Rating: Summary: Exhausting but cool Review: This is an essential addition to the book shelf of any Beatles fan or serious musician. The book chronicles the group's instruments from their fledgling days as the Quarrymen (where battered acoustics and imitation Fender guitars where the tools of choice) up until the groups disintegration in 1970. Well written and researched with plenty of annecdotes from their roadies and sound techs along the way. Though much of this has probably been written about before in the hundreds books on the band this is the first publication written soley regarding their instruments. Perhaps the most interesting revelation (for me at least) is that Harrison was always Strat and Marshall man. It was only the groups sponsership deals with vox and Gretsch that prevented him from using them. Most Beatle influenced guitarists probably know that John and Paul were greatly influenced by Donovan's finger picking style from jamming with the musician in India. Lesser known is the fact that Donovan had his guitars stripped to the thinnest coat of varnish to let the instrument "breath". No sooner said than done. Upon returning to England the two front men had both their guitars stripped to down to the wood. This may partly explain the unique sound of the groups guitars on their later albums. This may sound trivial to some. But to me as guitarist who's playing never stop's to be influenced by the greatest band ever, it's nothing short of enlightenment. Rest easy George.
Rating: Summary: One of a kind Beatles book. Review: This is the only book of its kind, that I know of.The info in here amazed me, lots of it I never knew, e.g. What they used on tour, from 1960-1966, what was used in the studio from 1961-1970.Info on most or all of their guitars, and Drum info that was rarely known before. And (I think) there's even stick size for Ringo, if not, he usually used 5A, but not always. The original ad's used for some of the instruments. The Amp info impressed me, some I never even knew about.Even how many times the Beatles logo was replaced on the front Bass Drum head, and when it was changed, from 1962-1969. This book will impress you, surprise you, and it might even make you want to actually buy one of these beautiful Guitars, Key Boards, or one of Ringo's Kits. Rickenbacker,Hofner,Premier,Vox,Ludwig, its all in this book. Most Beatles fans need this book, Buy yours now.
