists and learning new strategies has raised my score significantly.
There are also a lot of puzzles which I'll tackle next. Good for anyone interested in improving thier score.

Summary: This book kicks ass.
Review: This book isn't written for the latest official word list, but there aren't THAT many changes in what words are acceptable. But this book is great. It explains basic strategy (which most people would never think about) such as how to decide what letters to leave on your rack, and also gives you lists of key words to remember, such as the 2-letter-words and the SATINE words and the 3-letter words with X, J, or Z. And then there are exercises to help you find those words on your rack. Some of these exercises are really tough. After reading this book and studying a little bit, I went from being the WORST player in the world to being a player who averages about one bingo per game. (A bingo is a play in which all seven tiles are used.) Buy this book. And if you need updated word lists, check out the on-line word generator.
