Rating: Summary: Read between the lines!!! Review: For those that didn't enjoy the book, I simply have one comment for you. Read between the lines and you will find the heart and soul of pilots, fishermen, wanderers and parents everywhere. As a pilot and SCUBA diver, I was most touched by the way Mr. Buffett handled and balanced the responsibilities of parenthood and family life with his toys and his wanderlust. My new family has put a serious dent in flying and diving, but I'm only 32. Mr. Buffett has given me new hope that it's never too late to have a happy childhood. At $15.00, it's the cheapest therapy I've found. Thanks, Jimmy.
Rating: Summary: Pass the Rum and Report the Outer Marker... Review: This is one great read! Twenty-some years ago when I was a young Navy flyer in Key West, I saw Jimmy perform at a little place called Howie's and I became an instant fan. Like his songs, the vignettes in his book tell captivating stories and give us a little insight into Jimmy's thoughts and feelings. Thoughts and feelings that are not unlike our own. Perhaps that is why reading this memoir seemed like having a conversation with a friend...a friend who likes the same things I do, airplanes, boats, travel, music and fishing. Mr. Buffett is obviously a very talented and intelligent man who is living life pretty much on his own terms. What more could anyone ask? I only wish he would include the great Northwest in his travels and yearly music tours.
Rating: Summary: Makes me want to change my latitude... Review: I really enjoyed the narrative provided by Jimmy of his travels, but was disappointed at times by the rapid-fire gear-switching between present and past occurrences. I think it could have been handled differently for smoother transitions. However, his descriptions of the locations and people he met while circling the Carribbean certainly made me want to pack my bags and go! My last comment deals with inaccuracies in the book. Although Manaus, Brazil is clearly south of the equator - and Jimmy makes a point of the crossing - the "flight logs" introducing some chapters shows his latitude to be approximately 3 degrees N, not S. A small faux paux only; and fairly easily overlooked. Overall, I would classify it as good escapist reading. I'll have to read it again come winter!
Rating: Summary: Same Old Same Old Review: Once again, I feel like I have been snookered. For nearly 20 years, I have been "daydreamin" with Jimmy as he takes me from port to port with nothing more than a pair of flip flops, suntan lotion and cold beer. Lately, however, additional baggage has found its way on board. Citation jets, seaplanes, customs greeters and the like are now standard issue if one wants to be a part of the fun. Working stiffs like me who make up the parrothead flotilla can no longer relate to the stories that Jimmy weaves. He fails to realize that simplicity was the one distinguishable feature that set him apart from the others. Let me off this sinking boat, I am getting seasick.
Rating: Summary: Rambling account of "what I did for summer vacation" Review: This one was just interesting enough to keep me from giving up. Just when I'd be convinced that he'd run out of anything interesting to say, another good story would pop out. It was entertaining but not nearly as much as I had expected.
Rating: Summary: Jimmy can do better than this! Review: I am very disappointed in this offering from Jimmy Buffet. It is obvious that he had a contract to honor and just cranked this book out. Margaritaille was funny and adventurous. This is just a diary and not a very interesting one. I am one "parrot head" that won't be buying any more of his books. I doubt I will finish this one.
Rating: Summary: A 5-Star Look at a Pirate Looking at Fifty Review: This book was a Father's Day gift from my wife and son, and what a great present it was, along with a couple Jimmy Buffett CDs for my collection! As a long-time Parrothead in his fifties who has been listening to Jimmy's music since the seventies, it was a real joy. This is a book that will give you "Caribbean-soul-envy" just reading it. Jimmy has given us an insight into his life in the lose form of a journal, and as such it turns out better than the autobiography one might expect. This is an essential necessity for any Parrothead's library. For "non-Parrotheads" it will be an enjoyable trip through the Caribbean and other parts of the Western hemisphere, with many interesting tales. Thank you, Jimmy Buffett, for another good book.
Rating: Summary: Boring/repetative Review: Who cares how many planes, houses and hunting lodges he has or the fact that he makes pancakes for the kids. Its a pretty much rub your face in it. I'm rich your not
Rating: Summary: Disappointenly non-entertaining Review: This new work is surprisingly short on substance or entertainment. Buffett's previous works have been great at balancing a fun story with some deeper meaning. This book can be summed up in a few sentences. Got allot of money, love to fly, love to fish, go ahead and live vicariously through me. This is not what Buffett's music has been about, although if you listen to Banana Wind, you knew a book like this was coming. Spend you money on his other books, well worth it, and skip this one.
Rating: Summary: I needed a few more boat drinks to read that much about fish Review: I enjoyed the book, but I wasn't drunk enough to enjoy all that fishing. I know why his wife brings a friend to run with. I love his escapist attitude and he is very close to my age, so I relate to his take on life and experiences/music of the 60's. I didn't do the drugs(possibly my loss?!). And I lived in the tropics in my formative early adulthood so I hanker for the sun and the surf, plus the slower pace. I went back to Borneo/Malaya for my 25th wedding anniversary and found (just like Jimmy) you really can't go home again. They have all found cars, computers, cell phones, and satelite dishes. I was in a inexpensive guest house in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on the island of Borneo. We were watching a Blazers game with the help in the "entertainment room". They knew more about the stats on the Blazers than I did and I live near Portland, Oregon and go to some of the games. I guess I will just dream of Margaritaville.
