Summary: It's Good To Be Jimmy
Review: As an longtime Buffett fan (dating back to the mid-1970s), I test drive everything Jimmy puts out, sometimes with great pleasure and sometimes with a little disappointment. A Pirate Looks At Fifty is an enjoyable read, especially while at the beach (or simply wishing you were). Buffett has lived 50+ years that most of us can envy, with a smile, and this book lets the reader vicariously participate. It's a bit heavy on seaplane and fly fishing technicalities, but full of great writing. Let's just hope Jimmy follows through on his hint that a forthcoming book will chronicle his early years in New Orleans.

Summary: Eye-opener for a Yuppie looking at 30.
Review: Buffett's book is not perfect or very "literary", but it sure was fun. It is perfect reading for the beach. More important, it is very revealing and thought-provoking for yuppies turning 30. Throw away your briefcases and live!

Summary: A little self-indulgent for my tastes
Review: Anyone alive would be envious of the life that Jimmy Buffett has earned for himself. Always one of the hardest working men in showbusiness, Buffett has reached out and flicked the good-times switch in several generations of hippies, frat boys, stock brokers and parents. I was a card-carrying worshipper up through the Coconut Telegraph days, but the lifestyle of a hedonistic troubadour -- one without record royalties or private Lear jets --- eventually caught up with me. Not that I begrudge Buffett his spoils -- but I find A Pirate Looks at 50 to be a self-engrossed work that carries little message except that "I got rich and I don't have to kiss ass like you do to make a living." Buffett has always tended to take potshots at three-day vacations, cruise ships and the work-a-day tourist without seeming to realize that they who suffer and struggle in the real world haven't necessarily sold out, they've just made choices. And in some cases, as painful as it was, grown up.

Summary: Loved the book - wish I was there.
Review: I picked up this book because it looked like an exciting travel adventure story - I was right. I was never a big Buffet fan (Margaritaville is the only Buffet song I knew) but after reading this book I have become a Parrot Head in training. Jimmy seems like a well rounded, well read man who enjoys his life - what a pleasure to see.

I didn't read this book too fast because I wanted to savor all of the experiences and adventures. I enjoyed the details - this made it more personal. I also loved his little bits of philosophy about life and kids and learning the background of some of his songs make me want to listen to them all.

More, please.

Summary: The drum has quit kicking
Review: Track down all scares about damp spider infested corners of the world with the cool ol' island boy but wipe your tracks. Ah stow the bear gun in the old streamboot just don't chew up the scenery. The good master jedi warrior should be folding the map and stay on land and stretch his imagination with a pina colada. The glory days strewn in or sewn from his diaries are like the stickers anyway. The niche is a skein of fruit wine to his people.

Summary: The Best Book Ever Written
Review: Jimmy Buffett has summed it all up in this book. His best writting yet. A "Pirate Looks At Fifty" is not only humorous but it is full of adventure and intresting stories about the past and present of his life. I find this Book to be better than any of his songs. It is basically a song itself. The whole book makes you wish that you were there with him through most of his life. There is nothing bad that I can say about this book. It is fun and intresting from beggining to end. I recommend this to anyone. It is the perfect book for anytime.

Summary: A book that makes you remember your own life
Review: I have been a big Jimmy Buffett fan all my life and loved his first book. Joe Merchant lost my interest but this new book makes you drift off and wonder what the world has in store for you. He eloquently details his families trip and let's you go along for the ride. I was especially touched by his description of his father. This was a great book for me, a busy dad trying to keep his sanity while rearing his children.

Summary: self-indulgement 101
Review: I couldn't finish this one. Margaritaville was entertaining. This bored me to tears. Too much banal detail that lead me to believe that JB thinks his life is more interesting than it translates on the page.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Where did he find the time???
Review: ... to do all this? If this all true, then I'm jealous of his life, and ashamed of mine! Between the office, home, little-league, homework, etc my life isn't as interesting as the copyright notice in this book.
