Rating: Summary: Interesting and funny -- bad attitude Review: I know that his fans will love him for ever... I know that he created a culture where there was none... However, as interesting as his life seems to be, he does not need to rub our noses in how much better he is than we are....Book is readable, entertaining, good for the summer. His attitude... my friend, take another vacation but this time make an attitude adjustment.
Rating: Summary: Big, big disappointment Review: As an avid reader, this book took me the longest to read in quite some time. I couldn't believe I have been reading this since July and I have finally finished. What a bore! The first few chapters on his planes and turning 50 were Buffett all the way, but once his journey started, it bored the hell out of me. My wife read this first and she is a huge Parrothead and she even struggled to get through this inflated tome of ego and geography. This book should have been subtitled: "A trip with a middle-aged ex-hippie man with his toys." Sorry, but this is not the classic all those Parrotheads are claiming it to be.
Rating: Summary: Buffet once again amazes Review: Jimmy Buffet is a wonderful writer and musicia
Rating: Summary: Marvin Gardens must be rolling over in his grave. Review: I did not realize how rich Jimmy was until he told me. I didn't realize how famous he was until he told me. I didn't realize that he has traveled the world until he told me. Jimmy...get over it. I understand that people change in their lifetime, and musical tastes evolve, but what Jimmy has evolved into is an embarrassment. What he once did for the love of his art is now done because he knows faithful fans will buy whatever he puts out. Your time has come and gone. It's a shame that you sold out.
Rating: Summary: Uhhh...OK. Review: I have to agree with the previous reviewer. What an ego ride he was on. Parrotking or not, you don't talk down to the people you are trying to reach out to, to sell your products. Actually, the only reason I'm writing this is because I noticed a few editorial mistakesm (making me think the book was rushed as well) and Buffett seems to contradict stories and liner notes from his albums and other writings. It was an OK read but I guess TRUE Parrotheads will not find any fault in ther self-worshipping idol (reason fans are named after FANATICS). Form your own opinion, not just because you like the guys music.
Rating: Summary: What the...?!? Review: As a Parrothead, regular Buffett listener, reader and concert going, I was thrilled to sit and read this book. Then I began. Granted it is an amusing book and I was hooked by the first few pages. Then it started to happen. The far-superior, condescending attitude of someone who was able to embark on all his dreams while putting the rest of us down for the choices we made and stuck to, started to irritate me after a while. One minute this guy is in Costa Rica then the next few chapters deal with the Alabama surf scene, college, music, marriage and Austrailia before actually completing the thought he started at his breakfast flashback. Sure, the stories are amusing and all, but some of it seems rushed and boring. It was torture trying to finish the last few rambling pages of nothing but recaps of mostly what he already recapped in the previous pages. I asked several other Parrotheads who have read this and his other works (thinking, maybe it is me) but the reactions from them were the same if not decidely mixed. Take it or leave it, but wait for a decent biography to appear. As a vacation book it is fine, but otherwise, being that I am of such meager talents and funds, oh well, I guess.
Rating: Summary: Good To The Last Drop! Review: Well, I didnt really finish this book because I hate to read but the 100 pages I did read were VERY good! So much happened in just that time that my report on the first 100 pages got an A on my project of the book! So I would reccomend this book to anyone who likes to read or if you just have a project due!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: an unreadable ego trip Review: A treatise on how to be boring, patronizing, and egotistical. Don't waste your money.
Rating: Summary: WHAT AN AMAZING LIFE Review: I read this book because I figured that of all people, Jimmy Buffett would have a very intersting life. I had no clue how he really lived. The book was great and I'll read it over and over.
Rating: Summary: A good chance to tan your soul!! Review: I am not a major Jimmy Buffett, the musician, fan by any means...sure I like to listen to his music and live his words and rythyms for awhile, but my main passion is reading. I read his first book Tales From Margaritaville and I can say that I liked it. But in comparison, A Pirate Looks At Fifty is much better. I would read it late into the night and be able to transport myself into the cockpit, co-piloting the famed Hemisphere Dancer (his Albatross) away to an island vacation filled with the opportunities of fishing, surfing, and soaking up the sun of the Carribean and South America. I would recommend this book to anyone, fifty or not ( I myself am twenty-eight) who wishes to see through the eyes of an entertainer who can fly, fish, and bring a carefree smile to just about anyones face and for a short while, live his adventures.
