Rating: Summary: Uneven. Sometimes hysterical other times it drags. Review: Some very funny stuff in this book. At times I had tears streaming down my face. Other times, it dragged on. Best way to read the book? Pick and choose your chapters.
Rating: Summary: Not for the timid. Review: In reviewing a book there is a tendency to review the author, not the book. This difference is magnified with this book as Carlin's humor at times seems in bad taste, ugly and negative, which could be criticized. Sometimes his thoughts are cutting and to the point - valid observations of the human state that make me laugh. But, that's my perception. The negative stuff is not funny to me, however it may seem funny to someone with a different outlook on life. Thus, this is not a criticism, but a review of his material to let readers know what to expect while browsing through the mind of George Carlin as set down on the pages of "brain droppings."Although not stated in the book, it is simply a collection of Carlin's stand-up comedy material as developed throughout his career. He uses slang and curse words to emphasize his points, and, sometimes, concepts meant to shock. This scenario would then appeal to those who portend to be outgoing, avant-garde, or "macho" in their mind set, for whatever reason. Due to this nature, I found it helpful to appreciate the humor of the more outlandish material if I could imagine his voice and manner of speaking as the words streamed from the page into my consciousness. As its format is that of a reference book, that is, a collection of non related thoughts, there is no particular theme or objective other than to observe the thoughts of Mr. Carlin who has the ability to make you laugh at yourself and some of the silliness in the world. Obvious is its objective to generate income as a collection of his routines. This it does with impunity. His material reveals him to be highly thoughtful, creative and sometimes silly, and it makes wonderful potty reading. Thanks George, it nicely illustrates that you are a grade "A" comic.
Rating: Summary: Laugh out loud, side splitting funny. Review: CARLIN RULES!! So much to laugh about, think about. Just when I think, Man, he's nuts, he starts making sense. I've always enjoyed his comedy and now his cynicism, this is great comedy. I was in the elevator with my book and a grey hair told me her husband got her the book for Christmas and she just thinks he's great. George is timeless, a man for all ages. I always watch his TV comedy specials, but having his thoughts, jokes and etc mobile thats how I like him. I can get a Carlin fix at my leisure day or night. Thanks for the written word.
Rating: Summary: Carlin's book devilishly displays one of our premier wits. Review: Over a 3 day time frame, this book absolutely kept me in stitches; six days later, I would still break up at the quiet, personal humor that Carlin just bumps into during the normal course of a days travel and observation. George Carlin is a jewel.
Rating: Summary: Great collection of random and maybe dangerous thoughts. Review: This funny collection of random thoughts can be picked up and put down repeatedly making it a great book to put in your "out house" library. There is some wisdom tween the laughs and let's face it most of us think better on the "hopper" any how.
Rating: Summary: THE LAUGHING CYNIC Review: When I first started listening to George Carlin a few years ago, I reacted with mixed feelings. I laughed until weeping at his hilarious observations, but often cringed when he'd say something like 'I want to see people in the streets killing policmen.' His manic nihilism often scared the cheese out of me. However, as I patronized his comedy more and more, I learned to just relax and go with his maniacal flow. That is the way to read BRAIN DROPPINGS; with an open mind and a desire for belly laughs. I may be speaking from a less-than-impartial point of view here since my own worldview is a few shades darker than the Roman catacombs, but I still think that Carlin's brand of hilarity is humor at it's most visceral, boundless and prickly best.
Rating: Summary: This book ROCKS! Review: George Carlin rocks! He's been THE Funniest man ever! I strongly recomend this book for any one that needs a few days of laughing!
Rating: Summary: Carlin is Da man Review: George Carlin has been entertaining us for years with concerts, albums, and plenty of HBO specials. And finally, he got his ideas on paper. George Carlin's "Brain Droppings" has to be the funniest and most entertaining book I've read in a long time. In it, Carlin bashes the english language and our over-used expressions. He also talks about his basic problems with human nature and it is just laugh out funny. He does use a lot of foul language in the book and some of his ideas may offend certain readers. But not this reader. I can't wait until George Carlin writes a sequel to this book.
Rating: Summary: Good to hear, poor to read. Sorry George. Review: I was sorry to see how poorly Carlin converted to text. The old material is not so bad, but much of the new material seems rather repetitive and redundant. His proposed solutions to numerous problems are all the same violence that ceased to be shocking years ago. There are few worthwhile sections, the best of which might be the criticism of misused phrases and terms.
Rating: Summary: A must-have book for comedy lovers!!! Review: George Carlin is the master of comedy. He tells the world like it is, and makes it hilarious to read about! I hightly recommend this book, even to people who have never heard his work.
