Rating: Summary: important part of a very good series Review: Anyone who is serious about learning to play chess well should begin with Seirawan's Winning Chess series. I had heard good things about it, so I bought this series for my wife. I figured that it would all be too simple for me, but decided to skim through the books quickly anyway. I learned quit a bit from both the Tactics and Strategies books. Seirawan's system is very similar to the system that co-author Silman teaches in his more advanced How To Reassess Your Chess (which would be the perfect book to read after finishing the Seirawan series). I learned things from Strategies that I hadn't learned from Reassess; and Tactics goes into greater, very helpful detail about setting up and executing tactics and combinations. This is a great series, I recommend it strongly to any player rated under 1600.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I recently bought this book and found it to be outstanding in content. It gives you the fundamentals behind basic tactics such as pins, forks, skewers etc. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their tactical skill. I would also recommend not writing your solutions in the book, therefore you can reread every six months or so.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT TACTICAL CHESS BOOK---A MUST HAVE Review: This book will get any begining or average player over that seemingly unbreakable line that heads to a full uderstanding of tactical play. Before I read this book I always considered myself to be about an average chess player that could go 50-50 with average players and could always beat the below average ones but at the same time I always got crushed by any player better than me. This book is easy to understand and the author makes you feel like he is speaking directly to you. After I read this book my outlook on chess and my overall chess skill was changed all for the better. I would insist that anyone who is experiencing difficulty at improving their playing skill pick up this book and any other book from Yasser's "Winning" series.
Rating: Summary: The first book to buy for beginners Review: After learning how to play chess, you must learn tactics to survive, and this book is the perfect starting point to strengthen your game. Tactics, tactics, tactics!!!
Rating: Summary: A guide to the typical tactics that appear in chess games. Review: This was the second book in the five book Microsoft Winning Chess Series. The most beautiful aspects of chess are the combinations and tactics that appear in almost all chess games. I designed Winning Chess Tactics with the aim of showing typical tactical chess patterns. WCT covers all the basic and advanced tactics from pins, forks, double attacks, to X-Rays and Zwishenzugs. The positions are instructional and entertaining.
Rating: Summary: A modern classic Review: This is the only book on tactics you will ever need. I'd give it six stars if I could.
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: Before reading this book my USCF chess rating was around 800. Thanks to the tactics I learned in this book my rating is climbing very quickly. Now I can generally beat players with ratings around 1600. Thanks Yasser!
Rating: Summary: The Best Second Chess Book On The Market Today!! Review: This book is definitly the best 2nd chess book(the first being Play Winning Chess by the same author). This book teaches tactics, from the pin all the way up to complex moves and combinations. Yasser is one of the best authors of chess books anywhere. He knows how to teach, something lacking from most chess authors.
Rating: Summary: Patzer to Chessplayer! Review: I read this book almost a year ago when I knew nothing about the game. Now, I play in clubs regularly and find myself able to make combinations and hold my own in highly tactical games. I owe it to this book in giving me a great foundation in basic tactics. A perfect "first chess book".
Rating: Summary: So dog eared I'll have to buy another! Review: After 12+ years of not playing, I was really rusty. The patzers were no problem but until I studied this book, the club players were eating me alive. It refreshed my memories of winning combinations and now the club has to be careful or I'll eat them alive! If you need a good book that is easy to read, easy to understand, and a book that any player below class A could use this is it. If my game starts to slack, I always pick it up again. The problems and tests are great for beginner to accomplished player. My book is getting a little worn and I'm sure it will be the first book in my collection that will have to be replaced from continual use. I salute you Yasser and Jeremy!
