Summary: "THE BEST JAZZ GUITAR BOOK EVER!"
Review: Just recently I joined the schools jazz band and am enjoying it. But Jazz music is pretty tough and I needed some help! There were chords I never even heard of and some rythms I needed help with so I went to get some help. I asked a good friend of mine and he said he would recommend "Melbays Getting Into Jazz Fusion Guitar by Scott Miller" so I did. This book has helped me soooooooooo much! Whenever I need to find a chord I can look up any chord and it has like every chord you can think of! It's helped me with chords and has helped me with rythm and it comes with a c.d. with different rythms and songs and you play with it. My Jazz Band teacher is impressed with how well I've progressed. I definately recommend this book to anyone who needs help or want to progress. It REALLY WORKS!

Summary: What more could you ask for?
Review: Mr. Miller's book is fantastic. What more could you ask for? If you have had trouble understanding lydian dominant, this book will set you staight. Mr. Miller's knowledge of the guitar is obvious and I absolutley love all the modes written both in 3 note per string and the 5 shapes. A review states there aren't enough ripping solos, um, there are no solos at all because you are supposed to insert your own! (Yeah, that's what the CD is all about) For the Jack who said his dog has taught him more than this book, we would all love to hear you play!

Summary: A true reference work for every guitarist
Review: My local music store pointed me to "Getting Into Jazz Fusion Guitar" for which I am grateful because it is unlikely that I otherwise would have thought to check it out. Now I wish I would have known about this gem when I first started learning guitar - or even when I began studying piano. This book taught me more about scales, modes, and chords in two hours of reading than I had ever learned during my 20 years of playing classical piano. It is an extensive source of essential practice material for any guitarist regardless of the style of music being studied.

The introduction of the book states that the intent "is to provide the guitarist with a resource of the most important chord/scale relationships found in jazz, jazz-fusion, and other contemporary styles of music." Mr. Miller nails this goal dead on. While the quantity of information to digest may seem daunting to the guitarist who is flirting with the study of guitar, anyone engaged in a serious courtship with the instrument will find Miller's work to be an invaluable resource. For someone content with simple little tunes sung around a campfire, it is probably a little too deep.

With a style of music where the ability to improvise and creatively express one's own musical thoughts is the true mark of a master, developing a solid foundation in the underlying vocabulary of jazz fusion is an essential step in graduating from apprenticeship. "Getting Into Jazz Fusion Guitar" will not disappoint you as a textbook for laying that groundwork.

The fact that Scott Miller is able to present such a respectable quantity of essential information on music theory fundamentals, scales, modes of scales, and the most common chords used in conjunction with those scales and modes - and do so in a very logical, orderly, and easy-to-follow fashion - speaks volumes concerning his mastery of the subject matter. I will be very disappointed if this were the last book that Mr. Miller writes.

Summary: This book is most eliquent, and yet so debonair
Review: The author of this book must be an absolute genius. Although I have never had the opportunity of meeting him, Scott Miller's book radiates with superior knowledge and expierience. Scott obviously has compiled his entire guitar career into this single work, which is most commendable by any standard. The vast knowledge of Whole-Tone, Diminished, and Augmented, scales is enough to awe even the most fine tuned guitarist (no pun intended). To some people that have posted on this forum, it seems, that they feel Scott Miller is simply a semi-educated, 5$ an hour guitar teacher, trying to make a buck. These calumnious views are merely the product of simple minds. Scott Miller a brilliant man, and I hope to see more ground breaking guitar curriculum coming from his direction.

Summary: Mostly Theory
Review: The book is fine, but perhaps doesn't have enough
ripping solos. Also "beware" the other reviews,
many of them come from Utah which is where
the author is from ( a little fishy? )!

Summary: OK, for this style of music
Review: The book is ok for fusion.
It could stand to have some more
intense solos as was stated before.

Summary: A great tool for modal mastery!!
Review: The novice and expert alike can greatly benifit from this book. As a reference for intense modal theory, the scales and modes presented in this book are easy to understand and yet contain a wealth of information. Scott Miller explores many aspects of modal jazz theory from intervals, to triads, every major/melodic minor/harmonic minor mode, and more. The companion CD is a must as it provides those students without a drum machine or bandmates to improvise and experiment with the concepts presented in the book. "Getting Into Jazz Fusion Guitar" has been an invaluble tool in my study and the theory presented transcends genres. Scott Miller's mastery (and love) of the guitar is evident in its pages.

Summary: Extreamly Educational
Review: This book has been extreamly educational for me. The information goes beyond the basics and also helps you uderstand the theory behind what it is teaching you. I would strongly recomend it for anyone who is trying to get deeper into the guitar.

Summary: Truly Exceptional
Review: This book has taught me more about music fundamentals than any other book I have read. No gimmics about how to learn terrible songs or riffs like in other guitar books. A must for guitarists wanting to master their instruments. Personally, I enjoy the in-depth voicing and triad discussions as well as Melodic and Harmonic Minor sections, which to me, have been some of the hardest theory to find easy and reliable reading on. Disreguard the negative comments made about this book in previous reviews-everyone likes to take punches at someone who's bound to make a name for himself in the music industry. Thanks Scott for making difficult theory understandable and ready to practice!!

Summary: Awesome book!
Review: This book is awesome! I love it! I'm just a guitar newbie, but this book has given me a place to start my journey through the confuseing world of music theory and guitar studies. The CD is just as awesome as the book, since I dont have my own band, it is a great oppertunity to practice my scales and modes. I think this book is great for all skill level guitarists, and I would highly recomend it!
