Rating: Summary: Great guitar technique tips from one of the masters Review: "Guitar Secrets" by Joe Satriani, is a great collection of exercises, tips and techniques from a series of articles he wrote for one of the guitar magazines a few years ago. Inside this little book you will find: helpful scale, chord and improvisation exercises, along with tips for improving dexterity, better understanding the fretboard, and getting the most out of your practice and playing time. For those who may not be familiar with Joe- he taught some of the great rock guitarists of our time including Steve Vai, and even the lead guitarist from Metallica. Joe's mastery of the instrument, and innovative techniques are incredible! Get this book and work the exercises into your practice routine. You'll be glad that you did! Also, be sure to pick up some of Joe's CDs and DVDs. To see the master in action, and get a great behind the scenes tour of Joe's stage set-up, effects pedals, and guitars check out "Live in San Francisco" available on DVD and CD. My personal favs from his CDs are "Crystal Planet" and one of his early CDs- "Surfing With the Alien". Listen to "Satch Boogie" or "Surfing with the Alien"- it will rock your socks off!!

Rating: Summary: A mind opener Review: After playing for 16 years profesionally and non, I have found that This book is very beneficial for not only techniques but for opening your mind for new idea's. I recommend this book for not only begginers, but for intermediates and advanceed players. There are not many books out there (not any that I know of)that teach good sound theory mixed with finger exercises, with 2 to 3 octave scale work outs and then has you to apply them immediately. Believe me, just like everybody else I have bought books, and video's that teach the principles that this one book teaches. But remember experience is the best teacher....so get out there and play and utilize everything you learn from not only this book, but every book and video you can get a hold of.
Rating: Summary: Despite several misprints, book is great! Review: First off, I'm a big fan of Satriani's music. Whenever I need some inspiration to practice the guitar, listening to Satch gives me the kick in the butt that I need. If you are looking to break up old and/or useless practice techniques with some eye opening and technique expanding excercises, this book may be for you. The book for the most part assumes that the reader is familiar with the theory behind modes. Although there is plenty to learn from this book if you are unfamiliar with the theory and application of modes, you will surely take more from the book if you seek out such knowledge elsewhere. THERE ARE SOME MISPRINTS IN THIS BOOK!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!! Specifically, several of the scale fingering diagrams on page 28 and 29(Dorian#4, Hungarian, and Symetrical scale patterns)are NOT correct. So, it may be helpful to have a scale diagram book handy to make corrections. Still, I find this book a great source of material to expand my excercise regemen.
Rating: Summary: Use it wisely Review: Great stuff, as long as you take each lesson to heart and practice everything!
Rating: Summary: Good book, but not what I expected. Review: I bought this book since I'm a great fanatic of Joe Satriani. I thought it was going to be more interesting and have more stuff. When I bought it, I was still a beginner, so most of the things I did not understand. Up to today, been playing guitar for 3 years and I still feel lazy to pick up this book. It's somewhat boring because the exercises are HARD. To achieve what you're looking for from this book, you have to dedicate SLOW time to practicing with it. It's not just open & play, it's a little more complicated. I wish I gave it a chance and tried it again, but so far I'm not interested...as I am still not so advanced in theory to take good advantage of this book. Buy it only if you're serious about learning theory & a little of complicated stuff. It has a ton of good information, but not yet useful to me.

Rating: Summary: not too good Review: I didnt really care for this book. I am a big fan of Joe's but this book didnt help me or appeal to me. Its first of all, too short, and it is more for advanced guitarists.
Rating: Summary: A definite must for any Satch fan Review: I found this book so useful, from the background on Satriani's life as an up and coming guitarist, providing infinite inspiration...It gives exercises and much needed information, from three-note-per-string scales up to very rarely found information on natural harmonics. This book is a must have for any guitarist.
