Summary: MAXIMIZE your puny home studio budget!
Review: I love this book! I am a lifelong professional musician with some audio and recording experience; I want to get started with recording, but funds are limited, and the idea of trying to sift through all the trade mags and internet articles to get "up to speed" on the latest recording equipment is daunting, to say the least.

Ben Milstead is well aware of professional recording techniques and gear, but he has THANKFULLY chosen to keep this book concise and easy to understand for people that are not necessarily educated, on even the basics of recording.

In several cases, he presents us with two viable ways to solve a problem: 1. The pro (expensive) way, and 2. The home-studio (cheap) way. The idea here is that home studio people can really have a shot at making something decent without spending a zillion dollars. I love that.

Although this book is well informed with the wisdom of the last few decades of recording, it is up-to-date in it's presentation about digital technology. This is important, because the nature of the recording world is really shifting from analog to digital. Digital has gained so much in quality and value over the last five years that even the most die-hard analog guys have reason to reconsider.

Ben touches on everything from planning and building a studio to recording to mastering to marketing and sales (and even a little on artistry and creative identity!). The book is broad in scope, yet simple to digest for just about anybody.

Not only that, it's just fun to read. At the times when he could get really long-winded and boring with detail, he makes the choice to be concise and entertaining.

If you want to get "up to speed" on the latest gear, and you want some practical, cost-effective ways to "get the music out of your head", get this book. You will not be disappointed.

Summary: This book is awesome!
Review: I received this book a few days ago and am amazed by the amount of useful information that it contains. If you are just getting into home recording like myself, this is the perfect book for you. The book discusses everything from software titles, setting up a home studio, tips and helpful information to get you moving in the right direction to a succinct and thorough explanation of the physics of sound. In short, this book has it all and I foresee using it for many years to come. I highly recommend this book to anyone getting into the hobby or business of home recording.

Summary: Mac Users Beware!
Review: I thought - cool - this is just what I need to start up my home recording studio with my Mac. Unfortunately, author Ben Milstead has nothing relevant for the Mac user and in fact discourages potential computer buyers against the Mac. All the "hands on" uses the Windows operating system and Sonar software. Nothing for the Mac user here. If I would been aware of this beforehand, I would have not purchased the downloaded version, instead opting for a more friendly Mac book. I think the description should have mentioned the non-Mac slant. The other half of the book I can use is good, but I feel I got only half my monies worth. The old adage of "Buyer Beware" is still one of importance in the digital age. Mac users stay away from this book, as I am sure there are better alternatives for us non Windows users out there.

Summary: Not bad at all.
Review: This book contained many tips that would have been far to easy to learn the hard way by botching up tracks without it. Granted if you are an experienced home recording person with a couple of years under the belt, this book would probably tell you everything you already know.
I am recommending this book to all fledgling home musicians with their own recording outfit and to those who are thinking about doing it. It should be known that you should have a little knowledge in the area though, it will make the text in the book easier to absorb. Thanks.
