Summary: what else can be said?
Review: A good book for beginners, complete with a CD you can jam along to. Not much else I can say except you could find a lot worse.

Summary: Slap & Pop
Review: As a oldie but goodie bass guitar player, I found Dale Titus' book very good and it helped me out a lot. I learned some new riffs and I am learning how to slap/pop...he explains just how easy it is to do and the CD is great. All the songs on the CD are good and easy to play. Thanks Dale for putting back the spunk in my bass playing.

Summary: No No No!!
Review: Do not get the Bass Basics if you wanna learn bass by yourself! I have nothing to compare Bass Basics too, but the thing reads like Stereo Instructions. The booklet starts off with a history of the bass with all the notes which you have to memorize. After the page with the notes on it, there is about 50 pages of music which you can play. It gives a nice look at the slap method, which is nice.

Pros: A nice look at the slap method, nice cover picture, nice diagram of the bass inside.

Cons: Gives you no where to start. It doesn't teach you about anything. Some of you might say well what do you wanna learn from a book? I think at least an instructional booklet should give you techniques to make it easier on your hands, especially for beginners.

Maybe I was expecting too much, after all, I am trying to learn bass by myself. Bass Basics though, doesn't tell you anything important you need to know. For example, here's what it says on Amplifiers.

"When you are starting out with bass, look for a reliable amplifier."

What am I going to look for? An unreliable piece of junk? Thanks for stating the obvious Bass Basics.

It then goes on to explain how vital it is to know all the notes on the bass, it shows a diagram with every single note on it.

Bass Basics is a bad place to start for beginners. It is at least for intermediate bass players. I recommend this if you have somewhat an idea of the bass, if you are just starting out though, look somewhere else. I think it would take me longer to jam and learn bass by myself than read and apply this piece of garbage.

Summary: Raise the Roof
Review: I have been playing guitar for 10 years and know what it takes to become a serious guitar player. I bought this book for a church youth group kid who is a true beginner at playing any instrument. It is the best bass guitar book ever written for beginners. I have tried to find a bass guitar tutorial over the internet that is free, but this book was worth paying the $8.95. This book comes with a cd that provides a thorough tutorial. The voice on the cd and the play-along segments made me feel like I was getting a private bass lesson from a professional. If you're debating whether or not to get this book, I would say that if you're a beginner and want to learn the basics of bass guitar as well as the slap/pop technique, I strongly recommend this book. Don't forget to check "yes" if you thought that my recommendation was helpful!

Summary: Adequate...
Review: I've been playing guitar for 25 years now and have only recently started fooling around on the bass. It took me all of one day to get through 2/3 of the book. However, the author does offer some useful explanations of proper technique and the exercises are good practice. Also having the CD included is a nice touch.

Still I think anybody other than a complete novice with no experience at all will quickly outgrow this book.

Summary: For the true beginner...
Review: If the electric bass is your first instrument this is the book for you. It teaches you technique, scales and common bass lines for ballads, country, latin and blues. It gets you started with music theory without boring you through pages of uninteresting riffs. The four step approach really got me started where you learn three different riffs (each containing a mini music theory lesson) and then put it all together. The book comes with a CD which is at times silly but of utmost importance when just starting out. I bought three books and this was my favorite.

Summary: A comprehensive resource for the beginning bassist.
Review: Thank you for considering my book! I worked hard to put together a lesson plan that every beginning bassist can follow and benefit from. If you have any questions with the material in the book, please feel free to email me. I would love to talk with you!

God bless,

Dale Titus

Summary: Need more explanations
Review: This book probably was written for absolute beginners. The book is only 40 pages long and spends 15 of its pages on background information on how to read notes, tabs, and on how to hold and pick a bass guitar. If you're a guitar player, you probably know most of this already. The rest of the book is a play along to the CD with no explanation why a particular note was chosen to start and to end on. So you can't really create your own bass line for different songs even after you complete the lessons. It's a short book so you can go through the material in few days. If you had no exposure to music in the past, this book will start you off and help you become familier with the instrument. If you are looking to learn more, perhaps books on bass by Berklee school of music is a better deal.
