Summary: Buffett's new book is like a visit from an old friend
Review: As a long-time Parrothead‹from way before that named was coined‹I've wanted to sit down over a cold one and chat a while with Jimmy Buffett, talk about his influences, his life, how he got to Florida, the inspiration for some of my favorite songs and more. After reading "A Pirate Looks at Fifty" I feel I've done just that. "A Pirate Looks at Fifty" is not your typical autobiography. Ever the storyteller Buffett doesn't get bogged down in trivia or feel compelled to stick to a straight chronological account. He's an entertainer and that's what he does. This is one of those books you'll want to use the Godiva chocolate approach to, savoring the experience instead of gobbling it down. How much did I enjoy it? I havem't read the Epiloque just so I can enjoy the idea that I still have some un-read BHuffett on nthe shelf awaiting the right time.

Summary: Perfect read for the Summer
Review: Jimmy has done it again -- taking all on a journey through the Caribbean and South America. Half of the book deals with a fascinating journey to the Amazon and the other half contains some anecedotes of how he got to where he is today. The story of how he originally got to Key West [with Jerry Jeff Walker as a tour guide] is pure Parrothead enjoyment.

Phins up....

Summary: Still Waiting For Buffett Biography
Review: If you were hoping to read a Jimmy Buffett biography, you will still be waiting after you complete "A Pirate Looks At Fifty". This book is not for the sun-bleached parrothead hoping to read about Buffett's sailing days. In "A Pirate Looks At Fifty", he babbles on endlessly about flying and fly-fishing. Maybe he was hoping to gain a new following of pilotheads.

Summary: " ... it's been a lovely cruise..."
Review: Set yerself down on a barstool next to some garrulous old drunk who's had a fewww too many. He tells ya about his love life, his kids, his house, how he got there from here, his boats and his private jet, his old Grumman seaplane, his favorite islands and he goes on and on and on...

Like any old salt, his sea-stories weave all over the road from past to present and back again across the double-yellow line of clarity.

Pour him another rum punch and he'll launch a three-sheets-in-the-wind schooner of philosophic descriptions and course headings.

But it's awfully fun sailing.

Summary: Buffett strikes the chord!!
Review: A line in this book echoes a line that I have heard Jimmy Buffet utter in concert; "I want you to know that I'm spending your money foolishly". It is, as always, the simple wish to be taken along for the ride that makes this book worthwile. If you have never lived with adventure, or your heart has never rung with the dischordant sound of not fitting in to the life that was planned for you, you will not like this book any more than you care for Jimmy Buffett's music. If, however, you find a kindred spirit in the music, you will LOVE this book. Anyone who has been through the "Phases of life", or who has ever had that cliched 'mid-life crises' will understand. Life is about the living of it. Great literature? No. Great book for the Middle Ages? Yes. Have I already sent copies to friends? YES!!

Summary: J.B. sums up over 30 years of his music in 458 pages
Review: J.B. is just "livin' his life like [his] song[s]." This book is a MUST read for all parrotheads! You feel like your sitting is the co-pilot seat right along side him.

Summary: Something for Parrotheads and more
Review: The only fault that I can find with this book is that it is somewhat repetitive regarding Bubba's love of flying, particularly in the beginning (and it merely teases with an F-14 story). But I expected too much because initially I thought it was a biography, and being from Mississippi and living in New Orleans, I've always enjoyed most the songs and stories that deal with Jimmy' adventures there. So if you're expecting a biography, it's not, it's much more. If you love JB's music, the tropics, flying, or fishing, then you'll probably like it. And besides the content, the writing style is great, very descriptive and evoking the feeling that your on the islands, boat, etc. By the end I was hooked, feeling the urge to put on "One Particular Harbour" and head out for some fishing.

Summary: A Trip Worth Taking
Review: The book reads like a rambling conversation, unrefined, as the author admits, and I liked it quite a bit. A trip around the Caribbean and Latin America to celebrate his 50th birthday is used by Buffett as an excuse to tell all sorts of stories reflecting on lessons learned during 50 years of "trying to live an interesting life." Actually, I found the personal stories much more enjoyable than the actual journal of the recent trip -- they are really the heart of the book -- but, all in all, it's a trip worth taking. It's so rare to find a rich guy who actually seems to know how to live.

Summary: Great Stories From A Great Storyteller
Review: Jimmmy Buffett tells great stories through his songs and his other books. This is a definite addition to any Parrot Heads library. Even non Parrot Heads will enjoy this trip through the Caribbean, and stories from early in his career.

Summary: Jimmy Buffett shares his 50 year "fun ride" with readers.
Review: If you like Jimmy Buffett, or if you are a Baby- Boomer, you will have fun sharing Jimmy Buffet's fifty-year ride through life.

Jimmy writes a loose, journal style story of the events, people, and places that have shaped his life and his career. Most readers who relate to Buffet's easy-going music will enjoy the peek into this seemingly "good-guy's" personal life.

As other pirate-readers turn fifty, they will find common ground in many of the details of Buffet's experiences (even if they never become calypso poets).

As a female reader, I did feel Jimmy spent a bit too much time on the details of his fishing experiences. But mostly, I loved it, and felt that I'd "been there, done that, got the same t-shirt."
